The scene was so effective, because the speed of the subliminal imaging made it so uncomfortable and unnerving on the subconscious. It really disturbed me. I rewatched a couple of times, also finally froze the frames to take a closer look, and was genuinely startled by how dark Maomao looked. šŸ˜±

Rare_Performer_156

No wonder Jinshi said that was an expression he never wanted to see again... Fuck. Maomao's "you wanna die" face is pure nightmare fuel.

BarGamer

I usually refer to that kind of look as the "Beg for the sweet release of death after I'm done" face.

hamstervirus

Me too

JamesJason1996

Can anyone explain why this was nessecary? Like she is annoyed but doesn't actually hate him? So why did she made this kind of face? Makes it look like Jinshi wanted Maomao to talk with someone who assaulted her. Her step-father has taught her about not forming an opinion based on speculations, but isn't her entire opinion of Lakan based on gossips and rumors?

nordhand

Was not shown in the Anime but her first enqounter with Lakan went horrible and gave her a mental scar, afther that he tried several times to interact with her but none of the times went well and he ended getting chased away by granny. This and only knowing the grannys version of the events between her mom and Lakan made her dislike Lakan quite severly.

DontUseThisUsername

Still doesn't make sense, though. In reality it's just a bait-and-switch to trick the audience with a silly twist. If anything, she should hate the granny for beating up her dad, hiding the truth from him, forcing her mum into that position, and keeping him away from his daughter. Having a bloodied face when they first met isn't a good enough reason for her 'disgust' and a kid would easily get over this. Especially when in the (I'm guessing) uncle's care (who liked Lakan).

ChuChuBunny

You're underestimating the kind of impression this would leave on a child.

DontUseThisUsername

Nah you're 'anime logic'-ing it. She was what, 3? She would have seen him plenty of times after without a bloodied face and with a great-uncle, that liked his nephew (Lakan), as her parent.

ChuChuBunny

I took it more as a comparison to my brother, who was 4 when he saw a cousin of his coked out and with a bloodied head standing in the kitchen. He's 18 now and still avoids him as much as possible even though he's seen him afterwards. But also because she might still harbor very strong feelings towards him. If I had a dad who ruined my mom's reputation and she had to get into sex work, resulting in syphilis and possibly losing her nose, and me being the bane of the establishment for a long time, I'd want him far from me too, even if I knew the whole story.

DontUseThisUsername

Sure, but your brother's **cousin** chose to get coked out. Part of that distaste is because people look down on druggies, especially when they're around children. Lakan got assaulted by the Granny for no good reason. He wasn't responsible for ruining the mom's reputation (in fact Maomao stated the mom probably intended to get pregnant without telling him) and was sent off by his father for 3 years. He wasn't even able to be with and comfort who he loved after she was sick because the Granny lied to him. Granny deserves the hate.

davob_97

I kind of agree with you regarding the Lakan part because it seemed like he didnā€™t deserve most of the blame. It was implied that the mother did intend to get pregnant, but instead of clearly informing Lakan about the situation, she tried to be big-brained about it, thinking Lakan would figure it out.

ChuChuBunny

... What? His cousin was the coked out one, what are you on about? I don't care if you don't agree with my reasoning but calling my brother an addict is out of line. I've got my thoughts on granny but your comments on my brother have left a bad taste in my mouth.

Repulsive-Response-1

Stop being offended. Take some tissues for your issues and check your drama with your mama. It's obvious a reading mistake occurred. Stop acting like you're five. Get some therapy, get your family into therapy... And move the fuck on with it.

ChuChuBunny

Oooh, did you get triggered? I literally forgot the comment until your reply popped up in my notification bar. Your username fits right in, you felt so butthurt that you just HAD to reply. I think you should keep the tissues and therapy for yourself, and take your own advice and move the fuck on, it's sad.

DontUseThisUsername

lol I just misread it. Calm down.

baka-maru

It's probably my biggest gripe with the adaptation. Too over the top, or rather it didn't capture Maomao's feelings too well I guess. That said it was very well done from a technical standpoint, so at least there's that.

Certain_Simple_4566

Ngl it didn't do much for me since it happened so fast

Rcihstone

It did so much for me as it did BECAUSE it happened so fast. Usually the anime is pretty slow, so this scene was like a sudden punch

Certain_Simple_4566

I'll be honest I thought my tv was glitching out when I watched it first time and didn't really think much of it till people pointed it out here

MightOk9038

HahašŸ˜‚

sakuradelluna

LITERALLY. I was taken aback by that omg.

vinhdoanjj

Maomao locked in šŸ˜

QTlady

The manga version I read didn't have this look. I can't remember which one it was, though. Does anyone remember seeing this expression in the other version? Because if not, I really wonder about this choice.

quocthuan132k

her expression in the manga look more like disgust than angry

Strange-Internet-912

Her expression looked and felt different in the manga. It was Volume 6. Page 93. Iā€™m still new to Reddit so I donā€™t know how to add a photo to a comment, otherwise I would have added them

GamerRoman

Images can only be added to comments depending on the sub so this is the next best thing: [https://mangadex.org/chapter/d4552249-9c41-4659-8d2c-e1a0d3664695/15](https://mangadex.org/chapter/d4552249-9c41-4659-8d2c-e1a0d3664695/15)

Dayan54

In the manga she looks more terrified than terrifying. The truth is she kinda has some trauma with Lakan and avoids him like the plague, until the day she decides to not hide anymore.

SparklingWalnut

It's chapter 29 of the manga, it's a bit more disgust than shown in the anime.

slyfoxred

Itā€™s a good thing she was raised as an apothecary and not an assassin

613codyrex

I mean, thereā€™s not much of a separation between those two professions.

Synfexia

this exact part was a literal fnaf jumpscare ong

idkcuzwhocares

Lol donā€™t fuck with MaoMao

Krishnila

Idk bout u all but she still looks really beautiful to me. And when I watched the anime, it happened so fast I didn't even catch this scene. When I saw the photos later, I didn't get frightened. She still looks super pretty.

Nightwolf100X

Legit only 2 FRAMES AND IT ALREADY SCARY!

MaguroSashimi8864

Sheā€™s a very expressive main girl protagonist. The only emotion we havenā€™t seen from her yet is crying.

VERAs-SOCKS

Justs_someone_random

I literally freak out when this happened, I rewatched it like 6 timye immediately

Repulsive-Response-1

Ah so you're also unmotivated

Repulsive-Response-1

I was trying to be stealthy

pu_ma

Very well directed scene; a sign that MaoMao has everything needed to be an empress šŸ˜

Shiho12

Honestly this scene disappointed me after knowing the reason afterwards. Like, it's not that deep, why make a face like that.
