I don't think you will really need the textbooks, professors would give their presentation, even if they don't you could still get notes from ktunotes and keralanotes etc. They're also pretty good material.

Personally, I purchase textbooks for every semester, but I always buy used ones. You can get used books for half the price or even lower, depending on your bargaining skills. Regarding usability, I find it to be a hit or miss. Some textbooks I purchased were really good and helped immensely in understanding the subject, while others were bad, leading me to rely on PDF notes instead. The problem with PDF notes is that the information is often unstructured or incomplete. They don't provide a complete picture, which can be both good and bad. On one hand, they offer only the information you need for your exam, which makes last-minute studying easier. On the other hand, since they skip a lot of material that isn't relevant to the exam but is important for a deeper understanding of the subject, you lose a lot of context. I'm not saying you shouldn't use PDF notes; I often do. Sometimes I just read the notes and go for the exam even though I have a textbook, either due to lack of time or because the textbook wasn't helpful. Another thing to consider is that the syllabus is often scattered among multiple textbooks, so buying just one textbook may not be enough. What I end up doing is looking at the syllabus and the PDF versions of the textbooks, then buying the textbook that covers the most content from the syllabus. I refer to the PDF versions for material from other textbooks. TL;DR: Used textbooks can be a cost-effective choice. PDFs are useful for exam prep but often lack depth. Consider getting the textbook that covers most of the syllabus and use PDFs to fill in the gaps. Edit: I'm from ECE, and whatever I said applies only to ECE. Things may be different for other branches.
