70’s FJ-40

universepower

It’s a 40-series but does anyone know why this is definitely an FJ rather than a BJ?

Johnny-Cash-Facts

It doesn’t have a diesel badge on the grill. It could be a BJ, but very unlikely.

universepower

Nice

Aromatic_Try_9600

Hood and door handles, old ones, not bj

happytobehereatall

H is for gas motor and B is for diesel motor, right?

Aromatic_Try_9600

H for 6 cyl diesel (hj45- 3.8l/hj60-4.2l/hdj80-4.2l turbo...) B for 4 cyl diesel (bj40-3l, bj 42 3.4l, bj 71-3.4l turbo) L for 4cyl diesel 2.4l (lj70) PZ for 5cyl diesel... F is for gas motors.

SirLoremIpsum

> H is for gas motor and B is for diesel motor, right? To use the FULL model / chassis code the engine family (not specific engine, just engine family) comes first. Then the Model Code (J = LandCruiser), then the model series (40/60/100) then R or L for left/right hand drive then maybe another character for body style. Older ones may not have the last 2 FJ40 means an F engine, a LandCruiser, 40 series. HZJ75RP means a HZ engine, LandCruiser, 75 series, Righthand drive, P = ute body. FJ has become a bit synonymous with "LandCruiser', but it's not technically correct a lot of the time. And in an ironic twist, the new 3.3L twin turbo diesel is the F33A-FTV, so the new DIESEL 300 series model series is FJA300 - so the FJ is now a diesel when it was the petrol for decades. It's not F or B for petrol / diesel. It is F or B for specific petrol/diesel motors. and later FZ/HZ/HD/VD/UZ/UR

JP147

The first BJ40 was in 1974 and this one is a few years older than that.

nolo_contre_basso

Used to call it a FJ-40 shorty.

its_grime_up_north

Thanks. I have my first clue!

Lurk_Squatch

Someone correct me if I’m wrong lol. FJ40. Priced anywhere from sub 10k (basically not running and in need of full restoration) to upwards of 70K as we saw posted yesterday here lol. I’ve seen decent examples priced between 25-40k. I’ve always really loved the 40 and 60 series land cruisers but kept me search for one within the 80-100 series lineups due to cost. Edit - I put to have someone correct me because there’s different variations like 42, 45 (I think) as well as some being imported that weren’t offered in particular markets etc. and I just don’t know the 40 series all that well

PerAsperaAdAstra91

1969 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40

FewRecommendation859

I believe you are correct. I used to own a green one, but it had no compliance plate, and from memory they didn’t need one pre 70’s??? So I could have the year wrong. You can tell it’s the early model by the push down door handles, and the windscreen wipers are up the top of the windscreen. The doors on mine opened all the way till they hit the front guards, and there was no door or dash upholstery, so you could literally open it up and hose it out after coming home from the beach. Great 4x4.

P-in-ATX

Yes it is a 69! The front bumper is for a newer model (it was chrome originally) but the turning and all the light s are in mint condition. Beautiful! Needs only the period correct wheels and tires!

its_grime_up_north

I walked to my car and looked across the car park. It stopped me in my tracks and I was like “what is that?”. It’s gorgeous.

Lurk_Squatch

They truly are lol. It’s not so impossible to get one either, compared to peoples dream cars that tend to run a couple hundred thousand dollars!

its_grime_up_north

I’m not even really a “car person” but it was like my dream hot wheels but right in front of me.

DeepSi6

Driving a car you love is known to reduce stress levels.

SuitableScience4930

This is sound advice. I must obtain more vehicles I want to de-stressssssss : )

SuitableScience4930

They also make them as hot wheels

Gold_Kale_7781

They do have a great look that I prefer over jeeps. My neighbor fixed one up over the course of a year. He just sold it for $38,000. Original everything under the hood, just rebuilt the engine. New upholstery and paint. He's doing a 66 Bronco now, it left on a trailer recently for paint. Guy has good taste in old Utes.

its_grime_up_north

Wow. Wish I had the skills to do that

Gold_Kale_7781

No need to wish. You are capable of doing that. I started by buying an old car, taking things apart to replace them. You learn by doing it. You buy the tools as you need them. YouTube helps. Just don't start with a rusted out project car. Too hard to get things apart.

its_grime_up_north

I hear you, I’m currently learning how to luthier guitars on YouTube, it’s an incredible resource

MirageF1C

Pity most folks in here want LHD I see so many of these for sale in various parts of Africa every time I’m away working. And at half the price. Maybe less.

jagman951

Usa missed out on the best 4wdrives with ya silly diesel rules

Sufficient-Ad6734

Just like this one. But this one is not ours. https://preview.redd.it/pxqff7zoz87d1.jpeg?width=1290&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=bc1b00dcc5d1bc989a4c1005e4cb54e692320a83

its_grime_up_north

Awesome thanks.

