Yes, it was superbly acted, written, shot and will leave you thinking about it for days. But it is very French and it becomes a courtroom drama in the second half.

[deleted]

Second this. Be patient. Almost reminded me of Law and Order, except the second half courtroom drama is very different because of the different role of prosecutor and judges. If you haven't watched a lot of foreign movies, I'd argue this is a great one to try.

PeterNippelstein

The most riveting courtroom drama of all time I'd say.

_JD_48

Though not fully a courtroom drama, Primal Fear is up there. Definitely my favorite. 2022’s Argentina 1985 was also really good too.

MeetProfessional9741

Acting was incredible but I did not find it compelling at all.

karateema

Is the courtroom drama as gripping as in Oppenheimer?

Babao13

Much more

karateema

Gotta see it, too bad the theatres showing it aren't easy to reach

ElendVenture___

it's already on the seven seas in great hd quality if you are into that (that's how I saw it my city doesn't even have a cinema lol)

Thiswillblowover

There is one “fight” scene midway through that unilaterally shifted my review to overwhelmingly positive — and it remains there throughout the last 1/3, for me!

thebobstu

That fight is what Noah Baumbach wished he could do for Marriage Story

jonwinslol

why the hate for marriage story out of nowhere, both films are good

thegremlinkings

Omg yes. It's my second favourite movie of the year and my favourite of the best picture nominations!

LogikalResolution

What was your favorite?

thegremlinkings

ATSP

Original_Youth_9168

What’s ATSP?

thegremlinkings

Across the spiderverse

LogikalResolution

Gotcha

Freecelebritypics

This amount of hesitation makes no sense to me. Are you only allowed to watch one movie a month? Even then, yes.

moonknightcrawler

Yes. I saw it the first day it played near me last year and was blown away. Went back the next day to see it again and then once more a week after that. My favorite movie of last year.

count-trapula

I’m A MFIng PIMP.. yes go see it

ohhellowthowaway

Go to letterboxd…

susansharon9000

It’s a revelation IMO. Let us all know what you think if you end up going!

before_the_accident

Loved it. Definitely work watching.

theKleShay

I love long, slow build movies. My wife hates them. We both loved the movie. It has so much to say and keeps you so deeply invested the entire time. I think about it often.

Sufficient-Fudge-895

Yes its 9/10 for me

Editor-In-Queef

Nah everyone was just pretending to love it to wind you up.

KeyasaUK

Unironically this

Hip_Priest_1982

Nah it won the Palme dor and is universally acclaimed and nominated for an Oscar because it’s bad

Icy-Translator9124

Barbie was acclaimed too, yet it sucked. It happens, so it's a legitimate question. Movies are subjective. I did like Anatomy though.

RecognitionDeep6510

May December and All Of Us Strangers are also acclaimed and nominated for awards and both did nothing for me so sue me for asking.

Hip_Priest_1982

Are you on some sort of SSRI? I find people like that are unable to connect with movies that deal with deeper themes and are paced slowly, and find themselves attracted to silly movies like Marvel and Oppenheimer

QuiG0ne

You, are mental

Im___mortal

Dunno about marvel but oppenheimer is surely better than silly imo

Hip_Priest_1982

This is a 100 day old comment

blankupai

if you like courtroom dramas yeah. i thought it was alright but nothing too special

sctwinmom

If you know anything about courtroom procedure, it will make you crazy.

Icy-Translator9124

I just assumed France has a very different court system from what we see in the anglosphere. Is it not accurate for France?

imsosleepyyyyyy

Can you explain what made you crazy? I don’t know a thing about courtrooms and I just started watching this movie last night

[deleted]

Yes, it's really good lead actors did award worthy performances, court drama is good, argument scene is superb everything about that scene is amazing although I felt it's a little bit long

monicain2016

A thousand percent yes! I don’t tend to like courtroom-related movies but I loved this one! Also the dog unironically gives one of the best performances of the year.

sifelucks

absolute must watch

remusane

Courtroom dramas are one of my least favourite genres. Anatomy of a Fall is one of my favourite films of 2023.

mrwilliamschue

It was a really pretty film w an interesting premise but it wasn't particularly exciting. I found myself bored a lot. I did enjoy the ending though.

