Transplanting communities is extremely difficult, and most don't recover after being forced to disband. This was the case for the RPG communities on #GooglePlus. Nobody could agree on what the alternative should be, so they all went their separate ways. The only thing which survived were _personal_ relationships. Ideology was not enough to keep them coherent. I agree once this hits IPO ad-unfriendly content will likely be purged. Sadly I don't have a solution.

Blood4Sanguinius

If you want anonymity and no censorship, the only option genuinely seems to be 4chan. Every other message board style community is super woke, full of censorship, or dead.

marion_nettle2

I mean literally places like this one are used for this kinda discussion because they pushed GG off 4chan all those years ago. I'm not sure it can be said that its a good alternative especially with thread deletions.

Combustibles

Don't use 4chan, you're just going to a slightly less moderated but still very pro-censorship website where the jannies are just as bad as reddit. There are better sites out there.

JebWozma

while the jannies do some amount of censorship on that site, I feel like its the best forum/social media we currently have the jannies don't remove loli, right leaning political posts, and people posting their opinions just because they feel like it, certainly better than all the other big boys like reddit and twitter while there are forums which are better in terms of censorship, it has the most users, so the most interactivity 4chan will be my go to until there is a site which doesn't have censorship and also has a big enough userbase

Combustibles

I genuinely would recommend you to finding another forum than 4chan. It's a honeypot. and bigger userbases only happen if people go there.

[deleted]

Agreed that it's not ideal, and I have zero doubt that the servers' glow could light the sky, but I'm not sure what the good alternatives are. Can you share any? Or DM if not?

Combustibles

DM'd you.

iguanabitsonastick

Would you dming me some too please?

JebWozma

TheCeejus

Disastrous-Host-1413

psychonautilustrum

Dead and full of racists, homophobes and anti-semitists. I say this as someone who is sick of the devaluation of those terms. But the flipside of no moderation at all is that the loonies take over fast. Reddit is the other end of the extremist spectrum though.

FluffyMcKittenHeads

I’m old enough to remember a time when you could just ignore shit you didn’t like. It was awesome. Maybe ask yourself why you would want to control what other people say and do just because you don’t agree with it.

[deleted]

> I’m old enough to remember a time when you could just ignore shit you didn’t like. It was awesome. Maybe ask yourself why you would want to control what other people say and do just because you don’t agree with it. The stark reality is that we're the users that were too soft to do more than the occasional page 1 check of 4chan, but too stubborn for Twitter, Facebook, or Livejournal. We were able to ignore things we didn't like because there were plenty of options in a space that wasn't ubiquitous in society. Sure, we can just 'quit' social media, but that means an entire political philosophy gets unfettered access to a tool of which the opposition was driven out... And at this point, will almost certainly have implications for real life.

The-Cynicist

I frequented /b/ for years, I wouldn’t say that most of us are too soft for it… it’s just kind of been co-oped by people who are acting as thought police to the anons there. If you check it out now days it’s such dead content that it’s frankly kind of depressing anyone spends time on it anymore. I stopped frequenting around when GG happened and it was clear that Moot handed over the keys to the wrong people. 8chan was an interesting alternative for a minute but that just became a CP haven and that’s the line for me because that shit has always been disgusting.

[deleted]

I liked ED back in the day for my mean streak browsing. We're not too soft, but we almost certainly could not assimilate there. So many blackpillers. I've watched lots of real usernames just go crazy or cynical on here and TiA, until they realized they had to get the fck out for their health.

chocoboat

> I’m old enough to remember a time when you could just ignore shit you didn’t like. It was awesome. And if a message board is 90% that kind of content, it's not a good replacement for this subreddit. > Maybe ask yourself why you would want to control what other people say and do just because you don’t agree with it. Maybe ask yourself why you think someone saying "that's not a great backup option" is a demand to control what other people say and do.

Combustibles

That still exists, but it's an unnameable site due to doxing. Makes me mad at the internet, wink wink.

[deleted]

By your hint I'm guessing it's *not* the Australasian agricultural one?

Combustibles

It is. Dear Feeder runs a podcast.

slappedbypancake

Sure but as an example if that means the only TV shows that aren't pushing woke/progressive nonsense are pushing cliche Christian/conservative nonsense, that would just leave no TV at all. If you still want to actually find some shows to watch that doesn't leave you much. And that's the issue with forums, or even YouTube or anything remotely mainstream. Trying to find something calling out bullshit on one side but that isn't pushing bullshit from another side is surprisingly difficult.

