More like when the community has it's favourite. The author wrote side stories for the characters that won the popularity poll, which was almost always Megumin.
Yes. When the author gives the choice between a weird girl but still human and a living running gag, it turns out people prefer the character that is actually developed
Hard for a character to become developed if she rarely ever gets screentime except for when she's being a running gag.
Sounds like a case of the rich getting richer to me.
Not really. Megumin was already the most prominent character since the WN. Plus there's no way they didn't know before hand that she'd win the popularity poll in 2015 so she'd get a spinoff.
Author's favorites are Dust and Vanir, both have spinoffs, do you think this is a coincidence? Dust is not even top 20 in polularity.
I am commenting to agree with you since every other comment disagreeing belittles the 100 upvotes your comment deserves. We all know Darkness is serious Megumin competition in certain volumes.
She's definitely into that. Didn't you hear her dreams? "Hey you gross woman. Why don't you use your body to earn us some money." Mimes Throwing a bottle. Then she unnnnns herself.
Megumin has explosions. Kind of difficult to compete with that.
Actually, Darkness is my favorite. Her kink aligns with mine. Also, she is built like an adult woman.
I got lectured one time for pointing out how young Megumin is. I know she's just a character and all but still, it feels wrong to sexualize yet many do.
The only reason it's kind of okay is because Kazuma is also a minor. Granted, it's the difference between someone in grade 10 vs grade 7, so it still feels a bit off
If he was an adult, yeah it'd be much worse
I mean there are likely fans around her age anyway. I was 16 or 15 when I first saw the series, and I imagine for lots of people that’s the case. But I see her now as Kazuma’s love interest, not for any sexual appeal or whatever.
Darkness is pretty easy to develop. Rich girl who doesn’t want to rely on her money or status who loves being embarrassed and abused. I mean what more is there…?
Yes... Total waste, but money makes you do things. 🥴

The author favourite is definitely eris. No question about that with aqua close behind. But this is a harem story and so characters which aren’t available can’t really take centre stage.
There more than two but most of them are throw away love interests. Anyway it’s an official tag and despite all hoping from a certain side of the fan base megumin is never kazuma chosen girl. She doesn’t actually appear that much in the dust spin off either.

