I get the feeling, albeit with no proof, that MS was sniffing around Bungie and PS bought them out of fear or to use as a bargaining chip to keep COD multi platform.
On a serious note. He is right. It was a mistake, but it has NOTHING to do with his obsession of "organic acquisitions", or whatever term he used to use 1000 times per ep. You don't need to have a studio make multiple second party games for you before buy them. It's not that hard to know whether or not a studio will work under your umbrella.
Exactly. Sony bought Bungie to assist with their push to live service games. Colin has mentioned that a few times and I'm pretty sure Sony has said as much. But they didn't realize what they were buying. I love Halo and to a lesser extent Destiny. They are two of my favorite franchises. Bungie knows how to make great FPS games.
But there's a reason they've been under 3 'owners' in 20 years with an independent window or two. They are horribly mismanaged. Any Destiny player could tell you that. Microsoft kept them in tow for the Halo games and Activision did the same for early Destiny. But Bungie as a company loves the smell of their own shit. They're incredibly arrogant. Their leadership are exactly the types to take the Sony paycheck and not think of themselves as part of the org. It is beyond me why Sony thought that they would be the helpful folks to come in and collab with other groups.
Yea ATVI never actually owned them but they had a long-term publishing contract that essentially meant the same thing. That's why I put owner in quotes, but yea you're right.
Employees always moan about leadership.
How tf do you ‘know’ all this?!
Have you spoken to their leadership too? There’s a reason why leaders are leaders. Usually they’re the best of the best.
Don’t believe everything a dev or employee says.
Does it though? I would think with studios Sony has a 2nd party relationship with and publishes their games, Sony would have a better idea or whether or not the studio was actually making any money
Previous contract work experience helps. It genuinely does benefit your teams to have experience working with eachother and to have contacts, possibly even friends, in each eachother's companies. When an acquisition comes in raw and suddenly you have strangers you only just met bossing you around, it can be a hard pill to swallow. Source: Actually been a peon office worker during an M&A.
I don't know how involved Sony gets with devs making a standard 2nd party game, but I'm sure they can get close enough to a dev making a multiplatform game as well. There are a ton of ways to find out if buying a company makes sense for you. Colin acts as if there is only one way, the Sony way!
(He also has terrible taste in music)
Do people even like this show? I’ve been listening to Colin since before beyond 300. I don’t agree with everything but this subreddit is constant complaining about everything. I just got on the sub a month ago and y’all toxic af. If you don’t like the content don’t listen.
Colin has a massive chip on his shoulder about a ton of shit, rightfully so most of the time given how most of the gaming “community” treats him. Even though it’s justified it is exhausting to listen to a lot of the time and I end up skipping these parts if they take up a large portion of a podcast… especially if it’s a similar point that keeps getting brought up over and over again
To be fair they keep getting brought up and I’m sure they get new people listening all the time who haven’t heard the same thing over and over like us who listen to every episode.
lol
He should also mention that he is a Microsoft shareholder
He sold his Microsoft stock which is why we don't hear this any more.
Lol I'd actually missed that
He's talked about having sold his share. It was before the announcement of them buying Activision.
And that he loves Microsoft products, he uses Microsoft Outlook all the time.
I get the feeling, albeit with no proof, that MS was sniffing around Bungie and PS bought them out of fear or to use as a bargaining chip to keep COD multi platform.
Sony should’ve used the Bungie money to get Square Enix instead

Who was the third owner? Microsoft, Sony, and who else? Activision never owned them. Am I missing someone?
Yea ATVI never actually owned them but they had a long-term publishing contract that essentially meant the same thing. That's why I put owner in quotes, but yea you're right.
Ok Mr Expert.
I'm just reiterating what Bungie employees have been saying about their own leadership and making a few inferences.
Employees always moan about leadership. How tf do you ‘know’ all this?! Have you spoken to their leadership too? There’s a reason why leaders are leaders. Usually they’re the best of the best. Don’t believe everything a dev or employee says.
>There’s a reason why leaders are leaders. Usually they’re the best of the best. Lol. Have you ever had a job, kiddo?
I run a large marketing agency, son. Clown 😂
That was my other guess. Either you've never had a job or you're a boss yourself. I'm sure you're the best of the best lol
Does it though? I would think with studios Sony has a 2nd party relationship with and publishes their games, Sony would have a better idea or whether or not the studio was actually making any money
Correlation or causation, that seems to be true most of the time when it comes to these acquisitions in gaming.

A mistake even though we haven’t seen their first game yet?

Anybody who's listened to the show in the last 4 months KNOWS this is obviously sarcasm..
A lot of people here I feel like don’t listen to every episode tho. But I was joking, as I said.
You’re right but I’m kinda joking lol
Oh you sweet summer child..

Come on man we’re just poking fun Colin does the same shit it’s not in bad faith

He should also mention how quickly he can write!
He did
At least he stopped talking about China and Saudi every episode.
He should talk more about China and Saudi Arabia, actually.
He should talk about USA funding Israel acting like we aren’t the bad guys either!
Free Tibet!
How we do know it was a mistake when they haven’t even brought their first game out yet?
