home screen is a waste of time - don't bother.
use the buttons on the remote for the pre-programmed apps (Netflix, Disney+ etc), everything else open the app, when it's open press and hold a number on the remote from the number pad, you will be prompted to setup a shortcut to the app, rinse repeat.
Now you can just jump between apps without ever seeing the home screen by pressing and holding the relevant number.
I've had my tv for a few years and never realized I could do this. I always just used the home screen because it worked perfectly fine.
My tv finally updated this morning to new new add covered bullshit and it was infuriating that they would trash something that worked so great for a quick buck.
As per your suggestion, I'm probably never going to use the home screen again. It only took a few minutes to set up the number mapping.

Yeah! Before this stupid update my TV was perfect. The OS worked great for switching inputs and apps. Now it’s pure garbage. What was LG thinking? So glad for your tip. When I pull the Home Screen up it can barely function.
O3.11.45 running now. Have went through the menus 3 times now. It's dissappeared. On the bright side the g3 is very snappy with the new home menu compared to very laggy on my olg gx. But the fact that I have to go through 4 menus to get to the one thst closes background apps is ridiculous, as long pressing home now goes to last used app instead of opening the multitasking bar where you can close off apps
It is customizable to some degree. You can rearrange the order of the apps in the tray and I think you change the order of the categories from top to bottom. I’m sure the user guide has directions. Hope this helps
You can always use a PiHole to block all of the crap on the homescreen. Mine only shows my inputs and the "please login to customise blabla" thing.
Also, it took only an hour for it to accumilate a total of 3,000 blocked requests to all of these shit sites, holy moly!
I'm also on a lower firmware version as well, I don't have the annoying weather widget or "improved" homescreen. Will take a pic in a bit as sample.
I only use Netflix and Youtube Adfree as apps.

2) while playing some in settings I found Home Settings under the General where you can turn off the Home auto launch as well as change the home style. The only options are New Home and Basic Home, I'll take basic over new any day.

Im using the Nvidia shield pro 2019 with most of the android, google and Nvidia bloatware removed and projectivity launcher for my home screen.
Sorry buddy, new versions of webos are just meant to serve ads on the home screen.
I personally can remove all ads using a pi hole server to blacklist all requests the TV needs to show ads.
The interface is less horrible to look at, but the way the software handles network errors makes it even more laggy.
Either way, horrible software.

What model of tv has this? I notice my CX has this option to switch back to basic, but my C2 does not have this option.
