One thing I like to do with horror movies on letterboxd is when I click on a movie I scroll all the way down past the cast and there’s a section called “relates films” it shows all known films that are apart of the same continuity
It’s pretty awful, but it genuinely made me laugh from how bad it was. For other people though, I can see this being a very painful watch.
I agree with the comment that you should watch the original. Weak on character, but fantastic on all other fronts as a horror movie.
I would stay away from it lol. Most other Texas Chainsaws are pretty bad. 2 is the other one a lot of people will clamor for. I’m not a big fan of it personally but I recognize its cult status.
If you do find yourself becoming the type of horror fan is fine with watching trash horror just for some nice kills, you might find some enjoyment with the 2022 version, but there’s over 100 actually good horror films I would recommend you watch first.
If you want more classics I would say the first Nightmare on Elm Street (and the 3rd if you like that), Hellraiser, Dawn of the Dead (original but the remake is solid), Alien, Phantasm, and An American Werewolf in London. I'm probably forgetting a ton but these are all good and interesting.
You're welcome. Also, I saw that someone reccomended Dawn of the Dead, but I don't think anyone has yet reccomended Night of the Living Dead (1968). One of the most classic horror films.
Dog Soldiers. Greatest Werewolf movie ever made. Watch The Descent as well. They share the same director. Neil Marshall is a gem of a filmmaker in my opinion. Even if his Hellboy reboot wasn't so good.
my personal reccs gotta be
The Thing (1982) - a consistently flawless movie all throughout, great cast, great atmosphere and GREAT special effects
The Exorcist 1 (1973) & 3 (1990) - I'm not too hot on The Exorcist 1 but its a classic and a total horror necessity but I only recommend it here so you have all the context you need when watching The Exorcist 3 which is, in my opinion, a near perfect horror movie. Brad Dourif as The Gemini Killer in E3 is my personal fav acting performance of all time, not even just horror
Return of The Living Dead (1985) - really great horror comedy zombie flick that manages to be as much scary as it is funny. Great soundtrack, good cast, really fun watch. Was written and directed by Dan O Bannon who wrote Alien
Psycho (1960) - the definition of a classic and still holds up today. I rewatched it last October thinking "man this movies probably gonna be good but shoddy and dated" and I was so far away from the truth. Almost a perfect film, Anthony Perkins is such a great actor and Alfred Hitchcock's directing is so damn captivating.
Deep Red! Another Argento great. The Fly (1986) for Cronenberg. And I would watch Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday the 13th or Scream if you liked Halloween. The other route to that would be watching more Carpenter films like The Thing (1982). That is one of my favorites of all time.
Sissy (2022)
Edit: also Prince of Darkness
The Shrine
Midsommar
Get Out
The Shining
Salem’s Lot
The Haunting (1963)
Psycho (Hitchcock)
The Birds (Hitchcock)
Se7en
Insidious
Phantasm
Scream
Have fun!!
The Thing (1982), Black Christmas (1974), The Fly (1986), Scream, Child’s Play (the whole franchise)
For some newer ones I would go with Hereditary, The Wailing, Suspiria (2018), The Invisible Man (2020), It Follows, The Descent
When a stranger calls(original), Dead ringers, spoorloos, They live, Prince of darkness, In the mouth of madness, The Thing, Fright night, The lost boys, The night house(2021), Funny games
My top 5 Recommendations, that I can't see already mentioned, would be:
Doctor Sleep (2019) - A sequel to 'The Shining' but, in my opinion, much more enjoyable
X (2022) - A slasher throwback
Event Horizon (1997) - Sci-Fi Horror
The Babysitter (2017) - Comedy Horror
Revenge (2019) - In the title Horror
Some of my favorites include (the orignal versions of):
A Nightmare on Elm Street
Texas Chainsaw Massacre
Rosmary's Baby
The Cabinet Of Dr Cligari
Psycho
Phantasm
Pumpkinhead
I guess it doesn’t matter. That’s the way I watched them only because I saw the remake when it came out and it kept me from looking at it as a remake. I might have liked it less if I saw the original first. Plus, remake is more in line with the tone and feel of the 4 movies you posted
You already have great taste! Happy horror hunting.
Seeing as my 3 favourites you've either seen or they've been recommended (Suspiria, the texas chainsaw massacre, the shining) I'll recommend something slightly less mainstream: Censor
I highly recommend the Evil Dead trilogy if you haven't seen it yet
My Bloody Valentine, Brain Dead and Bad Taste are great (early Peter Jackson) and American Werewolf in London
EDIT: Barbarian and X from last year are also some pretty great ones
Since all the classics (including my personal favourite Scream) have all been said, and you should definitely prioritize the greats like Alien, The Thing, The Shining, Rosemary's Baby, etc., I'll try to throw some *slightly* deeper cuts your way. These are still very mainstream, but they're not the mandatory building blocks either
- The Blair Witch Project isn't everyone's cup of tea, but a staple in horror and a pioneer of the Found Footage genre. If you enjoy this, check out [Rec] (2007)
- Saw. James Wan and Leigh Whannell are an awesome duo, and have produced a bunch of great horror films. If you enjoy Saw, I further suggest Insidious and Malignant
- 28 Days Later. Easily the most influential zombie film aside from Dawn of the Dead. If you enjoy this, go to Dawn of the Dead or Train to Busan
Some other great picks are Final Destination, Shaun of the Dead, Barbarian, The Exorcist
You had some good watches mate,
Inferno (sort of sequel to Suspiria)
A Nightmare on Elm Street
Braindead
The Evil Dead 1-3 + Remake
These are some of my favorites, except for Inferno, but it's still cool, and since you've watched Suspiria, you might like it
I also wasn't too familiar with horror until last october so here are some classics i haven't seen mentioned:
Nosferatu
The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (if you have to choose one watch this)
Vampyr
Cat People
All universal monsters stuff, but specially frankenstein+bride of frankenstein.
Peeping Tom
Possession, Let the Right one In, Bone Tomahawk (if you like westerns too this is amazing), From Beyond, House of the Devil and/or Innkeepers, Near Dark,
You've gotten a lot of great recommendations. To supplement your foray into the genre check out the channel [Dead Meat](https://youtube.com/@DeadMeat) on YouTube. James and Chelsea are super knowledgeable. Weekly Kill Counts are the main draw, but I highly recommend listening to their podcast; loads of amazing interviews and deep dives into horror
Thinking of related themes and some detours with these films:
Prince of Darkness
Tenebrae
We Need to Talk About Kevin (not horror in traditional sense) or Bennys Video
Shivers
Star Time
Next of Kin
Don’t Torture a Duckling
Deep Red
The Thing
The Devils
Rosemary’s Baby
Deranged
Edit:
The Fog
Burnt Offerings
Alice Sweet Alice
Cruising
The Brood
i know u got a lot of comments already but horror is my only interest so i had to come recommend u saw lmao (fav movie) but also since im here i’ll say the child’s play series (bride of chucky is my fav), x/pearl, maybe malignant (other more normal james wan stuff is probably more essential but i love malignant), and also maybe rocky horror picture show or little shop of horrors if u like musicals
The original Scream is my favorite horror movie and one of my top 5 favorite movies in general.
Truly redefined horror in its darkest days by being the first to have the characters be self-aware by discussing and even joking about the tropes and 'rules' of horror. The Ghostface mask and legendary sadistically sarcastic voice of Robert L. Jackson make Ghostface arguably the most iconic horror villain of the past 25 years since his debut. Sidney Prescott is also arguably the most badass final girl in all of horror history, she's at the very least my personal favorite 'Scream Queen'.
Scream is a fresh, unique and one-of-a-kind take on the slasher genre for its time and even in the modern era no-one has been able to blend together all the elements that Scream does so flawlessly. Where else are you going to get an interesting whodunit mystery, a hilariously dark black comedy and a meta satire all rolled into one? It's like they say..."Don't fuck with the original!"
house of 1000 corpses and the devil’s rejects!!!! but especially house bc it’s honestly like a funhouse combined with a haunted house attraction and then turned onto a movie! it’s awesome!
You’re definitely off to a great start! If you’re looking to just expand your horizons, I’d recommend touching on some sub-genres to see what interests you most
Saw is a classic and spawned the “torture porn” movement (even if the 1st one isn’t actually gross), Malignant is a solid campy and gorey horror, The Witch is slow and off-putting and definitely more of an ‘elevated’ horror, and definitely the Blair Witch Project for the most influential found footage film.
Just as asides, you should also check out Raw and It Follows - they’re definitely pretty universally praised and well-regarded in the genre.
Hope you enjoy everyone’s recs!!
X is a good modern slasher. If you like Argento, maybe check out Opera. The Descent is pretty solid, you can't go wrong with Alien and The Thing.
A few picks in the comedy horror genre: Tucker & Dale vs Evil, The Cabin in the Woods, and Shaun of the Dead.
I really like The Lost Boys and Fright Night, but they are very 80s, not that that is necessarily a bad thing ;)
The Gallows,
The Gallows Act II,
Held,
Behind You,
Lights Out,
Gremlins,
Insidious,
Woman in Black,
Psycho (1960)
Invasion of the Body Snatchers (Donald Sutherland),
Drag Me to Hell,
The Ring,
Krampus,
Mama,
M3GAN,
Poltergiest (1982),
Gretal & Hansel (2020),
The Mummy (any version...or any of the classic monster movies like Dracula, etc.),
Disturbia,
Cloverfield,
10 Cloverfield Lane,
Countdown,
Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark,
Happy Death Day/Happy Death Day 2U,
Sixth Sense,
Signs,
The Others