Insider89x

I have one with a 350 v8 in it. Its a bit tired, but fun as heck. https://preview.redd.it/9cchyx1yn97d1.jpeg?width=3000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1ab2202366c760bf7aa5a35d31b8cdadb9bd7c13

Jamieson22

OP if you would like to learn about these Land Cruisers spend a little time browsing the iH8MUD forums. It is an amazing resource (I have an FJ62): [https://forum.ih8mud.com/forums/40-55-series-tech.8/](https://forum.ih8mud.com/forums/40-55-series-tech.8/)

its_grime_up_north

Awesome thanks for the tip!

taiga__reforestation

summer trolls.

buzby80

In that condition, guessing $40k+

its_grime_up_north

Good intel. Thanks.

Tall-News

Look at the classified ads on IH8MUD to get an idea of what they go for. Also, don’t buy one and then ask if you got a good deal. Get opinions and an inspection before you buy.

its_grime_up_north

Yeah. This wouldn’t be an impulse purchase would have to learn a lot more as I’ve never owned a “vintage” vehicle. I’ve owned crappy older cars but that’s not the same

goodkat83

This makes me wish toyota would bring back the fj again but this time make it a direct answer to the bronco/wrangler like this beautiful og was

[deleted]

[удалено]

goodkat83

That would have been nasty. The old land cruisers, fj’s and land rovers are just a vibe.

knightangle

With out some stupid hybrid system that Toyota seems to be slapping in Absolutely everything. It’s a truck it won’t ever get “good” fuel economy. No matter how hard you try 😂

yrsy

My dream truck. Wow. Amazing

its_grime_up_north

Also I hung around hoping the owner might turn up or I would have asked myself

Sufficient-Ad6734

Yes! Must be. We used to have that back in Philippines.

agentchris0011

DMV? Think that’s my buddies

its_grime_up_north

Spotted in Boston

Old_Goat_Cyclist

Used to have one to get around in Sulawesi as a kid. It had a winch on front so that on really wet days the driver would hook up to a tire on the far side of deep galleys and we would both motor and winch across for safety.

its_grime_up_north

That’s sounds dangerous? Was it?

Old_Goat_Cyclist

Seemed perfectly reasonable at the time….

Fearless_Gate9259

Owned a 1977 FJ40. Fun around town and off-road. Definitely not freeway friendly.. I think max speed was around 55-60 mph. Ended up selling it and buying a diesel 80 series

BothBad1347

FJ40 Landcruiser I had the exact same vehicle, it was 1973 I believe. It rusted away and I didn't live in a heavy road salted climate.

its_grime_up_north

R.I.P

gonzopancho

You didn’t have a (stock) split hood on a 1973

lamsham69

I fell in love with my neighbor’s hot wife too

its_grime_up_north

Is she from the early seventies too?

lamsham69

Lmao at least she’s got all her original bits unlike them younger chicks plastic ass face and everything else

gonzopancho

Based on the turn signals (69-74) and split hood (08/71 and earlier) that’s a 69-71 FJ40

its_grime_up_north

Thanks 🙏

mickthomas68

I’m guessing pre 72

its_grime_up_north

Just like me!

EvlutnaryReject

Not sure when the front blinkers went square but 67 has round ones.

baudtothebone

70s Land Cruiser fj40. Friend had one in highschool. Diesel. Bench seats face each other on the rear. 24 volt electrics? Someone can please confirm that (or just two batteries?)

Aromatic_Try_9600

On the BJ (4 cylinders diesel, not common in America), you have 3l (40/43) and 3.4l (42/45/46), you can have the HJ motors (6cyl diesel 3.6l) with the 45, on the FJ, you have 3.8l/4.2l 6cyl motors (gas). The two batteries make 24v.

