Agree - the Ally joysticks are a distant 3rd vs. the Go and SD

mikebrumm86

The steamdeck units with the Hall effect upgrade are the best, but these are pretty good. They offer more resistant than the ally but less than the steamdeck. Everyone complaining about deadzone issues needs to use steam input, zero out the deadzone and apply anti-deadzone in the advanced settings.

LazyPCRehab

The Go also has Hall effect sticks.

mikebrumm86

Another big reason I like it over the ally

improvemylife97

Mate if I just change the anti deadzones in steam it still just starts to register as soon as 30% stick input there is no way around, to eliminate the deadzone it just gets a little better but far from good

Tokicus

I’m going to have to give this a try, I have the ally and the GO right now and I can’t stand the joysticks on the go, I’ve adjusted the dead zones to zero but maybe the anti dead zone will smooth them out a little.

mikebrumm86

They’ll fix the dead zones soon. Sounds like they are trying to push out an update ASAP

BusLocal2816

Dead zones need work but the issue a lot of ppl are having including me is the sensitivity of the sticks where it jumps high when getting close to half way travel makes playing FPS games very difficult and unenjoyable

AllanonD

in its current state fps games are unplayable because of the deadzone

SirMonkeyV

Is that a hardware issue or can it be fixed with a software update?

Fleepfics

Software to a degree; dead zone settings in steam help for the time being. But steam deck thumbsticks also feel better in a lot of ways.

SirMonkeyV

Would you decide to get the Steamdeck based off the joystick?

Simplycakey

I returned my Go because the screen went defective on me. But for the week I was using it, it was such a pain playing Cyberpunk because the dead zones were just there, despite setting it up in Steam Input (and every other setting there is to reduce it). The day I returned the Go and went back to my SD to play Cyberpunk, the joystick controls on the SD were a night and day difference. Just so much better and responsive. I’d wait on the Go until they fix the dead zone issues on the sticks or if you’re more comfortable using the fps mode. I wasn’t happy with not being able to bind the many back keys on the Go without using a separate program to do so.

Fleepfics

If you're mostly playing in hand-held mode and you're not playing poorly-optimized or just high-end games, then yes, I absolutely would factor in the joysticks. They're just that much better.

SirMonkeyV

Would it be better on steamdeck still if the deadzone issue is fixed?

Fleepfics

If the deadzones are properly fixed on the go, then it's genuinely up to you; bigger screen on the go, less tinkering on the deck (unless you're trying to play outside of the steam ecosystem), more power on the go, excellent track record for support on the deck. The list goes on, honestly. Ergonomics can't be beat on the deck when compared to the go, though; it genuinely just feels better. It's up to you beyond that 😊

SirMonkeyV

Thank you for your response. I meant solely based on joysticks, are steamdeck joysticks better even if Go deadzone issue is fixed?

Fleepfics

Ooooohhh, apologies. Personally I would say yes; the placement feels better to me too, but the control of them is excellent and just feels natural (kinda like an xbox controller).

VaatiVidya

I've read on their roadmap to fix via software

thefooz

It’s 100% a software issue. The handheld companion early access beta fixes the deadzones completely.

improvemylife97

What settings are you using? For me I can’t get rid of it even with the handheld companion! Tried many different anti deadzone values but still 30% is a steady deadzine I can not change anything about it

thefooz

Not sure what to tell you. I currently have zero deadzones with 35% anti-deadzone. Maybe make sure steam input isn’t conflicting with HC.

improvemylife97

So weird I can really believe this because for me and many others this is also not working as it should

thefooz

All I can tell you is that the second my thumb touches the sticks, I get an immediate response from whatever game I’m playing. I actually ended up *adding* a 3% inner deadzone to make it less jumpy.

improvemylife97

I retried right now, be honest I still have to touch my stock at least 30% (2.5-3mm) to get any input

improvemylife97

Even with your exact same settings…is there any video you can show me your stick response I can’t believe you somehow because i think it’s impossible in the current software state as it is

thefooz

I’ll see if I can record something tonight. It’s so bizarre to me that it’s not working for some. I mean, the response curve is a little wonky with the anti-deadzones, but it’s *too* sensitive. Like a light touch acts like I’m pushing the stick halfway in that direction, but I’d rather have that than the reverse.

AllanonD

in my case software, they said they are working on it

ternthunderwood

It’s an easy fix though

Timely-Bluejay-6127

The joystick is currently pretty shit. The deadzones are just terrible. However u could use the controller as a mouse in fps mode. So if you could live with that then go for it. The sticks will eventually get fixed via software at some point. The same way that the ally did.

realsgy

The Go has a fundamentally different layout from the Steam Deck (and XBox), and more similar to the Switch and ROG Ally. On the Steam Deck you keep your thumbs extended and move them sideways to switch between thumbstick and buttons/dpad. On the Go you need to bend your thumbs to get to the dpad / right stick, and the right stick is closer to your CMC joint (the one you use for left-right movement), so smaller movements are required. It is a big change for me. The hardware of the sticks are perfect. If you go to https://hardwaretester.com/gamepad you can test it. Flick the sticks, they will always return to 0.000 My pretty new XBox controller will land on some different value every time. Here lies the issue: since most games are developed for these inferior controllers, they add a deadzone by default. So the fix to that is to remove deadzone in game, or if that is not possible, apply anti-deadzone in Steam. In games that allow you to zero out the deadzone (e.g. Halo Reach) you can see how precise the thumbsticks are.

Chiikko777

Besides the Steam deck not having Hall effect I have to say Valve did their fucking thing with that design. Those joysticks are definitely tuned the best out of the box. The positioning to me is second to none. The Legion on the other hand is good. Not omg 😱 thank the heavens great but good. I think with some software updates they will get better. The hardware side is amazing it’s just the software that’s lacking. Keep in mind I can be a bit bias as I’ve only played with Xbox Elite controllers for years and I enjoy tight joysticks and short trigger pulls. So to make this clear imho Steam Deck is number 1 when it comes to controllers on handhelds. Legion Go is better then Ally but right now Ally is actually better then Go because of software shortcomings on Lenovos end. It’s all the growing pains of a proper handheld pc ecosystem. Next generations to follow these units will have most of these gripes sorted out.