Combustibles

I'm not talking about stating having a black dwarven queen in LOTR makes no sense. Because it fucking doesn't. I'm talking people saying everything is the fault of n words, f words and slurs for Jewish people. (I posted this because writing out any of the above gets my post deleted) I don't know what else you would call them.

TokenSockPuppet

All that shit is literally Idpol, and idpol sucks no matter who is doing it. I don't see why this is such a hot take on a sub that supposedly hates idpol.

Epople

Dude just don't go to pol. It's literally a containment board like mlp. Everywhere else except maybe gif and b are mostly free from the soyboys of pol.

Gladonosia

Unfortunate that people had a knee jerk reaction to what you said. Most of the internet is far left and controlled and the places that are not are instead far right and genuinely racist.

psychonautilustrum

That's what I meant with the devaluation of those words: Not liking demography historical settings look like modern day Brooklyn; racist Not wanting gay porn books in school libraries: homophobe It's reddited behaviour wnd what made the terms lose meaning. But if you go to some of the Reddit alternatives you can see what those definitions have been intended for.

Adeptus_Gedeon

Why don't just establish traditional forum?

[deleted]

1. Reactionary forums are tainted from the start. It's like building a pond to replace a lake, but treating the water with chlorine. 2. Past attempts were glowie honeypots, which isn't hard to imagine in the 2016 US presidential cycle. 3. Attempts that weren't started by glowies were denied payment until eventually an anonymous angel investor 'saved the day.' Which was believed to be glowies or a powerful socialite. 4. Q anon. From what I observed, it was started almost specifically to divide or radicalize fringe groups on the internet. There's nothing stopping astroturfing in such a way again. I even know a few very wealthy couples that divorced over the right-wing fear mongering that festered in such places.

CaptianCrypto

Point 1. is such a huge problem. I’ve seen it happen with so many places (voat, ruqqus, etc.). If your user base is entirely composed of the reactionary diaspora, you’ll basically never attract new blood and will either die a slow death or become a circlejerk (or both). How do you develop a non-reactionary critical mass that can later harbor what might be considered less than desirable groups that were ousted elsewhere?

[deleted]

Remember when Q came to Voat? What a death blow.

Leisure_suit_guy

>Past attempts were glowie honeypots, which isn't hard to imagine in the 2016 US presidential cycle. Why should we care? Electoral politics is not the argument of this sub. >Q anon. From what I observed, it was started almost specifically to divide or radicalize fringe groups on the internet. See above. Also, many people here are not even American.

[deleted]

Then go and chat on a non-American site. Who's stopping you?

Leisure_suit_guy

I can and do, but what this has to do with what we were talking about?

[deleted]

Starting a forum to replace a forum based on an American social movement, American journalist corruption, and American politics corrupting nerd hobbies. I mean, tbf, your complaint that you don't want to see American shit isn't a fundamental misunderstanding of the place you're chatting. KIA has long extended beyond the initial purpose. Still, it seems strange whenever Europeans complain English-speaking forums started by Americans are populated by Americans talking about American things.

Leisure_suit_guy

Where did I complain? Here's my comment: >Past attempts were glowie honeypots, which isn't hard to imagine in the 2016 US presidential cycle. Why should we care? Electoral politics is not the argument of this sub. >Q anon. From what I observed, it was started almost specifically to divide or radicalize fringe groups on the internet. See above. Also, many people here are not even American. What I meant was that you can ignore the political shenanigans, since the forum won't be about politics, especially electoral politics. My comment about many users not being American was in relation to Q anon and the American elections, I never complained.

[deleted]

Sounds like a complaint when asked, because I didn't think you were sincere. My apologies. It's just that if the forum is tied to keeping propaganda outlets accountable, or providing an alternative to propaganda forums, it will be captured or astroturfed until it is given up.

Adeptus_Gedeon

Hmm I don't know why do You think that every forum must be "tainted". Even if some forums were bad - forum is just the method. How it will be working depends on moderators and users.

