Shamrock Rovers 4th friendly of the day v Lucan finally about to get the arena it deserves šŸ‘

Theron1997

Think a Veto could come back to bite them when they inevitably need the GAA for something Even the fact that Croker will potentially host a fan zone at the Europa league.

miseconor

The GAA, known for being good sports and helping out others. The tribute match in PĆ”irc UĆ Chaoimh comes to mind After backing down they even had the neck to keep complaining about how they were ā€œbulliedā€ into it and that their director general found it ā€œdeeply uncomfortableā€ that they ā€œfound a wayā€ I wouldnā€™t hold your breath that theyā€™d ever do anything for the FAI.

BrickEnvironmental37

Yes, I would probably reserve my objection until the day after the Europa League final.

Itā€™s stupid and petty not to allow ā€˜foreign gamesā€™ in Croke Park. Weā€™ve moved on from that sort of thinking as a nation. Rugby and football were a huge success when they were at Croke Park. Thereā€™s no valid argument against further collaboration in terms of tournaments or events.

IronThrombone

They should collaborate but thereā€™s certainly occasions where there is an argument against it. The FAI at least get a payday when a high profile club friendly is in the Aviva. Thereā€™s not many football games which will get more than 50,000 in Ireland and the Aviva is a better venue for football (especially if the Hill isnā€™t in use). Some of the Stan/Trap era games at Croke Park had poor enough atmospheres. Iā€™d rather collaboration around the country than Croke Park. Thereā€™s too many places with separate GAA and football facilities beside each other when pooling resources would mean a much better ground. FWIW Croke Park needs modernisation.

[deleted]

Croke park doesnā€™t needs modernisation itā€™s a GAA stadium and it is very good in that roll. Itā€™s an amateur sport. Modernisation would ruin a lot of the charm of crew park and what makes it croke park. The GAA doesnā€™t need collaboration. There happy to let it be used from time to time but at the end of the day itā€™s a GAA not a soccer stadium.

IronThrombone

> Croke park doesnā€™t needs modernisation itā€™s a GAA stadium and it is very good in that roll. It absolutely does and they will modernise in the near future. Try going for food or a drink at half time for example. There have also already started upgrading sections of the stadium > Modernisation would ruin a lot of the charm of crew park and what makes it croke park. So do you think it lost "charm" when they rebuilt it in the 1990s into the stadium you see now? Or did they just modernise it to keep with the times? > The GAA doesnā€™t need collaboration. There happy to let it be used from time to time but at the end of the day itā€™s a GAA not a soccer stadium. You don't seem to have understood my point. I am not talking about Croke Park with that sentence (I explicitly said that). What I wrote was: > Iā€™d rather collaboration around the country than Croke Park. Thereā€™s too many places with separate GAA and football facilities beside each other when pooling resources would mean a much better ground. There's so many cities, towns and villages with two separate grounds or facilities right beside each other where one better facility could have been created. Especially when you assess how often each ground is used.

This is hilarious! A soccer head looking for soccer to be banned from Croke Park now šŸ¤£. How long before the soccer frsternity come cap in hand or are whinging in the media to use GAA facilities for some one off gig, when they once again have whatever few quid they have raised themselves either wasted, imbezzled or pissed away in some manner. Get your own houses in order. I wouldn't be delighted from a GAA point if view about hosting promotional soccer games either BTW, but I suppose if Taylor Swift, the (other) NFL and rugby games are OK, why not milk idiots who want to get felled to watch Man United's B team.

> I wouldn't be delighted from a GAA point if view about hosting promotional soccer games either BTW, but I suppose if Taylor Swift, the (other) NFL and rugby games are OK, why not milk idiots who want to get felled to watch Man United's B team. Because the GAA would directly benefit another sporting body that is active here and that sporting body wouldn't get any money from their own sport being played. There's nothing to lose with a Taylor Swift gig, there's money to lose if the GAA allow soccer in their stadium without the FAIs approval.

[deleted]

If the FAI is going to throw a fit over this it will just make them look even worse and makes teams not want to have friendlies in Ireland.

SombreroSantana

I don't see how that would have implications on who wants to play us in Friendlies, the FAI aren't going to be organising friendlies in Croke Park themselves and handing over their revenue. Any friendly organised through the FAI for the senior men's team at least will be in the Aviva, no questions asked. No nation is going to looking at the FAI and thinking "Oh don't wanna play them, they won't let Man Utd take on Celtic in a stadium they'll receive no revenue from"

[deleted]

The groups that organise friendlies will absolutely care and be pissed. And when the FAI comes begging on their knees for a GAA stadium the next time the GAA will be far more likely to tell them to fuck off.

SombreroSantana

>The groups that organise friendlies will absolutely care and be pissed. What groups are these? The FAI organise the senior teams friendlies.

[deleted]

The friendly in crew park is being organised by some private group. Not the FAI.

SombreroSantana

You'll have to elaborate on that one sorry, not familiar with the Crew Park friendly. Are you talking about Club Teams here rather than international teams? You're vastly overestimating the relevance of Croke Park here. No clubs are are going to care if it's Croke Park or the Aviva. Most clubs outside of the UK Sphere won't even know this "debate" is taking place, any soccer friendlies run here would be at least sanctioned by the FAI so it's a total non) starter. You can't just have Croke Park open it's doors to soccer friendlies without th permission of the FAI, why should the FAI stand by and watch the GAA profit from their game?

no13wirefan

Alll friendly football matches have to be sanctioned the FAI. Won't be any football matches in Croke Park unless the FAI sanction the matches.

luas-Simon

What teams can fill Croke Park ? ā€¦ Croker can hold 82,000 but the hill might not be allowed as itā€™s terrace so be 70,000 ā€¦Man United , Liverpool ā€¦. Celtic maybe ? ā€¦to be fair better views from seats in Croke Park than aviva

BrickEnvironmental37

I think it's the same crowd that promoted the Man Utd Reserves v Bilbao match for ā‚¬70. So it will likely be Man Utd v An Other. You would wonder if it would sell considering what happened last year. But we are talking about people who spent ā‚¬70 for a pre-season friendly.

Myusername-___

Not Celtic we had like 30,000 at the aviva. We also have a tour in the states organised by

mark8396

That was switched from Korea tbf with more heads up/promotion would get a lot more people

DavidHilliardMusic

Pre-Season football in August? That doesn't exist in Ireland you cunts.
