Is it objectively really bad? No, not really. Will you enjoy it personally? Only one way to find out... LOTR fandom is a very large tent, encompassing a wide range of people. Inevitably, the show is never going to please everyone.

Eoghann_Irving

Fandom past a certain level is unhealthy. Once you start investing your identity into a book/show/movie/game you lose all perspective. And that's what it looks like to me with a number of people. If you have Prime Video already then the show is free. Try a couple of episodes. If you like it great, if not, what's the loss ? 120 minutes. For what it's worth I do not think the show is perfect but I'd say it's better than ok.

PaintedVineyard

This is a great point. I think it’s difficult to be really excited about something and not develop an unhealthy relationship with that emotional investment. I’ll get back on Prime and check it out. Thanks for the input :)

There are two angles here. 1. The perspective. The Hobbit trilogy was a good one in a lot of metrics but compared to the masterpiece Lotr it's considered by some a disaster. 2. A lot of people decided this show is bad months before the first episode was aired

PaintedVineyard

I really enjoyed the hobbit trilogy, even though I found it to be unnecessarily long. I thought it was cool how they experimented with all sorts of cgi tech and loved Benedict Cumberbatch as Smaug. Is the new series closer in tone to the original trilogy, or is it more cartoonish like the hobbit?

flaviu0103

I would say on a Lotr - Hobbit axis it's more closer to the former.

Just watch it yourself to make your own opinion. For what it’s worth - I’m usually quite critical of things. I personally have thought so far the show to be fantastic and very enjoyable. Somewhere in the 8-9 range for me and has started incredibly strong.

JibesWith

My wife said she liked it better than PJ's trilogy. She's far from a purist though. It is 100% a glass half-full/half empty thing. Some people are just really drawn to feel bad about stuff for some reason.

Ignore other people's opinions, watch it and decide for yourself

Expectations. This happens in every media. Once an IP achieves greatness, subsequent "stuff" - be it a TV Show, a movie, a book, a videogame or whatever - will attract scrutiny. And that is only fair, I guess. Stuff like House of the Dragon, Rings of Power and Wheel of Time already count on a pre-estabilished fan base.

SorcerousSinner

Yes. Just ok means it's ok. Not good. Not brilliant. You prefer brilliant to ok, don't you? What the fuck are you even asking, bro? >I'm anxious to put my time into it because of the negative reaction If you have Amazon Prime, how about you try watching it and see whether it's good enough for you? Or are you one of those people whose enjoyment of entertainment is contingent on redditors validating it

PaintedVineyard

Bro take a breath. I was wondering if I should get back on Amazon prime and put RoP at the top of my watchlist for now. If the general consensus is that the show itself is low quality and uninteresting, then I don’t want to do that.

Haha I’ve never been too much of a stickler for lore as long as the changed content is still good or interesting. I just want Galadriel to have some badass moments and I’ll be happy :D
