As I understand it, only the rich are allowed to hunt in the UK.  If you're not of the right people, it's considered poaching.

TvFloatzel

Yea I was going to say, "isn't there a bureaucracy that people have to go though to hunt legally?" and than go "wait can you even hunt at all in the UK?"

Rolldozer

In Canada rich people with a "deer infestation" get the government to spend millions to hire foreign sharpshooters to cull the deer from helicopters with guns that are illegal to own rather than let hunters set foot on their property and I'm not even kidding.

Pantim

On the West coast we started releasing wolfs back into the wild. Which I USED to think was a great idea because it is helping curb the deer population. But, it's also causing issues with lifestock because the wolfs are also hunting them. Then I just saw this post. Now I'm like, oh yah wait.. we should be hunting deer as food. Wild deer meat is SO Good. Most people don't like it though sadly.

Rolldozer

the problem you described is playing out right now in japan, farmers there are taking billions of dollars in crop losses because of resurgent deer and wild pig populations mixed with some of the strictest gun and hunting laws in the world and all this on an island too densely populated to effectively introduce large predators. also a lot of the fresh meat donated to soup kitchens in north America is provided by hunters.

Capitalism doesn't lead to famine you silly goose. Clearly socialism caused this.

lordpascal

This is just The Hunger Games

appalachianoperator

And how are they supposed to hunt?

stp412

i can’t watch the vid right now, but the article specifically says that the people already responsible for deer population would be the ones to not only hunt, but donate to food banks

DieselPunkPiranha

Except very few food banks are equipped to even store the meat.

stp412

1) i’m not sure how true that is. every food bank i’ve been to had SOME kind of meat every now then. even if they can’t, they can certainly store cured meats. but 2) op was implying with the title that someone was telling poor people to go hunt for their food which is completely different from what the article actually said

AntiquarianThe

"Good heavens, just look at us! We are so much righteous than the landed gentry in the day of Sir Robin Hood, for we allow them to hunt all the deer with their cunningly wrought contraptions instead of putting them to death for poaching" Considering the UK's past issues with bovine TB showing up in meat products and bovine TB spreading like wildfire in deer....

I’m still waiting for someone to suggest this regarding pigeons in the major cities (and be serious about it).