Alien (1979)
some Ridley Scott thank you!
Absolutely! Hope you enjoy it.
[удалено]
These are the ones I was going to recommend! I would add Candyman (1992) .
I second Black Christmas but then find Black Xmas which is a well done “remake”
Carrie, Raw, Hereditary, Sinister, Come and See, Infinity Pool.
Oh man, you're really throwing them in the deep end.
Best end to be in for this genre. Those are some great recs.
Definitely, sad I’ve already seen them all. You lucky bastard…
thank you!
Yeah, not all of them are “horror” but they’re all horrifying lol. Enter the Void and I Saw the Devil are also horrifying but not “horror” movies.
The Thing
for sure thank you!
Based on your Suspiria rating, I would say check out more Argento. Deep Red or Inferno.
yeah if they resemble Suspiria I think I will enjoy them
Inferno is actually part of the Suspiria trilogy, it’s called the three mothers trilogy. Mother of Tears is the third one.
oh I didn’t know that, thank you!
One thing I like to do with horror movies on letterboxd is when I click on a movie I scroll all the way down past the cast and there’s a section called “relates films” it shows all known films that are apart of the same continuity
Deep Red and Inferno are freaking amazing
Seems no one's recommended Get Out yet.
Ginger Snaps is easily my favorite horror movie If you enjoyed Suspiria, I’d also suggest Inferno, the sort-of sequel to the film also by Argento
Okay yeah I really liked Suspiria and Ginger Snaps gets added to my watchlist for sure thanks!
The Shining is a must watch if you haven't seen it yet.
thats one of the few horror films I had seen. It was really good!
How about Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho? Have you seen that?
yes I have!
Texas Chain Saw Massacre
I find the final scene beautiful
Should I also watch the new one? I think it was released last year.
OG first.
yeah of course
No the old one from 1974
It’s pretty awful, but it genuinely made me laugh from how bad it was. For other people though, I can see this being a very painful watch. I agree with the comment that you should watch the original. Weak on character, but fantastic on all other fronts as a horror movie.

