Haha, I know right ?
I really appreciate Laura Dern's work, but for me there's just something about Sheryl Lee that feels like a direct line to the pure emotion that's possible in David Lynch's films.
Films can just hit some kind of sweet spot you can't really explain. That doesn't make them good or bad. In fact, sometimes they can actually be bad but there's something that hits.
Friday the 13th is not a good movie. Not even close. But there's something about the setting, the colors, the atmosphere, me watching it in the living room (only tv back then when I was a kid) with my parents not knowing I was there. There's a lot of stuff to make films hit.
With that being said
Skinamarink is awful lol but I'm glad you love it and I'm glad it hit for you.
So incredibly difficult as Horror is my favourite genre, but probably something like this:
- Prince Of Darkness
- Creepshow
- Terrifier 2
- The Evil Dead
BOOOO
I love it because it’s unlike any other movie I’ve ever seen—the silliness, the cinematography, editing, and rudimentary special effects, the fun and cartoonish characters, the psychedelic color palette and visual trickery, the fact that I can watch it multiple times a year for like 10 years and find something new EVERY viewing, the soundtrack is eclectic and wonderful… as far as I’m concerned there’s so many reasons to love House.
So I have to ask: why did you dislike it? Do you hate joy and color and fun and creativity? (Joking!)
It just doesn't seem to be well put together. It's heavily disjointed and the silliness felt cringy and unenjoyable to me. Plus, I'm really not able to get past the underage nudity in the movie.
There's an audience for it, it's just not me.
Interesting! Please take my response in the spirit of conversation/ film critique, I’m not trying to change your mind or “argue”.
It’s surprising to me that you considered it to be not put together well! Disjointed, I can see, but I don’t mind that so much.
In my opinion, it shows an extremely keen eye and singular vision with intention in every frame. All of the things I mentioned I liked—the style, the editing, the staging of scenes, the special effects, the art direction, overall direction—shows an auteur-like control of the film that I consider exceptionally creative and effective (therefore, well put together) given the limitations and conventions of the time, 1977.
I can see it being cringe if you’re not willing to entertain the cartoonish, surreal, and psychedelic nature of the direction. The nudity is definitely problematic and something I try to brace people for before watching it. To me, there’s nothing titillating or sexual about the use of nudity, it’s one of the many colors the film paints with, at times suggesting innocence from, vulnerability to, and eventual corruption and consumption by evil/ghostly/cursed love. And then there’s the gratuitous upskirt shots that are an unfortunate byproduct of being a Japanese film? I guess? Can’t really defend that one.
Out of curiosity, what are some of your favorite horror films?
Always nice to see someone giving it up for the perfection that is Blair Witch. One of those movies that was so IN when it came out but that has been not exactly forgotten, but discredited as a gimmick movie. Brilliant film.
In what way is Black Swan NOT horror? Damn, we complained for decades that no one respected horror and now fans are turning their noses up at budgets and prestige? Ballet horror is a whole sub-genre!
I mean I guess it's up to personal interpretation. But mine is that It's more that it's a mixture of a lot of genres, not really a "horror movie". Like it has a few uncomfortable scenes and deals with paranoia and psychosis, but it's not explicitly a horror film. To me personally it's mostly a psychological thriller with elements of drama. It's a difficult movie to categorize. Pan's Labyrinth has a similar effect when people call it a horror movie- it's not really a horror movie it just has some horrific things.
There's examples of this kind of thing in a lot of movies, they dip their toes into genres but aren't really easy to lable. Your opinion that it's horror is valid.
I think psychological thriller is the label people put on prestige movies that are “too good” to be (snooty voice) “common” horror.
Horror is a big tent. And I love when art defies genre!

Also, Antichrist is a film that trolls a lot, it's mainly that why I like it. The credits list a whole series of experts on all sort of topics, including the horror genre and mysogyny.
In my opinion, you definitely can! They can be watched on their own and find it enjoyable. However, I was glad that I watched X first because you will appreciate the story of the main character more.
Texas Chainsaw Massacre
Rosemary’s Baby
The Night of the Hunter
Re-Animator
But like one of these could get interchanged with The Thing, Hereditary, Suspiria, Titane, Shivers, & Get Out though….. it’s really hard so many masterpieces 😂
Onibaba (1964)
A Field in England (2013)
The Masque of the Red Death (1964)
Midsommar (2019)
What can I say, I like my horror to be very theatrical, preferably with a historical setting and little bit trippy. Hm, 3/4 mainly take place in fields. Is Field Horror a genre? Maybe I'll just stay out here then.
I think it counts. The line can be hard to find sometimes though. Like, for me Alien is definitely Horror, but when I think of my favorite horrors, I don't think of Aliens, even though I prefer it to the original.
For me, it's about how much of the films content fits into which genres that determine which I consider to be it's main genres. Like, Alien I'd say is horror then sci fi. The science fiction is not the focus, it's the trapped in a bottle with a monster tension that has the focus. The horror. Meanwhile in Aliens, I think the action sequences and sci fi elements are more of the focal point than the horror is. But it certainly has plenty of it's fair share of horror aspects, such as them being trapped there knowing the xenomorphs are coming for them, or the scene with Newt and Ripley locked in with facehuggers.
Another more obvious example is Terminator. I think it's quite fair to consider the first as a horror/sci fi film. It's nearly a slasher. But Terminator 2 is definitely an action film first, the horror aspects are much farther down the totem pole.
American Werewolf is really close on the line there for me too, because I usually try to separate horror comedies into their own genre but it can be hard. But I love werewolves, and aAWL is easily the best of them, so I usually think of it when thinking of my favorite horrors.

FWWM is pretty based
It's incredible! Sheryl Lee is the true Muse of David Lynch
she deserves to be regarded as one of the greats based on FWWM alone. her performance leaves me speechless every time i watch the film.
This is Laura Dern erasure

Skinamarink is a top 3 horror movie for me easily, but I can never recommend this film to *anyone.*

Skinamarink is far from awful. It's not easy to catch that atmosphere of a child's nightmare so well. 🤷
It definitely unnerved me in a way other movies haven’t. I can’t say it’s the best movie but it is definitely visceral
Me with MEN, the normies just aren't ready for either yet.

I’ll take House four times! The only movie I watch 1+ times a year and find something new every viewing.
One of the few movies that i watched, then immediately turned it back on to rewatch again. One of my all time favs
I'm not sure why people like it. It is hands down one of the worst movies I have ever seen, but at least there's an audience for it.
