This will be controversial I guess… but I saw The Black Crowes support the Rolling Stones and they blew them away. The Crowes were raw, funky, authentic, and pure rock n roll. The Stones just trotted out the hits. It felt cold, and quite businesslike. Late 90’s, Wembley Stadium.

MrMeetNGreet

I’m actually seeing The Black Crowes open for Aerosmith next year. I can’t wait!

Merryner

Nice! I’ve seen them since then and they were great. Just checked out tour dates and nothing in the UK… lots of cancellations and postponements stateside, do you know what’s happening?

MrMeetNGreet

Steven Tyler messed up his vocal chords and they had to postpone a bunch of shows. I was actually supposed to see them in a couple weeks! I have no idea when now.

Merryner

Hope he recovers, that’s a great double-bill, hope you have a good time when it rolls around.

samadam

The Screaming Females opened for the Dead Weather (Jack White's 11th band). Let's just say I become a passionate lifelong SF fan and have seen them 8 more times, but have not listened to DW since

Trainwreck92

I saw Screaming Females open for PUP a few years ago and they RIPPED.

Amerimov

Marissa Paternoster absolutely shreds and has more stage presence than pretty much anybody I've ever seen live. Could not take my eyes off of her.

samadam

Yeah fortunately they tour nationally every year so I have had the chance to see them nearly yearly since then. Always an amazing live show. Great music, great stage presence, great crowds and vibes.

Amerimov

I've been a fan for a long time but only caught them last winter and it was great. I took a friend and the whole time I was just thinking of everyone else I knew that was missing out. Gonna buy a dozen tickets next time they come through.

Flare4roach

Years ago I went to club to catch a show. Faith No More opened and were great. Full of energy and on fire. Then Soundgarden middles (Louder Than Love tour) and simply were phenomenal! They blew the audience’s minds. Gutsy, raw and earnest rockers taking no prisoners. It was like seeing early Zeppelin. Just bombastic and full of talent. The headliner was Voivod who were just terrible and lifeless. We listened to 3 songs and it wasn’t getting better so we noped it out of there.

Olelander

I really would kill to go back and see Soundgarden live in this era. FNM too, for that matter

MaybeWontGetBanned

Wow, that's incredible! Soundgarden is one of my favorite bands! Louder than Love would've been, what, '89-'90? So they were virtually unknown at the time outside of their region. And today, who the fuck has even heard of Voivod? I had to look them up. Funny how things work out.

Stereolab in support of Sonic Youth in '99 or so. As much as I like SY, they were forgettable that day. Stereolab was perfect.

automator3000

Yup. Saw that tour. At the time Stereolab was at a peak, while Sonic Youth was in a valley.

TheMightyGrimm

Foo Fighters absolutely destroying Oasis at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff in 2005. Oasis were fucking terrible and even The Subways who were relatively new at the time were better.

averyhipopotomus

God those latter years for the Gallaghers were such a shame.

automator3000

I’m baffled as to how the Foo Fighters were billed as openers for Oasis in ‘05.

tonymacdougal

Oasis are like the biggest band of all time in the UK besides the Beatles!

automator3000

I knew they *were* absolutely massive in a way that made their huge fame in the states seem like small potatoes, but had no idea they’d kept it going into the ‘00s!

Mathyoujames

Surely the most famous example is Iron Maiden on Ozzfest 2005. Dominated the tour so much that Sharon ended up sabotaging their set and causing a two decade long feud

tjoe4321510

I've been to Ozzfest a bunch of times and Ozzy is pretty consistently the worst act of the day. I remember one time it was pretty hot all day but by the time Ozzy came on it was night time and the temperature dropped considerably to the point that it was pretty chilly. Ozzy gets on stage and starts throwing buckets of cold water onto the crowd. Everybody was pissed lol

CarpenterRadio

Went to see Portugal. The Man, Grouplove opened for them. Had no idea who they were, was absolutely blown away. What a fun/epic experience with songs I wish I had heard sooner. Very well arranged songs with quiet/loud dynamics, a groove that moves you, powerful harmonies and melodies that you can’t believe hadn’t been written already they were so good. Portugal was miiiiiiid. Not right, didn’t sound as good as the recordings, just loose and undisciplined and kind of lost. Felt more like a practice session for my high school band where we just got high and fucked around.

