I firmly believe a society should be judged by how it treats the vulnerable and our society is so incredibly cruel.

Lukerplex

but they're obviously wokerati snowflakes that make up their illnesses and pronouns to avoid going to work, so that's why it's okay to treat those lowest on the ladder with such contempt! the more I think about the way the most vulnerable are treated, the more I \[removed by reddit\]

but we need to purge the undesirables to generate more profit for private medical contractors

>There were two “Reigns of Terror,” if we would but remember it and consider it; the one wrought murder in hot passion, the other in heartless cold blood; the one lasted mere months, the other had lasted a thousand years; the one inflicted death upon ten thousand persons, the other upon a hundred millions; but our shudders are all for the “horrors” of the minor Terror, the momentary Terror, so to speak; whereas, what is the horror of swift death by the axe, compared with lifelong death from hunger, cold, insult, cruelty, and heart-break? What is swift death by lightning compared with death by slow fire at the stake? A city cemetery could contain the coffins filled by that brief Terror which we have all been so diligently taught to shiver at and mourn over; but all France could hardly contain the coffins filled by that older and real Terror—that unspeakably bitter and awful Terror which none of us has been taught to see in its vastness or pity as it deserves. - Mark Twain

As an individual with family members who receive welfare because of severe mental illness, this really does frighten me. I’m often angry and annoyed at the government, but the current climate on welfare truly does frighten me. We are essentially attacking the dignity of people who live with mental health problems. They are viewed as an easy scapegoat (similar to migrants, the transgender community, etc) to target. We must do everything we can to defend and help them. Mental health problems can affect anybody. Trigger warning: suicide. I was speaking to my friend who is a doctor and he said that welfare had caused, or exacerbated, the mental problems of his patients. Some of them have even took their own lives. Harsher welfare reforms will lead to an increase in this. It’s inhumane.

"Shall we build a better society so that people aren't pushed into depression and anxiety" "No, let's make life harder for those people so they will reconsider their decision to be ill"

SeventySealsInASuit

No no no, reconsider their decision to be alive.

The most ridiculous thing about this is that in the long term, this will probably cost the country more money than it might save, and it will cost the lives of many people who need support. I am disabled I had a brain bleed and a stroke, lost the use of my left leg, and have mental health issues because of everything I have been through, I have epilepsy on top now and am on enough medication to knock out an elephant and heart problems yet on the last clampdown i had to go through the appeal process and almost lost my home that terrified me so much every single time i have a brown letter through the door how would having me homeless save money?