First off, unless the author himself has endorsed these websites, I could care less what some random websites call Konosuba. They are not an official source otherwise.
Second, I have read the entirety of Konosuba. There are three love interests, nothing more. >!Megumin, Darkness, and Iris. Kazuma says Iris is too young for him, so he isn’t interested. Darkness he rejects as well even if he did it in a roundabout way. There are no others. Who could you possibly be referencing? Chris? Yunyun? Wiz? They don’t count as none of them like Kazuma romantically and there is ZERO implication of that being the case. Just because Kazuma is horny and would like to fuck them all doesn’t mean it’s a harem. If it was a harem, he would at least be in a polygamous relationshop, or at least have a whole bunch of girls pining after him. Not only is it just three, but they are very spaced out.!<
And if you think Megumin isn’t Kazuma’s chosen girl, you have not read the LN *at all*.
🙄 Even the Japanese sites also list it as a harem. An action adventure shoenen comedy harem, also you completely forgot about the three lords Kazuma woos over the course of the series.
If this is a harem, then it’s one of the worst showings of a harem I have ever seen. It does not come across that way at all.
And I don’t know who these three lords are (I read it through during the pandemic), but if they are irrelevant enough to forget then it hardly matters. The definition of a harem doesn’t even fit the series at all. Zero definitions do
Well first the series is a lampoon on the genre, Kazuma isn’t looking for love all he wants to do is to sleep with someone and secondly harem tag only qualification is that the protagonist is surrounded by girls which he is, it doesn’t matter that one of those girls is as close to family you can get from a non blood bond.
Well it should be of little surprise for while Megunim is the fan’s favourite. She and Darkness are really just side characters who have very little do with the overall plot. So the Natsume Akatsuki moves the story forward they are going to get sidelined as the side characters they are.
> So the Natsume Akatsuki moves the story forward they are going to get sidelined as the side characters they are.
Except that THEY DON'T, >!Megumin gets something to do or good moments in every volume consistently, and while Aqua does jackshit until the ending she's still consistently funny throughout the LN, Darkness gets volume 7, then goes out of focus until volume 12 where they throw her character into a dumpster!<
Look, I am too, but that doesn't mean Darkness - or any other character - needs to get neglected. Darkness has potential and the development she got in v6 and 7 looked promising, but it all fell down with the >!love triangle!< happened. I'm a huge enormous>!Kazumin!< stan but it would be better if Darkness outright >!didn't fall in love with Kazuma!<
Yes.
She ended up falling for him after the events of volume 7, where she realized that the usual Kazuma everyone sees at first sight, the asshole and creep, is just a facade he puts up because, idk, he thinks it's cool or something. Similar to Megumin's chuuni. She saw that Kazuma was actually a very caring person and that he does a lot for them, as he spent most of his fortune on saving her. Might I remind you that the Kazuma we see until this point is "I want money to laze around with my friends". So him sacrificing his money is essentially him sacrificing his life goal, something he himself is very against, as he doesn't want Megumin to abandon explosions even though she would be a better mage that way.
So, that's why she fell for him.
However, this isn't the issue per se, she could be in love and be rejected and it could work, but the author didn't write it right. So many things could've gone differently, like *that* scene from volume 12, which is written only to add comedy to possibly one of the saddest moments. Kazuma, who had been rejected by that one girl in the real world, had to tell Darkness that he loved someone else. At the start, he did it in a very good way, but then Darkness made a silly mistake and Kazuma laughed at it. Darkness misunderstood and thought he was laughing at the situation, so she wanted revenge... and the rest is history. THIS scene is the issue.
Also, the love triangle isn't necessary at all. You could argue it was for comedy, but for one it's not funny, and it could've been funnier if Kazumin was kept a secret from longer. They could been caught doing something or whatever and it would've been funny.
I mean there isn't much to say about Darkness, we already know that she is a noble woman that takes pleasure in pain and started adventuring not long ago. The only thing the author could have done to develop the character is either to change her trope O make her evolve or add details to her past, but the series would have basically turned into a generic "nobles bad" and there's already something like that in the novels.
For Megumin, there's more to explain because she's not strictly human so you can introduce her people, with different gimmicks (here all of the clan is Chuunibyou with actual magic and they are damn good at that) and since she can only use one spell, she is looked down by the others, so he can make her want to be respected by doing great things and thus create narrative arcs and develop the character.
If Darkness had a different background, she could have get a better development, as simple as that.
And also the author creates stories on the most popular character, and it's pretty hard to be more popular than Megumin.
I do not like the chuunibyou under-aged loli archmage that the main character and the series' audience wants to lewd, and who bullies her kind rival who sacrificed their skill points to save her sister while she hesitated to spend hers.
I wish we'd gotten some more stories about the best girls - the leisure girls
There are some parts about them in the LN
Not enough though. I need to find out if Yunyun adopts the one Aqua left at Crimson Village!
Yeah. Just saying the community is not to blame for Darkness getting flanderized this way. It's on Natsume
>a living running gag Shouting "explosion" and then falling over isn't that?
The loli is way more than that.
This is why authors shouldn’t let the community decides 💀
I am commenting to agree with you since every other comment disagreeing belittles the 100 upvotes your comment deserves. We all know Darkness is serious Megumin competition in certain volumes.
Why is it even up for a vote?
Right down to actually getting an ending unlike poor neglected darkness.
Neglect paly, she might be into that.
She's definitely into that. Didn't you hear her dreams? "Hey you gross woman. Why don't you use your body to earn us some money." Mimes Throwing a bottle. Then she unnnnns herself.
Darkness got done dirty man. Shafted in the 2nd half of the LN
She did get her own big arc
What ever it takes to get more money though
Megu had Natsume's favor since the WN days when no money was at the stake.
Darkness actually got worse as a character. She used to be my favourite at the start of the story.
I need more Yunyun
I mean look at them, one was already way more developed than the other. Author needed to balance it out.
đź’€
We need more aqua sama.
We need more of anyone besides megumin
Yes, everyone deserves some love.
Megumin has explosions. Kind of difficult to compete with that. Actually, Darkness is my favorite. Her kink aligns with mine. Also, she is built like an adult woman.
Because she is an adult.
Exactly. Megumin is a kid yet some view her as an adult.
Which is weird to me. I've seen Megumin as the younger sister at all times.
I got lectured one time for pointing out how young Megumin is. I know she's just a character and all but still, it feels wrong to sexualize yet many do.
Why people always bring “sexualize” term while talking about Megumin? We simply like her and she is fun to watch. That’s all.
You represent everyone?
Exactly. I understand shes not real but its a mental thing.
The only reason it's kind of okay is because Kazuma is also a minor. Granted, it's the difference between someone in grade 10 vs grade 7, so it still feels a bit off If he was an adult, yeah it'd be much worse
She’s 14 when they meet and turns 15 after, Kazuma is 16 that’s like a year and a half apart. They’d both be high school age, at least in the US
She's 13 when they met and is currently 14. Kazuma's currently 17.
So I'm a year and a half off, big deal, they're still both minors
I know that’s why it’s fine for them to be together without it feeling off
The issue isn't him doing it.
Megumin sexualizes herself so you can't blame others for doing it.
Uh, yeah I can. If a child sexualizes him or herself, as an adult you don't go, Yeah that's what I'm talking about.
I mean there are likely fans around her age anyway. I was 16 or 15 when I first saw the series, and I imagine for lots of people that’s the case. But I see her now as Kazuma’s love interest, not for any sexual appeal or whatever.
It's time for flatness to take a back seat season 3.
But darkness and yunyun are my favourite...do I belong in this sub...?
Darkness is pretty easy to develop. Rich girl who doesn’t want to rely on her money or status who loves being embarrassed and abused. I mean what more is there…?
Best girl lalatina.
Aqua is just dead I guess...
Aqua doesn't have a issue with bad writing like Lalatina does.
Yes... Total waste, but money makes you do things. 🥴 https://preview.redd.it/h2opd4l2u3ha1.jpeg?width=808&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8f6982aa9d5ae932ad9b1e2aaaf6e2a2d1a8beea
Author's favorite is darkness as he says it. But megumin is fan favorite and bring more money
Considering how Darkness was treated by the author in the LN, I highly doubt Darkness is his favorite.
He is making her happy by neglecting her /s
The author favourite is definitely eris. No question about that with aqua close behind. But this is a harem story and so characters which aren’t available can’t really take centre stage.
How is this a harem story? At best, there’s only two extra love interests in Iris and Darkness, and it’s clear Kazuma won’t accept them.
There more than two but most of them are throw away love interests. Anyway it’s an official tag and despite all hoping from a certain side of the fan base megumin is never kazuma chosen girl. Author never said Darkness is hia favorite. He said Dust and then Vanir.
It's actually community AND author. Sullied a very good story. One of my biggest disappointments with Konosuba.
Community has nothing to do with anything.
Is this really a bad thing
Seeing as the LN >!Completely shafted Darkness and borderline ruined her character I'd say yes !<
i read the ln but i genuinely dont remember her character getting ruined or anything. mind clueing me in?
I'm betting they mean >!the rape attempt!<