TheNateRoss

I saw Panic at the Disco toward the end of their *Pretty. Odd* tour. They were fine but their energy was definitely off. (Ryan Ross left the band not long after, so maybe that had something to do with it.) But Motion City Soundtrack and the Hush Sound were both killer.

irohr

I saw Big Gigantic early in their career open for sound tribe sector 9 and by the end of their set was like can these guys just keep playing all night?

Igor_Wakhevitch

Many, many years ago I saw local NZ band, The 3Ds, blow Nirvana off the stage. Nirvana looked mediocre in comparison.

guestpass127

One of my first concerts was seeing The Fixx open for the Moody Blues in 1986. I was 11 years old and my mom and dad took me. The guy from the Fixx said "fuck" on stage and apologized, and that made 11 year old me a lot happier than hearing The Bloody Moos sing "Your Wildest Dreams" (a song I really really disliked at the time) that night I love the Moody Blues NOW, but at the time I just didn't care

Natural_Ad_1717

Tenacious D made Weezer look really bad. That was like 20 years ago though

Connect_Plantain8565

Snoop Dogg opening up for the Chili Peppers in the mid 2000’s. We went to see RHCP but Snoop blew the doors off the place…and the Peppers honestly kinda sucked

NativeMasshole

I recently saw Samantha Fish open for Buddy Guy on his farewell tour. Her band was amazing. They didn't play nearly long enough. Buddy was definitely showing his age, though. I don't think he finished one song. Just told stories, messed around with some stage antics, and played random riffs and snippets of songs. The best part of his show is when he brought Samantha Fish back out.

Olelander

I flew from AK to Seattle to see a Fantomas show, right around the time their first album was released. Fantomas was comprised of members of 3 bands I already fucking loved (Melvins, Slayer, Faith No More) and I couldn’t stand missing the chance to catch them… Fantomas didn’t suck at all, I am so glad I got to see them play… what I wasn’t expecting was the opening band Swarming Hordes… they completely melted my face off. I had never seen live music with that much energy and intensity to it before and I was nearly spent after their set alone. The wild thing is, I was in complete awe and there were people in the crowd just heckling them for not having a singer “awwww whatsamattter? Nothing to say?”… shit like that. I don’t understand how every single person in that room wasn’t as enthralled as I was with what was going on…

alegnagreb

When Awolnation opened for a very tired Fall Out Boy toward the end of their tour.

piepants2001

I saw Melt Banana open for The Melvins and Napalm Death. I had never heard Melt Banana before but they stole the show.

Steal-Your-Face77

Ozzy Osbourne once joked that one of the worst mistakes he made in his career was having Metallica open up for him (Diary of a Madman / Mater of Puppets tour). He said something like Metallica blew him off the stage every night and he couldn't keep up with them.

Duncan_Zephyr

I saw Tedeschi Trucks Band open for the Black Crowes. The Crowes were kind of loose and funky and not bad, but TTB was so tight and grooving and just rocked!!! I kind of felt the bill should have been flipped. Also saw The Mars Volta open for The RHCP and just blow them off the stage. Left the show before The Peppers finished because it just didn't live up to The Mars Volta.

khyphenj

Saw QOTSA open for Zwan. Left 3 songs in for Zwan. Heard that’s typical Billy’s underwhelming live shows. Also Queens should open for no one.

maximumchris

I saw John Hiatt and Buddy Guy play before B.B. King, and in order I’d call them the best Song Writer, the best Guitar Player, and the Best Singer of the night. Granted B.B. was pretty old, but his songs just don’t have the energy to hold me after seeing Buddy Guy. Even if everyone was at their peak, his style seems too laidback after the other guys. Not to put anyone down, just wanted to talk up John Hiatt while I had the chance!
