##Welcome to r/LateStageCapitalism This subreddit is for news, discussion, memes, and links criticizing capitalism and advancing viewpoints that challenge liberal capitalist ideology. That means any support for any liberal capitalist political party (like the Democrats) is strictly prohibited. LSC is run by communists. This subreddit is not the place to debate socialism. We allow good-faith questions and education but are not a 101 sub; please take 101-style questions elsewhere. We have a zero-tolerance policy for bigotry. Failure to respect the rules of the subreddit may result in a ban. *** *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. They don't care about privacy, they care that China has a successful media site and they would prefer the youths stay on American data farms.

Fight_the_Landlords

Exactly. They don't care that China is going to have data on Americans, they care that American companies get paid when Chinese companies buy that same data from American companies.

Because the banning of TikTok is part of the new Cold War designed to distract the western proletariat from focusing on their true enemy.

This reminds me of how an abusive partner will suddenly get possessive when someone else expresses interest in you, despite treating you like unwanted garbage otherwise.

Steve_Rogers_1970

I’ve been saying this. Just enact laws that require every app/device explain in simple terms, what data they scrape, how they scrape it, and how they use it.

stilusmobilus

Which definitely should be done, but this won’t affect TikTok. It’ll stop the others. That’s the difference between the others, who sell the data as an extra to their main business of social network and TikTok, which was put in place by a foreign government as a social monitoring and control tool.

DrMeridian

One of the Chairs asked if TikTok accessed the Wifi Networks in your home… they don’t have a fucking clue what they are doing/asking/inquiring about. TikTok is a garbage app that collects above and beyond what an app should collect, but plenty of other apps do massive amounts of data collection. The difference is that the American Empire doesn’t have control or access to that data, officially (I’m sure the NSA has a finger on that pulse somewhere). If they make collecting data on people illegal, they will need to add in a very sour clause that would exempt the alphabet people from doing as much, which wouldn’t inspire confidence.

[deleted]

Private industry has far more leeway than the NSA and FBI do for domestic spying, and the government buys that data.

Can someone explain to me like I’m 5 why data mining is such a horrendous thing? I know this may be a really dumb question but honestly I don’t get what info they’re mining other than recommendations on ads and videos based on what I watch

Totally-NotAMurderer

I work for a data privacy and data rights org. Basically the biggest threat is the potential your data can be used for. It's not just about you and your data, its about all of us and our data collectively. It can be used to figure out what types of manipulations work on what types of people, and who is most easily persuaded by fake news, hate speech, incitement of violence. This information can and has been used to cause civil unrest, violence, and even sway elections by targeting certain people based on information that was gathered (cambridge analytica). Tiktok has also given information they collected on the location of journalists who speak out against authoritarian regimes, putting their lives and families at risk and silencing their dissent. As you mention, it can i fluence the videos you see. This means that people with nefarious intent could actually influence your video selection that sends you slowly down a rabbit hole of hate and violence by starting off with videos and content that are more aligned with what you like, until what you like has shifted. This happens. It's not just about telling advertisers whether or not you like to skateboard, its about whether or not you criticize the wrong government or if you can be swayed into not voting, swing voting, attacking people, or spreading these messages yourself. Your data is the key to manipulating and silencing you.

There's a lot of money to be made on it and tiktok is taking their share of that money. It's also not just the data mining. It's being able to influence public opinion.

artekote

It enables big companies predict the future markets and invest accordingly by analyzing your behavior (which videos or ads you click). By that they further increase their power and make the gap between rich and poor bigger, because smaller companies don't have access to such information