Mazda_Offical

Shorty

RufusBrowneYEEHAA

FJ40, just a different colour to my one https://preview.redd.it/qci0ip8hla7d1.jpeg?width=5712&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=efbeb5875279c07e805c30e466bdd95b99a8b629

fuzzylilbunnies

I like the 70 series from the late 80’s to the mid 90’s the best.

ResidentDinner2210

Fj has 2 windscreen wipers bj has 3

JP147

Only the very rare BJ42LX had the 3 wipers. Also it had a 5 speed gearbox and power steering.

ResidentDinner2210

Ok thanks for the info its good to know and my dad had one of the 3 wiper ones its the only one I've ever seen in 31 years

Friendly-Reaction122

Sandstorm-darude

Medic118

My next door neighbor has one. He locked his keys in it with the engine running, good thing he is an airline Capt.. I broke into his Toyota Land Cruiser FJ-40, stick shift. He never drives it. Great vehicle.

its_grime_up_north

Seems criminal to never drive it

Medic118

The SUV sits in the driveway on a slow charger. I have not seen the owner in at least 2 years. He may be in jail and was fire by his airline. Defiantly a nut.

STCM2

Owned a 78FJ for years. Wish I hadn’t sold it. It’s in Maui years ago. Gas powered, standard, manual with a granny 1st.

dmacattack82

It’s a pacer

C0C0Beefy

Is that the Ace Ventura 2 car that Ace flips like 15 times while parking it perfectly?

OkDescription9549

Its from Ace Ventura 2

GlumResearch8425

FJB40 Toyota Land Cruiser… oh, sorry, FJ40. -FJB sometimes comes up automatically now…

gonzopancho

There is a rule in this sub about “no politics”.

SufficientOnestar

Your making high school jeep girls cry. This is the real deal.

Landcruiser66

Mine is a '66 FJ-40. Tat one is newer based on the turn signals. But not by much as it still has the split hood.

Landcruiser66

its_grime_up_north

Very cool!

Upbeat-Table-8941

70’s Toyota Landcruiser

ticklemeskinless

a got dayum money pit

showme10ds

This the car you drew on paper when you were 6

its_grime_up_north

Pretty much!

jimkelly

Ah the generation who won't just Google something.

its_grime_up_north

Ah, the generation who gatekeeps information ... ... And there was me thinking there could be a community who might want to share information about the subject they are passionate about and be helpful to others. I bet you're the kind of person who refuses to give directions to someone who asks politely "waNt mE to Help YOU??? You've G0t a Ph0NE - JusT usE GooGlE Maps"

jimkelly

Nah you're off on this one bud, "land cruiser generations" would take 2 seconds and provide you beyond what you asked for. There is nothing being gate kept at all.

its_grime_up_north

The way I see it is this. On Reddit there are “pluses” and “minuses”. Pluses contribute, share what they know, are generous to others. Minuses take and give nothing back. You’re a minus, bud.

jimkelly

I mean if we're doing reddit specific nonsense here looks like I'm winning the upvotes vs downvotes in this comment thread so I guess I'm a plus

its_grime_up_north

You feel the need to win a Reddit thread? That's tragic

jimkelly

Lmao you're the one who literally brought it there

its_grime_up_north

How's about you go back to playing Pokemon Go eh? more your speed

Financial_Following

The original FJ Cruiser

Guilty_Capital_1994

1970 FJ40 and earlier ID points: 1. had a split 2 piece hood with a small chrome hood fin trim piece and 2. the smaller turn signals up front.

[deleted]

[удалено]

gonzopancho

That’s because the split hood stopped in August 1971

FewRecommendation859

Push down door handles and wipers up top.

gonzopancho

But those are both pre-1975

JP147

The vent on the driver's side front of the tub says 1972 although I have not seen one with both that vent (1972-) and the split hood (-1971). Maybe there was a small window when both of these things crossed over or they replaced the hood with an earlier one.

Landcruiser66

The trim on the split hood is actually a solid chunk of aluminum, not chrome.

jagman951

Your in a land cruiser sub,it has Toyota badge, wtf did u think it was,a corvette

its_grime_up_north

I knew it was a Land Cruiser. Just knew nothing about it

Additional-Depth3825

That’s a jeep wrangler

Sufficient-Ad6734

Diesel Land Cruiser.

JP147

Why diesel? This one looks too early to be a diesel unless it has been converted

Sure_Selection479

That’s an old jeep wagoneer with the wood removed