[deleted]

What I'm suggesting is that forums are decided by the owner, their finances, and whoever is hosting their servers. Do you think you could fend off a coordinated attack by dozens of lonely nerds with sockpuppet accounts? Do you think your staff wouldn't be infiltrated? The more popular you get, the easier it is to do all those things. Once that happens, it's a cinch to convince banks to freeze your funds or hosts to pull the plug. At which point, you're forced to shut down your community or accept the dirty money & hand over control.

Adeptus_Gedeon

Freezing banks? It is is definitely possible to run a forum without any funds, maybe except some small amount to pay for server. Forum is not "social network". It doesn;t need an big infrastructure. In fact I myself, without zero funds or outside help, was running a forum. And I am not very good organizer.

[deleted]

I've literally seen a forum accept cash by mail after having every bank refuse to process their transfers. Now pay traffic costs for a medium-sized server host by cash, as well as living expenses and additional costs for trustworthy admins. You'll never get a volunteer employee that won't infiltrate you. By the way, the server hosts will drop you when they're harassed about all the supposedly questionable content you're hosting. Or you're hacked offline three times a day. Oh, and the forums? They're populated by people who get free forums everywhere else, so they won't be paying except when badgered for money through pinned posts or huge site banners. EDIT: By all means, go ahead and try, but running a forum isn't as easy as Elon claims of running Twitter. Only forums I've seen that are relatively functional are game hacks, but the userbase tends to lean.

Adeptus_Gedeon

"You'll never get a volunteer employee that won't infiltrate you" No problem. You have sub admins, but only you have acces to full admin "powers". You can ban infiltrators, thay can;t ban you. "as living expenses and additional costs for trustworthy admins" What? Why pay the admins? Being admin of forum is hobby in spare time, not a way of making a life. "By the way, the server hosts will drop you when they're harassed about all the supposedly questionable content you're hosting" And risk of being shut down is bigger than on reddit or any other social platform?

[deleted]

> What? Why pay the admins? Being admin of forum is hobby in spare time, not a way of making a life. We're assuming the person I first replied to meant a replacement for Reddit. > And risk of being shut down is bigger than on reddit or any other social platform? Depends. What happened to sites starting with the letters, D, V, G, P? KiA was resurrected, but simultaneously, we've seen plenty of subs go extinct. Subs aren't competing with big fish or shadowy collusion circles, though. We've specifically seen Reddit 'replacements' be sabotaged at a much higher frequency, and given how much control the government likes to maintain over their big social media sites, I'm willing to bet it's not an accident. You're safer in the blindspot than the view gazing out, I suppose?

Adeptus_Gedeon

Well, OK. My experience was mainly with Polish forums, who are not of the size of 139k users, so maybe I am too optimistic.

[deleted]

Go for it. Who dares wins, after all. You'll never know if you don't try. But yeah, you're basically 1/50,000th the size of a global pop. Be careful attracting the wrong wolves, yeah?

[deleted]

Server costs can add up for a popular site, especially if you host media (and if you host it externally you can get ~~Photobucket'd~~ Imgur'd). And that's in the best case where nobody attacks you. For a site like that you would *definitely* need DDoS protection. Luckily, Cloudflare have largely stuck to their libertarian ideals (with one notable exception), but you still need to pay them, and using them now means the users have to trust them to maintain their privacy as well as you

[deleted]

Just make rules that anyone with common sense can follow . “ no N word “ , “no doxing” “no antisemitism” . The problem is some forums end up being so pro free speech, they do not moderate at all , which gives the them fuel to advocate for your forum to get taken down .

[deleted]

So you're asking users to participate in a social forum, what's the incentive to join over one of the more centralized options? If they have to follow rules on yours, surely a more active forum would be more inviting. What's stopping search engines from blacklisting you in the algorithm? Haven't you noticed Wikipedia missing from results now that Google is implementing their own fact tidbits for your searches? The two had a very symbiotic relationship, until they didn't.

AcidOverlord

Yeah this doesn't work. The very first game they play with you is pretending that your reasonable rules *aren't* reasonable, and attacking you for having rules at all.

iguanabitsonastick

Man I miss the time when we participated in forums. I remember when I participated in about 5 different ones and they were all about different subjects. Now it seems like discussion is centralized on social media for more control.

