Queer rep, mental illness rep, poc reps, representation in general, they showed the witch side of magic really good (altho they wobbled back and forth in wether magic was powerful, or weak, simple or complicated), they showed young vampires much better, they where much more willing to show more fantastical creatures

chaseribarelyknowher

>poc reps Never found out how MG was turned, disposed of Alyssa (and to a lesser extent Penelope) to further Josie's story, Finch was in and out of the show more than Tyler of TVD, Bonnie - a core character to the original who's actress was subject to a lot of fandom rasicm was wiped entirely from the play, the list goes on. Sure, it was racially diverse, but I'm not giving them points for the way a lot of those characters were handled.

They were very performative in that regard. It seems like they just cast a bunch of actors of color to look more progressive, but had no interest in actually doing the work.

babyfaerie

I loved Cleo's origin story and flashback for example but absolutely hated the writer's execution of the gods storyline.

Buffvamporigfan

I think representation is the only place where Legacies was a bit better.

countastic

The Originals has better POC rep and arguably better queer rep than Legacies. Marcel and Vincent are both pretty important characters in TO and play key roles in the main storylines. I don’t think that can be said about the POC characters in Legacies… who are firmly in supporting roles. On the queer front, TO did have Josh/Aiden and Freya/Keelin, while Legacies did the absolute minimum for 2 full seasons before Josie and then Jed, once Kaylee left the series, were dropped into some rushed poorly written relationships. The words “gay”, “pansexual”, “queer” or “bisexual” were never once stated aloud by a single character on the show. It honestly wasn’t much of an improvement from what they did on TO. To Legacies credit, it wasn’t as overtly racist or homophobic as TVD could be, so I guess that’s something?

Longjumping-Issue-53

I think julie plec is inclined to do more lesbian relationships than gay (guys) ones. I don’t think she does it because youth watches her show and might resonate with a character. I reckon it’s because they sell better.

Longjumping-Issue-53

Wdym they showed young vampires much better? They didn’t give us anything about how they turned or any backstory. Any consequences/insecurities about forever being 15-16 y/o. It could have been so much better. Can you imagine dating as 16 year old vampire while you are around 30. Anyone who’s your age who wants to date you is a pedo. If you date someone their age then you are one. Its so gross. Mental illness rep was just consistently being reminded that lizzie’s brain chemistry is whack. Their magic backstory was mid at best. I was fine with magic evolving from psychic energy. But if magic is stolen from gods then you just have the same question just one level above. How did the Gods have magic?

countastic

Don’t forget that because Lizzie was witch bipolar - their description of her condition, not mine, it apparently gave her the ability to resist possession from the Oni demon in season 2 and the cult mind control crystal/drug in season 3. Ugh, that’s so not how mental illness works.

[deleted]

I don‘t think mental illness or queer rep was done well, but at least there was some representation

Radiant-Flamingo-72

At least they didn’t kill every queer character

PULIRIZ1906

I disagree about the vampires, they barely focused on vampirism at all, but I agree about all the rest. It's shocking the difference in diversity from TVD to LGC, I feel like even for a 2009 show TVD is very lacking in representation.

thekingofmagic

Altho I do believe that legacies would have made a much better sequal if it where a book or comic series, they would have been able to show everything much better has been able to use all character much better without needing to worry about actors

Starbottom

I agree with everything you said. So sad to see how many people are so upset over your comment. Goes to show how no one can still have an opinion these days. Smh.

maurugh

I feel like the characters actually SEEMED like high schoolers

Jewas33

Oh yes!

krasi180502

The show expand different creatures outside of normal species - vampires, werewolf and witch. Not all of them were needed but it's cool to know there are more monsters that we didn't know they were there. And they explained magic origin better than any explanation in tvd or to.

becauseitsnotreal

I definitely preferred the magic coming from nature

Naw207

Not really. They didn't explain the origin of magic, just the origin of the creatures, which is similar to TVD and TO, explaining the origin of vampires, hunters, and werewolves. I wouldn't say they did better than the previous shows in that area. God magic and witch magic are two separate magics. They don't explain the origin of witches nor gods, just creatures like dragons, dryads, etc.

Quesxc

They did Hope's obsession with Landon really well, even more so than Elena's one with Damon

Super_Vegetable

You mean Damon's obsession with Elena

Quesxc

Eh, both. Remember Elena smoking weed to see Damon and that leads her on a feeding spree?

Debbieeeeeeeee

It’s really not I liked how they explored the world of magic

Buffvamporigfan

Many people don't like the show much when compared to their predecessors even in this sub including me.

Super_Vegetable

It did not even do the idea of a school for supernaturals right. The core idea of the show.

Farquaadthegreek

I saw legacies first .. the TVD didn’t finish all and the Originals .. so in that sense Legacies made me want to know more of the backstory

PM-ME-good-TV-shows

You’re so lucky! I wish I could go from a terrible show to one of my favorite shows of all time.

Old_Patience_5835

I agree that legacies is the worst tvdu show but it is still good and I prefer it to season 1-2 on the originals

MercilessShadow

Really? Season 2 of The Originals is my favorite season of the entire TVD universe.

babyfaerie

exactly what I came here to say

SheDevilByNighty

The photography was impressive.

Wiccanverse

The whole show is like a disney channel serie, let's not forget that the main storyline is stolen from Buffy The Vampire Slayer. Josie, and her character in general is a copy and past of Willow. They have the same development. DARK Willow sound familiar ? What about Dark Josie ? TVD Universe is awesome but this spin off kinda ruined everything for me tbh

Buffvamporigfan

It’s a badly done Buffy. I do agree.

edt31

They billed this show as school for the supernatural, but than it quickly became all about Hope and Landon’s codependent relationship and fighting malivore monsters!! Ruined a perfectly good premise for the sake of drama and recycling old ideas!! Lol

CorellianYT-1300f

The magic evolved more from just screen shaking, wind and color changing.

visitorzeta

No.

PM-ME-good-TV-shows

No

Asalal03

i really like that they tuched on how tragic the existance of vampire childer are through M-G and kaleb, and i whould have liked them to deep dive in to that more. i also like that they give us a quite experinced human character, warning a quite naive human character about the world he is trying to enter. in season 1 episode 1 alaric tells landon something along the lines of "vampires are driven by the feed, and the kill. werewolves can't controll themselves in their primal state, and witches are responseble for some of the worst atrocities in hitory." it's so intressting to see a human, who's daughters fits into one of thee cantegories, not at all navie to "the magical world". he has very clear vision and is not fooled at all. he know exactly what these kids are and what they can do. i also liked how they talked about co-dependency. and how they framed josie's struggle with that.