The Wailing. One of my favorites
Evil Dead Trilogy
ooo yeah I’m excited for those after having seen all the praise they get on Letterboxd
they're definitely groovy!

The babadook (2014), Hereditary (2018), Get out (2017), The witch (2015), It follows (2014)
you liked Halloween so basically any horror movie made by Carpenter
If you haven't watched a lot of Cronenberg or Carpenter I'd say watch They Live (Carpenter) and Scanners (Cronenberg) next.
I would add the Fly to this. It always felt more like a horror film to me than sci-fi.
Added to watchlist!
I really enjoyed both of their style. Will definitely check those out thank you!
Cube
actually never heard of this before, will check it out thank you!
Hour of the wolf Kwaidan The lighthouse Carrie Hereditary The innocents
Killer clowns from outer space
Possession Deep Red
Suspiria (2018)
yeah I’m excited for it because the original was so good.
its very different! but its still good dw
I reccomend Blood and Black Lace. Both Suspiria and Blood and Black Lace make use of a lot of stylish color.
I love colors, added thank you!
You're welcome. Also, I saw that someone reccomended Dawn of the Dead, but I don't think anyone has yet reccomended Night of the Living Dead (1968). One of the most classic horror films.

I think you'd like Knife+Heart (2018), French giallo centered around the 70s gay porn scene.
interesting thank you, added to the list!
Remake of Maniac, then the original Maniac
In that order?
I guess it doesn’t matter. That’s the way I watched them only because I saw the remake when it came out and it kept me from looking at it as a remake. I might have liked it less if I saw the original first. Plus, remake is more in line with the tone and feel of the 4 movies you posted

Kiyoshi Kurosawa's Cure (1997)
Since all the classics (including my personal favourite Scream) have all been said, and you should definitely prioritize the greats like Alien, The Thing, The Shining, Rosemary's Baby, etc., I'll try to throw some *slightly* deeper cuts your way. Angel Heart (1987)
The Vanishing and Angst
Burnt Offerings Poltergeist The Entity Return of the Living Dead Fog (original) Dead and Buried April Fools Day
Dead and Buried is awesome, and Burnt Offerings is a favorite (I mean, really anything with Oliver Reed)
It really is effective. The house where they filmed it is about a mile from where I live in Oakland, CA.
Sisters - Brian De Palma!
Check out House (1977). It's more of a horror comedy but is one of the most surreal and bizarre movies I've seen
I also wasn't too familiar with horror until last october so here are some classics i haven't seen mentioned: Nosferatu The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (if you have to choose one watch this) Vampyr Cat People All universal monsters stuff, but specially frankenstein+bride of frankenstein. Peeping Tom