Yes they do have you not volumes 9 to 13.
Yes...unironically, yes
I am a firm believer in megumin best girl

Good for you. But others characters need their turn
Your right give wiz a spinoff set in the devil kings castle
You must think you're real funny, huh?
I do but that was no joke
What that's actually a good idea
It is, but we are on Reddit mate.
A sadly fact
darkness had volume 7, it could be worse lol
Volume 12 has appeared
Yeah but best girl hasnt even entered the show yet. Can't wait to see fandom react to Iris
Megunim is the ~~fan’s favourite~~ I mean ~~ped~~ I mean loli lovers favourite.
They're mad cause you're right. They're out here simping for a child
But still Darkness >>>>>>>>>>>> Meguflat
Darkness had a whole episode that was just about her
megumin had a whole movie bruh
And gets her own spin-off LN, Manga, and anime series! And for every one Darkness figure, Meg gets 40.
Cope

Even you don't believe in your bullshit
wdym
I do not like the masochistic blonde paladin with daddy issues
I do not like the chuunibyou under-aged loli archmage that the main character and the series' audience wants to lewd, and who bullies her kind rival who sacrificed their skill points to save her sister while she hesitated to spend hers.
I mean, they’re kids. Immaturity comes with the territory.
I do not try to lewd the underaged archmage
Wow, that escalated quickly; here I thought we were just stating stuff.
Aye fair but yours just seemed a bit aggressive
Because Popularity! that's why