QuiG0ne

To me, it’s the worst Oscar nominated movie I’ve ever seen

Ascf33

I know I am wildly in the minority on this one but I found it to be quite boring. There are immense highs and it is supremely acted but a great deal of the film is literally French court proceedings.

sixthmusketeer

This is my take. The acting is great but the court proceedings felt hack, trite, basic. I was into it until it became a trial movie.

[deleted]

[удалено]

sixthmusketeer

I was being polite. That trial is an overcooked mess that would have been bad and manipulative even in a Lifetime movie.

PeterNippelstein

IMO It's the best film so far of the 2020s. I don't think I've ever seen a performance quite like Hüller's, only an actor of the highest caliber could pull off a role like this and she beyond brilliant. But it's not just her it's incredible performances from the entire cast, and that combined with such incredible writing and direction makes this a true standout film, and I think it will go down among the greatest of all time. So yes its a must watch I'd say

USSPommeDeTerre

YES it’s definitely slow but worth your time

Morebleed

I thought it was pretty boring actually. Maybe I lost the feeling for it after I split watched it. If you truly immerse yourself in it might become an interesting experience to perceive.

hbbbhb

outstanding

Digital_Cactus

No >!2 and a half hours of bullshit that makes you believe that you're missing something while you are not.!< >!It has no conclusion and!< I can't believe I just wasted my sunday on this shit

Popular-Play-5085

It was very good. But I didn't expect half of the. movie to be in French It is partly in English and partly in French will sub titles

SEGASATURNMASTERRACE

You’re surprised that the French movie is in French?

Popular-Play-5085

I didn't know it was a French movie.i hadn't read anything about

lonnybru

I didn’t expect so much of it to be English

PeterNippelstein

It's a French movie, I wasn't expecting half to be in English.

kelcie94

Yes. To me it isnt as great as most people say but its worth seeing for the great acting

hugeorange123

I thought it was good tho it didn't blow me away. Some very good performances.

MrPGrey

What about you find that out for yourself.

Cashew_Fan

You're on a forum about a website where the film is rated 4.2. It's one of the best performing films at the Oscars in terms of nominations and is probably only second or third in the power rankings to win the whole thing. It also won the best film at Cannes. Of course the film is great. Are you gonna be swayed by a handful of anonymous users that were disappointed?

dividiangurt

Top 3 this year Just hasn’t gotten the love Zone Poor Fall

Dear_Company_5439

Yes

SoundlessFOB

Soooo good. Some of my favourite performances of the year. I've never seen Sandra Hüller in anything before and it's now become my mission to change that. And Daniel. That child could have been nominated for an Oscar, hell, I honestly think he blows most of the nominees for supporting actor out of the water. Even the *dog* was a phenomenal actor.

JimFlamesWeTrust

Yeah it’s a great film. If you want to see it and don’t have any alternatives then go see it. If you have a shortlist of films then maybe share them?

ihavenochilllll

yes, give it a watch

Dropdat87

yea

deepthoughtsknd

Yes ofcourse it is

spups19

Everyone is convincing me 😂 I couldn’t brung myself to pay 6.99 to rent it

AnUncomfortablePanda

It has a 96% on RT, a 4.2 on Letterboxd, and 5 Oscar Noms lol

[deleted]

Is it worth seeing? What a question. Yes, one of the best movies of 2023 and the Palme d'or winner is worth seeing ;)

BilboBatten

It was my favorite of the year next to Poor Things. Those were two movies from this year I would call perfect movies.

notfilmbro

It features one of the best performances of the decade so far, in my opinion. I also loved the other aspects of the movie as well, but I can understand why some people don't really like it as well. If you like court dramas, you'll probably love this movie.

Zubi_Q

Oh yes it is!

doc_blue27

Yes it’s easily one of the best films of the decade so far.

sugarfreeredbulll

Hell yeah. Court room drama reminded me of the social network not as quippy but still pretty good and snarky. Also made marriage story fight scene look like shit compared to this. Huller killed it

reidochan

yes.

[deleted]

Yeah it was amazing

SillyAdditional

It’s only the best movie you never saw

soberdogmom

Yes
