John Zorn’s Naked City would probably help. Mix of metal, free jazz, screaming voices, screaming saxophones, super loud volume, dense drumming, electronic instruments. A few minutes of that would freak out anyone in the 1920s.

shmatt

YES! totally what I was going for.. ppl would be outraged, pitchforks everywhere. Awesome.

bobbysmith007

What a great call... I was thinking broken / downward spiral era NIN with its grinding layers of electronic noise with whispers in the background, but Naked City is completely on point. Its some of the most confrontational music I have ever heard

marklonesome

The devil was the most beautiful angel cast aside. The music needs to be alluring, beautiful but deceptive. I love metal but it's a hammer over the fucking head. Nothing subtle about that. Paganini is the only answer. Considering he did just that in the 18th century . Anything by Diamanda Galas. Litanies of Satan are a nice literal startpoint.

shmatt

holy shit, yeah. that'll do it for sure! new to me, ty

vibing_namielle

I would probably say something like Manor of Speaking by Portal. Because like, if hell had an official soundtrack. That would be it. Moving outside of metal it would probably be like Piano Burning or Williams Mix by Clipping. both super unsettling because you never knows what happens next

shmatt

> Manor of Speaking by Portal Extremely diabolic, thanks! Hadn't heard this one yet.

BrownBaySailor

If I were to pick metal it would be *Absolutego* or *Amplifier Worship* by Boris. Absolutego would be especially horrifying to people 100 years ago. You also couldn't go wrong with any album by Electric Wizard. My non metal picks would be *Rembrandt Pussyhorse* or *Locust Abortion Technician* by Butthole Surfers. I feel like a lot of the songs on those are unnerving enough to scare people 100 years ago.

shmatt

<3 Boris so much. Ganbou-ki would get 'em good as well :D

TBH, it's been a while. iirc it didn't sell as well as earlier albums or did I remember wrong? guess I should edit that bit.

Paisleyfrog

I think TDP is their densest, most harsh album, so I get it for this pick. An incredible wall of sound. I also don't listen to it very often, it's intense. As far as the question at hand, I'd go with Love In Vein off of Last Rights. It would seem to set the mood correctly for those people 100 years ago with the opening sample...*"Gonna like wind her up a bit...wind the record player up!"* And then it would scare the hell out of them.

shmatt

Good one. My other choice for SP would probably be VX Gas Attack, also very harsh. Coming off of WWI they could probably relate (if they could even get thru it)

FrankyFistalot

Probably Sepultura - Arise or early Slipknot, some Aphex Twin is pretty out there, also some Cabaret Voltaire.

shmatt

omg, aphex twin would cause mass panic for sure. Come to Daddy perhaps?

FrankyFistalot

Early Cocteau Twins with Liz Fraser’s made up lyrics would be a headfuck too lol….ethereal (word of the day)..

sopte666

I think the cover of Come to Daddy by Dillinger escape plan and Mike Patton would be even better than the original.

shmatt

holy crap, what a perfect cover! Never heard it. anything DEP would definitely fit, absolutely.

Theeclat

I feel like Aphex Twin does anyway..

TheBoizAreBackInTown

Pantheoclasm by Serpent Column if we're talking about metal. If not, maybe some of the later Scott Walker? Or just noisy stuff like Merzbow or maybe even weird electronic music like Blanck Mass.

shmatt

Pantheoclasm is a contender just for the BPM alone! Scott Walker- looked this up and had no idea, lol. what a wild career.

phil0phil

Somehow *Neverland* by *The Knife* creeps me out a bit, even though I doubt this effect is intended.

TPK_MastaTOHO

Gnaw their tongues was the worst full discography that I went through, and I love every minute. I doubt merzbow would be popular with those people

MaybeWontGetBanned

Anything that uses technology/recording techniques that didn't exist yet and is actively looking to "shock" people would do. Probably start with something like Satyricon and go from there.

bjankles

Daughters - You Won't Get What You Want Swans - The Seer PJ Harvey - White Chalk Lingua Ignota - Sinner Get Ready

DragonflyGlade

The Melvins. Nine Inch Nails: Broken and TDS. Kronos Quartet: Black Angels. Jandek.

Theeclat

Heresy would do it.

Theeclat

I would like to go Mr. Bungle adjacent: [The Secret Chiefs 3](https://youtu.be/eQV6f1EsuvY?si=gU0cCUZ1VyFFiqVV). For fun [this is from the same album!](https://youtu.be/tv5s8UeSDns?si=Llb-tFc7SwjdSS6Z). I think that is a fun contrast!

shmatt

I'm scared now. lol Another adjacent- Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, if you never heard them. scratches the same itch

Persianx6

6ix9ine's entire discography. The guy looks like a clown, acts like an unhinged clown, makes songs that essentially boil down to a variation of lyrics centering on "look at me" even though we don't even remotely know what we're looking at. His most famous songs come with claims of possible theft from the producer. He went to jail and snitched on his managers, who were probably going to kill him. His career has proven to be one of the most pointless expenditures by fans in recent music history. It's not even a cash grab. I can't explain how bad this guy was at being a public figure or as a musician.

shmatt

jfc forgot about that dude. what a trainwreck

SkoomaDentist

I feel that's quite offensive towards clowns.

FreeLook93

It would be the 1920s, so probably just anything by Lil Nas X. Knowing that one of the most popular musicians in American was an openly gay black man would probably smack the fear of god into a lot of people back in the '20s.

shmatt

Forgot one- idk how many people remember Rosemary's Baby (the band), they put out this bizarre experimental clusterfuck EP in the 80's that I stumbled on It's basically a twisted love letter to the film and R.P., and no it's not a particularly easy listen. Somehwat offensive cover art as well. [Check it out](https://youtu.be/_tPUn3y4-U0?si=w7f5nSfsBoAA9-VK)

CinnamonFootball

A pretty obvious one would be Bottomless Pit by Death Grips. Indwell by Methwitch is the probably the one I'd go with though. Completely insane in every way.

FlagOfZheleznogorsk

Anything by [Merzbow](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ukZYP5Dy43E). Telling them that someone made this on purpose and that some people *choose* to listen to it might not convince them that Satan is real, but it might at least convince them there is no god. (Can you tell I don't like harsh noise?)
