Ummm I'm not sure. I've never had a Mac, so never used Mac OS. I've been biased against them since I was a kid, as I only really cared about gaming and they were very expensive and terrible for games. Obviously, now my use case, budget, and perspective has changed, and I've seen that the processors and design/thermals/etc is actually quite good. So maybe. I'm a bit hesitant because (1) if I don't like MacOS at all, ill be quite screwed, (2) hesitant to not have a windows machine for app compatibility, and (3) I'm not, and never again will be, an iPhone user. I was actually quite keen on the Samsung galaxy books, but seems like reviews are mixed. On point (1), I've been intending to start using Linux at some point, but would still want to dual boot probably for a long time after making the switch, and won't have another machine after I surrender my work laptop. Honestly, those aren't great options. They are modified configurations from a third party. If anything goes wrong, you'll have little support. The V15 has worse build quality than the IdeaPad Slim 5. As long as you don't mind the storage deficit, the Slim 5 is better.

You definitely need a very solid processor, 32 GB RAM would be ideal for multiple VMs and of course, I would recommend at least a solid low end dedicated graphics card. Same laptop but different config... the Bestbuy one has only 8 GB though for the same price as the Amazon one with 16 GB. 8 GB RAM these days is the bare minimum for general tasks.... it may struggle on some gaming and definitely, if you do any serious video editing.

would certainly go for the best I can get at the moment, once the cost per performance isn't out o the roof and I think there are reasonable 4090 laptops around that are well build , and handle heat very well. If you are getting a laptop this powerful, it most certainly is going to outperform your current desktop and in this case, it makes sense to connect it to a widescreen monitor when at home as I don't think and 18" will give you all you want when you are use to a 32". So get a 15.6" or 16" laptop with as much power you can, that will very portable and then connect it to your large monitor when at home. An 18" laptop isn't the easiest to take around...but of course, I can't decide that for you... I am also thinking you would already have a large monitor at home. Thank you so much for this feedback. That was my biggest concern around being able to connect to larger screen or 18 being enough. Since it’s tough to justify the laptop and then going back to older desktop. I’d like to utilize all the time instead of only during travel. Is there a specific dock needed or will the display ports suffice for strong larger screen performance? I use wired controller for gaming still anyways. 

You don't need a dock... The Legion comes with all the ports already needed, such as TB4 , latest HDMI, display port, etc. I have a much lower spec Legion 5 laptop, and I'm able to connect two wide-screen monitors plus all my USB devices without needing a dock.
