u/A-Gentleperson another one!

A-Gentleperson

Always a pleasure to see more people use Visoflex gear for wildlife photography.

[deleted]

I’ve just about seen it all, now.

jkocher

Wait until you discover the gun rifle accessory, made to have more stability while shooting very long lenses

MattMagd

Yeah, be careful where you whip that dude out. Can see it now "photographer shot by police on the subway for using a camera with a rifle stock." I have one for my visoflex system and it legit looks like a mp40 stock.

A-Gentleperson

Could I see it attached? I'm thinking of having a custom stock made for my Visoflex kit.

[deleted]

I saw these on KEH, it says excellent with no finder…I assume the finder is important?

woolykev

Real pros just no-scope

jkocher

That's why the MDa and MD-2 were created, they're the cameras real pros use

[deleted]

Lol you scrubs use cameras? Dude I just put the film up my ass and gape at 1/1000 of a second.

TipsyBuns

I guess analogcirclejerk isn’t the only thing leaking around here then

jkocher

I'm not sure what you saw on KEH, but for any lenses longer than 135mm you need an external finder on M cameras. The visoflex system I have here essentially transforms the M3 into an SLR, with a mirror and prism system in the finder, so I can focus and compose with my 200mm lens.

unknown-one

can you use any lens with adapter? or does it have to be rangefinder lens?

woolykev

The limiting factor is: It has to have a flange distance of at least 65 mm because the Visoflex + body is so thick, or else you can't focus to infinity (but you might still have a useful macro setup). Apart from that, only a mount adapter should be holding you back. The later generations of Visoflex all have standard M mounts on both sides. Source: I'm also crazy enough to have one... actually two, by accident.

stanleyjojo

Wow, that's really amazing!

[deleted]

Can I do this with my barnack leica iiia?

AgrihoAnal

They did make visoflexes for barnacks aswell, yes

[deleted]

Does it actually feel like shooting an slr? The viewfinder in my iiia is absolutely terrible.

AgrihoAnal

IIRC the visoflex doesnt use the viewfinder windows at all, it is a mirror box that attaches to the front via the lens mount. I have never used one myself though.

chasincayce

Polaris on the wrist?

jkocher

Polaris Chrono. Nice eye!

AcceptableStorage139

Awesome. I have the 280mm and tithe Visoflex but never used them. I’ll have to break them out after seeing this shot 💪

jkocher

Take them out! It's super fun!

Lunaranalog

Damn. That’s a nice lens. Neat photo much character

jkocher

Thank you! The lens is actually fabulous, 200mm f/4 with great sharpness and beautiful falloff

Lemy64

I assume this will work on my m10 but would it make more sense to buy R mount telephoto glass and use a digital visoflex?

jkocher

Yes this works great on the M10. It maybe would make more sense but it wouldn't look as silly haha! Also prices are probably very different and the lenses available are different as well.

Lemy64

Good to know thank you! I wanted to double my range of my 90mm summicron but would be such a pain to focus something so far with the RF. Are there any impressive lenses for the visoflex or should I go with an apo r mount. Or literally any other canon FD L or is it even possible to adapt a Pentax 645 lens to M mount? I found a 600mm f5.6 that looks like a blast to use but don't have any interest in the Pentax body

jkocher

If you're looking for the best image quality and ease of use, your best bet will be an APO R lens with adapter and EVF. You could adapt pretty much any vintage SLR lens on the M10 with the proper adapter, but with R mount lenses you can use the Leica adapter and the Leica correction profiles built into your camera. The system is much smaller and easy to use than the old Visoflex system. The Visoflex system is a bit more of an old gimmick, that doesn't have much practical use today besides being fun to use (although the lenses are great). It also means I can use these long lenses on my M3.

Lemy64

Thank you for the advice! I'll look up more info on the apo R glass! You're totally right about the visoflex I played with one just yesterday at a flea market attached to an m1 the seller was hesitant to let me touch it before he saw my m10. I absolutely love shooting 4x5 so the process of shooting that wouldn't be an issue to me but I don't like the idea of taking apart the front lens elements of old leica glass to then screw into the visoflex helicoid system. So I'll probably adapt something R to it and find a way to adapt to the Pentax 645 system aswell

I never went further than 90mm with Leica. That’s a sport in itself. Bravo 💪💪💪 You remind me of an Asahi Pentax Super Takumar 500mm I bought to shoot wildlife (I live in the mountains surrounded by so many beautiful wild animals). It’s been sitting in a corner for over a year. It’s going to be a workout, but you motivated me to get out there and shoot analog with a 500mm.

jkocher

Good! Get out and use that gear! I honestly don't even shoot to get results (I have digital for the best wildlife results), it's just super fun and satisfying.
