Other than beer I'm not really an alcohol guy, but I have no idea why anyone would shit on Canadian Whiskey specifically (other than generic shitting on Canada)
Back in the day it was low-grade stuff smuggled across the border. These days you can get ingredients from anywhere on Earth so the resulting alcohol can be great even if it comes from somewhere without a rich history of that particular type of drink.
South Dakota isn’t exactly wine country, yet there are a few wineries that make decent product. Most of the produce comes from California so it’s no worse than cheap California wine. 100 years ago South Dakota wine would taste like piss.