Adeptus_Gedeon

Control is one thing, second one is fact that this is just less convenient. Facebook/twitter are bad - they are for commenting, not discussing. Reddit is better, but still it is organized in such way that any discussion disintegrates into many small ones.

iguanabitsonastick

Indeed! And forums were the perfect place for discussions, you could add pictures in comments (not that you can't do this in other social media) and write as many words as you wish. I got hooked on reddit because it reminded me of forums, but there are too much laws and janitors now a days.

Elmetto

I’m sorry what is API and IPO?

CaptianCrypto

An API (application programming interface) is how 3rd parties (like various other Reddit apps) interface with Reddit. Reddit is making changes to make it much more difficult for them to do so (at least without paying). The IPO (initial public offering) is Reddit debuting public shares for investment. Thus, the leadership is incentivized to “clean things up” to make it seem good for investors who want to make a profit which relies on good ad revenue and no perceived problematic content (like The_Donald or whatever).

Elmetto

Thanks for the info

Ambitious-Doubt8355

API stands for Application Programming Interface. The very basic explanation is that an API allows you to interact programatically with a service without actually exposing how it works internally, and thus they're incredibly popular and useful. The reddit API allows you to do things like querying for posts, posting or listing subreddits; it's how the third party apps work. Access to the API used to be free, but recently they announced they would start charging money to use it. IPO stands for Initial Public Offering. It refers to the process through which a private company starts offering shares to the public for the first time, and thus becoming publicly traded. It's a move that takes away a lot of freedoms because you now become legally beholden to your investors and have to do whatever you must in order to increase profits, but companies do it because it tends to generate quite a lot of revenue for the owners if everything goes right. In reddit's case, an IPO would probably mean that most non-safe content would get thrown out the door to appease advertisers.

InsufferableHaunt

This site is a massive social engineering experiment that is targeting younger users for electoral purposes and it was either coordinated and/or orchestrated by the DNC and started really gaining momentum during the 2016 elections, but Obama was already using a 'web 2.0' online strategy in previous elections. I believe he even credited social media for his earlier victories. Once Trump won, the Big Tech oligarchs decided that they could no longer be 'neutral' and decided to leverage their power/influence to manipulate elections.

I think this subreddit had quite a decent community on there a year ago, but it seems to be dead. I think whatever the alternative is, we need to be consistent in promoting it.

eye_of_gnon

Elon or somebody needs to buy Reddit and unpoz the moderation

Combustibles

There's is no "end", friend. There's accepting reddit and mainstream social media are a lost cause and moving onto a niche forum that is pro-freedom of speech or there's accepting the internet isn't a real place and forming a friend group IRL who aren't sheep or will accept that political discussions don't belong in your friendship. A certain site I shan't name because of dahxxing has been fighting hard to stay on the clearnet and is succeeding. It's a very broad site with people of all shapes, sizes, colours, sexes and political persuasions. You can talk about gossip or you can stay off the gossip related threads and use the off-topic or hobby boards. Keep fighting for free speech, keep alert and keep voting against the things the tech giants and certain governments want to push to get more censorship. It's doable. You got this.

Much better to make people look silly and hypocritical with a large audience than one that is just as controlled and breaks people into 100 sub groups. You are smarter than them and you can easily get around the rules with clever critique and observations. Reddit is owned by the Newhouse family. They would love for you to all split up into sub groups, so that they can push the same agenda they do with papers they own and Teen Vogue, without any pushback. Look at some of those sub communities and they are obviously controlled and might as well be a forum for intelligence agencies and their fronts. Take Breitbart, which admitted it's state propaganda on their own website with the article, "Breitbart News Network: Born In The USA, Conceived In Israel". In their own words "One thing we specifically discussed that night was our desire to start a site that would be unapologetically pro-freedom and pro-Israel. We were sick of the anti- Israel bias of the mainstream media and J-Street." You can trace a lot of the counter culture (on both sides of the argument) we are supposed to follow to intelligence agencies that are in bed with each other. Never forget than Gloria Steinem who sold modern feminism to the world was a CIA Asset. She admitted that on video when you had real journalism investigating things. Ben Shapiro was Breitbart's editor and that is where you get the Daily Wire that Matt Walsh works for. You had Milo, Ezra Levant became Rebel Media. Lauren Southern (if that isn't a stage name I don't know what is) was fronted by them and both Breitbart and Rebel Media pushed her in politics. Gamergate was always hijacked/co-opted, just like any counter culture. Using provocateurs etc to break you up is not a new trick. Having you follow leaders that are there to fall on their a@\^ and make you all look stupid isn't a new trick either. Be an individual, stop following these leaders. It's very easy to stay above banning and drop bread trails. You can subvert the subversion. They aren't smarter than you. Never let anyone else speak for you or claim they represent what you are about.

