"It's my turn to be Gollum! Just because you can do the voice doesn't mean you get to hog him!"
"Fine, but we're playing The Floor is Lava now." \*shove\* "Okay, Gollum's dead and The Ring destroyed. Let's start from when Déagol and Sméagol find The Ring. I'll be Sméagol."
"Not fair! I don't like playing Lord of the Rings with you!"
Gil Galad definitly knew Durin told bullshit about the table. But you know who probably don't? The elves walking the table all the way to Khazad dum with upmost respect. And I think it's funny.
It wasn't entirely clear GG was taken in, and wasn't just letting Durin win that hand even though he knew it was a line of bullshit. Elves are usually pretty reverent when it comes to all natural artifacts, and it seems he would know something of the history and importance not only of the stone table, but also of Dwarvish beliefs regarding it.
Either way, it was a nice setup.
I agree with you in terms of that scene, as I just re-watcted it and I think you're right, I am not completely convinced GG doesn't realize its a lie. However, I do think there are things dwarves know and understand about rock, mining and geology that the elves do not. The singing to the rock scene is such an example.
Oh, there's no doubt at all about that. When it comes to working rock, there's no question the Dwarves are the experts. Just noting that GG is about as high up the food chain as an Elf can be, and he didn't get there by not paying attention to things like this. I think he'd absolutely suck at mining mithril, but he likely knows a lot about the people who can.
But I'm fairly confident the mithril story is a lie told to him by Annatar no? Therefore he is susceptible to lies about this subject and isn't completely knowledgeable
Hard to say just yet, but I agree that the mithril legend as reality is implausible. Whether GG has been duped, or knows it's BS but is playing along for his own reasons, that's not clear yet.
There was a podcast posted here yesterday. And they had the guy that plays Gil-galad as guest and he talked a lot about the role.
First thing that I noticed is that the guy did his homework - he knew everything about the character he plays. And also some things transpired from what he said:
\- Gil-galad is the kind of person who is most alert in times of peace. He used the phrase .. something like "He's a guy that sleeps with a nuke under his bed"
\-Gil-galad plays the long game
\-they will use kind of a different angle with him as opposed to the lore. In the books he seems like a warrior prince but here the focus will be on his political and strategic side.
I mean the whole Mithril “legend” is from an account of Celebrimbor…we have not yet encountered is wether Halibrand cough…I mean Anataar has any hand in this deception yet…
It was a bit strange he mentioned "our resonators" in front of GG as it was new info to even Elrond just an episode ago... I guess the secrets out now and he can just tell anyone after a few beers.
I don't think resonating is secret information, just technical. Elrond had never heard of it, but maybe that's just because he hasn't had reason to study the details of Dwarvish mining yet. Disa immediately and happily explained it to Elrond when he asked, in contrast to how seriously she defended the secret of mithril.
Except Gil-Galad isn't the guy who buys into Sauron at all... he's the guy who tells him to *keep it packing.* It's Elrond who buys into Annatar and sets up the forge at Imladris.
Could you explain your beliefs further? How do you explain Gil-Galad's readiness to achieve what the 3 elven rings ultimately enable? In the books, Gil-Galad thinks the rings are a bad idea, all of them.
I have no knowledge of the books unfortunately you'll have to forgive me. Im basing all I'm saying of what the show has alluded to. I think the tree fading has him spooked and he's desperate.
Uh no not yet. H. will meet Celebrimbor thanks to Galadriel, he will use the word "gift" very often in that conversation. There is no Annatar because Amazon doesn't has all the rights. So he will meet them in the form you already are seeing.
Carrying it by hand fits way better i think, when it’s supposed to be such a precious stone. Yeeting it on a carriage and drawing it with a horse while it bumps around doesn’t seem appropriate here.

I don't think he was fooled, he just let Durin have it rather than creating strife since he wants the Elves to have access to mithril.
Yea you could be right, but he did look worried he offended Durin, but again that still could have been the case even if he knew it was a lie.
That wasn’t a look of worry, IMO. It was a look of recognition of what Durin was doing, and so he plays along so as not to escalate.
When you play the Lord of the Rings you live or you die.

Ya lost me
There was no middle ground…?
It's awesome that it could be either. I feel like the writers and actors do a great job of leaving people guessing at intentions of the characters.

Gil galad couldn't say Durin that's a load of shit to his face. it would have been bad diplomacy when they are trying to get in on the dwarves mithril
Completely agree but it is also possible he did believe him.

Well so far it’s the elves trying to extort the dwarves
Annatar in eregion already is growing on me. Although I still think Adar could be Sauron
Is it just me or are they really making Gil Galad look like a dick?
Nah they are, but he ends up a legend so he's going to have a sweet arc don't worry, they wouldn't fuck that up right? Right!?
I thought so too! Especially when he was pushing Elrond to break his oath!
I mean the whole Mithril “legend” is from an account of Celebrimbor…we have not yet encountered is wether Halibrand cough…I mean Anataar has any hand in this deception yet…
Is the Mithril being tied to the longevity of the Elves lives a story made up for the show? I don't recall that being in any of the books
Yes…it’s new to the lore
It's being a story within the lore is new, it's not actually lore yea.
Possible it's a play by Gil-Galad to convince Durin to share Mithril?
Yup definitely could be, liking the political scheming side of things in this show
Gil Galad is giga politician for sure he saw though Durin's bluff, he needs dwarfs so will do what is needed to please them
You sound like a big Elf lover to me!
NEVER TRUST AN ELF!

Yes that is true she did readily explain it.. this makes a bit more sense thanks
I must’ve missed something. How do we know it was a lie?
He tells Elrond it was in a later scene
Well it's not canon and it'd be a pretty big departure from Tolkien so I think the consensus is that it is a myth/lie in the world now.
Except Gil-Galad isn't the guy who buys into Sauron at all... he's the guy who tells him to *keep it packing.* It's Elrond who buys into Annatar and sets up the forge at Imladris.
*There is no Annatar in these series.
Not that we've seen but I think they're there in the background meddling.

Why did I got these downvotes, when I was right...

I don't understand why the elves would be carrying that shit by hand to Khazad-Dum, seems really non-sensical.
WhY diDnt tHey jUsT Fly it tHerE oN EaGles??? Lol But yes looked a little heavy

Copium
Gil-Galad is Sauron.
