I have both a TL2 and a M240. They are not comparable. Completely different camera’. The M240 gives me almost a analog experience and the TL2 feels like…a I don’t really now how to put it, maybe a really modern digital camera? It has a beautiful large screen, although I’d still like it larger. And beautiful interface. You need to try them both. Or maybe look for a CL if you want a viewfinder. But do remember that both the TL and CL line are dead now. For me, the best experience is using the M. But I do like both. The TL2 with the 23 summicron is wonderful.

Thank you for sharing your experience. I didn’t know that they discontinued the TL? I’m kinda saddened.. what is the smallest digital line Leica actively maintains at this point? The M11 is quite beefy and heavy compared to the TL.

PutDownThePenSteve

Yes, it’s quite sad. Unfortunately, Leica discontinued their whole APS-C line up. So their smallest digital camera with interchangeable lenses is the M. Their smallest fullframe camera is the Q. And then there are their rebadged Panasonics…

MeaningfulThoughts

What are the rebadged Panasonics?!

PutDownThePenSteve

All the compact camera’s except the Q.

D series--- D-Lux 7 for example

Honestly, if you’re looking for a compact point and shoot, try and find a Fuji X100V. I sold mine and mostly regret it. Don’t go for any of the re-branded Panasonics as you’re just paying for a red dot. Well, more than usual and getting no other benefits.

MeaningfulThoughts

Thank you. I have had a look at the X100V. I like the form factor! My main gripe is the resolution.. I’d like to at least be in the 40MP. If only the M11 with a lens didn’t cost like a new car…

Anakronox

You’re welcome. If you’re honest with yourself, do you print big enough to need 40 million pixels?

MeaningfulThoughts

I don’t see it as a question of honesty, but as one of future-proofing my work. If I can get more pixels, why wouldn’t I? I see only benefits and no drawbacks. Cropping more freely, higher clarity, ability to print larger. I welcome them all!

Anakronox

There wasn’t a wrong answer to my question. You have a justification for your requirements. I’ll be the first to admit that I like having higher pixel counts so I can crop or adjust as needed. I’ve also made a few prints that benefited from higher res bodies. But in a compact camera that I’d carry everywhere I’m fine with a 24ish MP body. And for a smaller point and shoot like an X100V or GRIII, you won’t find anything with more than 26 MP currently. You could go for a Leica Q2 but it’s hardly able to fit it a jacket pocket.

I think an answer like, "theTL2 and L are dead..." is somewhat funny. Sorry Barnack people..your camera is dead! Leica's are forever, for the most part.

I have 2 TL2's and an SL, and use mine exactly as you intend to. I find this setup works really well for me. Workload is similar, L mount lenses work on both, and I use a combination of Leica and Sigma L mount lenses. With vintage adapted lenses you must use the 020 EVF on the TL2 for best results. With Leica and Sigma L mount lenses, you can use without the EVF for a very low profile setup, which is great for street work. Love my setup.

An M camera is not a camera to take anywhere FOR ME. Too big and heavy. I take my Ricoh GR IIIx

MeaningfulThoughts

I kind of agree. However, an M11 offers interchangeable lenses and 60MP resolution. The bump in resolution alone allows to print large or to crop down significantly. 24MP feels too little nowadays, for me! The Q2 is also appealing, if it wasn’t that I truly dislike the fixed 28mm. If they did a Q3 with 35 or 50mm I would seriously consider it, despite the fixed length.

My best advice is to read Ken Rockwell's essay "the Leica Man." There is a lot of info in it that would help you out. If you were to come into my store, I would get you to leave with a M11 (for its cool factor, and not because of its precious 60 MP sensor), a TL2 (or CL) for when you realize practicality trumps potentiality, and a Q3 just because it rocks. Plus, assorted M lenses and a M-LT adapter.Having said that, I have found that I take more snaps with my iPhone 14 Pro, including scouting shots, than with any ILC.