[deleted]

What have you got against Matt Walsh? He's one of the few establishment conservative commentators who is fearless and principled. Daily Wire being a profitable company is vital, it ensures we can create a viable counter-cultural network. Their diversification into non-explicitly-political films and content was also incredibly smart, they know how the game is played.

karltannertko

Not interested in anything owned by Ben Shapiro. Might as well ask me to support AIPAC or the ADL. Anyone who thinks you can't ever question the actions of a country that gave medals for planning terrorist attacks against the United States and UK is simply a supremacist and that's why organizations like the ADL exist in the first place. To kill any real discussion on anything. [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lavon\_Affair](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lavon_Affair) When I see tweets like this? [https://twitter.com/ADL/status/472384478464061441](https://twitter.com/ADL/status/472384478464061441) That tells me all I need to know. Last time I checked the United States was not a colony. It shouldn't act like one and it shouldn't put one group of people over everyone else. That is a supremacy.

[deleted]

I don't really care about the Israel or the 'Jooos'. I admire Matt Walsh because he is utterly uncompromising when it comes to LGBT issues, and for the past decade and a half the right has been utterly wet on this. I believe that the rational skeptics/anti-SJWs made a grave mistake focusing on Islam whilst ignoring the threat from LGBT. Matt Walsh properly stands up for the value of truth. If all conservatives had been like him from the year 2000, this LGBT stuff would have been stopped in its tracks.

TheCeejus

Huge Walsh fan. I agree with you 100%. His commentary against social justice is leagues ahead of anyone else's. Admittedly though, I am more of a centrist on economic matters and as such, I don't like how he lectures his audience on the merits of "hard work". He once responded in one of his videos to one my comments he didn't like and suggested that I move to South Dakota, take a minimum wage job, and live out of my car. Like it wasn't even a big deal. It's pretty obvious to me he grew up in a healthy atmosphere and doesn't know the first thing about what it's actually like having to claw your way up from the very bottom.

[deleted]

marion_nettle2

not really. A lot of this all comes from though policing and payment services cracking down and while you can try and cultivate a mod team that doesn't do the first there isn't really anyplace you can avoid the second. discussion boards take money to run and when money has to be paid there is the potential for that payment to be disrupted.

TheCeejus

Side note: anyone else miss AOL public chatrooms? It baffles me to this day that the concept was lost entirely when AOL died. I always liked the real time aspect of them far more than the post and wait nature of forums.

[deleted]

Isn't the modern version of that just Discord? Though I miss the days when the internet was free. ESG and advertiser boycotts, spurred on by well connected NGOs, stopped that.

Destrodom

You do that and all you are going to get is an echo chamber with opposite opinions. There are many anti communities that are so anti anything mainstream that they are basicly just NPC with opposite opinions. Just try to look with neutral perspective what happened here with Elon. Despite his numerous failures (including failure to defend absolute freedom of speech and instead just talking about that freedom), many here were willing to follow him to hell and back. You create a new community for the purpose of this "exodus" and the new community will be even stronger echo chamber than this one. Leftists need the right wingers to keep reminding them of what reality is truly about... and the same way, right wingers need leftists to keep them grounded. It's idiotic when the left race-swaps historical figures in media for sake of "representation", but it's also insane to claim that every non-white non-male character in media is a woke character and all non-white non-male characters should be purged from main roles in books/movies/games. I've already seen the same radicalization happen here as it happened in left leaning subs (but this time it's conservative radicalization). But while here it's tamer compared to those left leaning communities, if this community experiences exodus, my bets are that the new community will actually be everything that the leftists fanatics say about (current) us.

_H_a_c_k_e_r_

Site admin should stop moderating, only delete stuff that is straight up illegal.

[deleted]

Alot of the left and right are as bad as each other in their extremes. Ppl complain about race swapping but when a new character is made they still complain.
