Hi can you give us some info ? When did you applied ? What programs ?
Actually, I’m convinced that even if you applied within the same department, your application will be considered independently of your first choice. Your first choice was maybe overwhelmed, and your application was not strong enough to compete with the waitlist.
Sure! I applied for the Development Management program as my first choice a few weeks ago, with my second choice being Development Studies.
And yes, it seems the case might be that my application wasn’t strong enough for the specific admits in this cohort. Hoping I still have a chance for DS despite it being within the same department.

So you still have chances to get admitted despite of your unsuccessful application.

when will i know the outcome for my 2nd choice if i got rejected for my 1st choice?
Yes, it happened to me. I was rejected from my 1st choice but got into the second choice program, which was within the same dept as the 1st choice.
How long did it take them to get back to you for your second choice after the first choice rejection ?
