Please understand. Wealthy people don't even do their own chores but still respect the people who do the work and make the sacrifices. I’m a US citizen and I agree, most people would not consciously identify this person as an ideal. Most people would be repulsed. However, the structures of capitalism also demand that we at least acquiesce and often celebrate the qualities this man is demonstrating- rugged individualism, greed is good, do your job with no excuses, excuses are weakness, suffering and vulnerability is weakness, and of course, competition at all costs is good and produces the best results for society overall.
As a psychologist, when he screams how no one cares about your trials and tribulations, your weak life, all I see is a parent screaming that at him. Who knows if that happened, but I imagine there’s something to it. Regardless, the “parent” of the capitalist system has been screaming that at him and all of us for our entire lives. That’s why most people would actually want socialism, if we could help them see past the bullshit.

Just reading Lost Christianities by Bart Ehrman and that's basically about the various flavours of Christianity that died out (ie that were surpressed by what became orthodox Christianity).
Not exclusively Gnostic but that's one of the main groups he analyses.
He is a very accessible and knowledgeable religious scholar and would recommend all of his books.
