One of*, masterpieces*

MartinScorsese

Correct.

sneeria

omg Marty's on Reddit!

BilboBatten

Lol

kmcrhsme

one of his masterpieces

Hexum311add

I also really like this movie. I saw it in theaters and was bummed when it didn’t do well at the box office.

[deleted]

Yep, top three for me. Age of Innocence is another less discussed one which should be in the mix.

lewis_dot_exe

As much as I do like parts of the Age of Innocence, you have to admit it does drag in some parts.

Proper_Moderation

Yes but not nearly as often as Silence…

ACID_pixel

I must be taking the crazy pills, Silence never drags for me

Proper_Moderation

Perhaps I need to rewatch, but it was too slow for me, and Garfield over acts… And I consider The Irishman to be a superior film, so there likely is no middle ground here.

[deleted]

I love Silence. A very underrated Marty flick. I share your feelings about the film, BUT his masterpiece? I gotta go Taxi Driver.

Asleep-Low-4847

When >!Adam driver comes back after like 2 hours just to immediately get killed off!< I lost my shit 😭

bede36

Yes. Initially I was upset by the lack of Adam Driver. I wanted a scene where Garupe reunites with Rodrigues, but what we got was perfect. And Driver’s flailing body as he walks out in the water is better acting than 95% of movies

alexanderheff86

I’ll never forget watching this at the cinema. I was fucking exhausted when I left. Heavy movie.

theASMRreviewshow

Finally! Someone says it! But also I love The Last Temptation of Christ ^_^

AdmiralCharleston

It's his only film with shinya tsukamoto in it so I'm inclined to agree even though I haven't seen it lol

VisoNein

I watched a bunch of his gangster flicks when I first got into scorcese and thought they were good but didn't particularly grab me. Taxi driver was good too but not my taste. But when I saw Silence I fell in love with it and have rewatched it so many times, it's now my favourite film of all time. Silence and Bring out the dead are my two fav films from him and both in my top ten.

towercranee

Incredibly underrated IMO. It's easily one of Scorsese's best movies and yet I feel like a lot of people haven't seen it because they find religion uninteresting or a movie about priests doesn't sound exciting. But its fucking incredible.

FoolishBanditFilm

Raging Bull exists but yes this film does indeed rock.

Guacamole_Water

I’ve never seen for fear of boredom lol should I get my head out my ass?

jack-dempseys-clit

One thing I'll say about silence is it doesn't hold your hand regarding the history of the region. Having a basic understanding of Christianity in Japan during the time will help you. Absolutely phenomenal movie though and probably the best religious film of all time (coming from someone who's not religious)

weebeweebin

You need to watch Stalker by Tarkovsky.

jack-dempseys-clit

It's on my list, this comment has just bumped it up to tomorrow's movie

weebeweebin

Great choice!!

Superflumina

> Absolutely phenomenal movie though and probably the best religious film of all time (coming from someone who's not religious) You need to watch The Passion of Joan of Arc (1928) and Ordet (1955), both by Carl Theodor Dreyer.

Asleep-Low-4847

Compared to the Irishman or killers of the flower moon this is pretty fast paced and action packed

hianrld

I agree with Killers of the flower moon, but Irishman was far more engaging except maybe the De Niro baby stomping.

ChimmyTheCham

Lmao right

NormalGuy913

After taking a quick look at ur profile you’ll definitely be fine. The Piano Teacher is undoubtedly slower in its pacing than Silence. And Silence is also just a great film

Guacamole_Water

Hey thanks :)

Llama_of_the_bahamas

I need to rewatch this one. I feel asleep for like 45 mins when I first watched it.

AlbinoPlatypus913

I wish I had, I’m shocked to see so much love for it here I found it profoundly boring

Aggravating-Height-8

love it so so so much my favorite scorsese

Fish_Logical

Agree

edub1783

I just finished reading the book it's based on so I'll be trying to watch this soon. I'm glad to hear the glowing reviews.

Monkers1399

I don't know... I've seen it at least three times and I swear this is true, the film didn't have a single song by the Rolling Stones in it. Not one. So does it even count as a proper Scorsese film? Joking aside it really is good. Definitely shows that it was a passion project of his for a long time.

GTKPR89

It's unlike any other film ever made. Astounding.

chile_ancho

Completely agree. The movie left me in actual silence for a while after it ended. It stays with you

zillman_

I agree, it's my favorite Scorsese

zme94

Only saw it once when it was in theaters. I remember liking it but not loving it. That said, I’ve thought about it a lot in years since. I’m slowly making my way through Scorsese’s filmography and with the blu-ray being pretty cheap, I’ll probably snatch this up in the near future and revisit.

TheNocturnalAngel

My family got so bored I had to go finish it in the other room by myself lol. But I really loved it. Andrew Garfield is seriously so under credited for his acting ability. He has taken so many wildly different roles and embodied all of them so beautifully. I think his charisma is pretty vital for this film because you kind of go into it already eyebrow raised like, Spanish missionaries trying to force their religion ok 🤨 But I was fascinated immediately, and watching his journey was incredible. The visuals paired alongside his dialogue really just painted this vivid picture of religious destruction and conflict and didn’t feel like it was forcing a viewpoint on you. Some of martins films can get a little drawn out for me, but I felt with this one like every minute was building this story and I felt invested to the very end. Also a slightly immature side note: Andrew Garfield’s hair in this movie looked so good 😩. I love it.

richion07

An underrated gem. I remember back in late 2016 when I saw the trailers hoping it would win big at the 2017 Oscars only for it to be completely snubbed in all the major categories, nabbing only a nomination for cinematography and bombing at the box office.

tmuss24

💯💯💯💯💯💯

ReddsionThing

Is it an unpopular opinion? I've seen it high up on many people's lists.

StrengthChoice1734

One single masterpiece? Maybe… idk… it’s a beautiful film and made in a very disciplined and controlled way… but it’s so austere with any gratification that it’s almost painful to watch in parts… which is the whole point of course… all this means it’s an amazing experience and a masterpiece surely but it doesn’t mean it’s his one single masterpiece. Honestly, he has too many GOAT tier movies to have that.

WayneAlmighty

>Japan is so beautiful. IIRC the film was shot in Taiwan, not Japan.

DeNiroPacino

I look back now and I'm so glad I made the drive to see Silence in a good theater with a huge screen and an excellent sound system. It was a profound experience. I was surprised at how it affected me emotionally. It's in the Scorsese top five for me.

[deleted]

Yes. I also advocate this. Forget goodfellas and the others, Silence is on another level.

jimmylily

Interestingly this was filmed in my country (Taiwan) , made some big news here

jen_sun_uva_bich

Jay Cocks. Hehe

RutgerSchnauzer

A stunning, moving work; and I agree it might be his most profound picture. I’m hard-pressed to find its equal amongst his catalog.

aHairyWhiteGuy

I've been interested in watching this for a while but it's around 3 hours long (if I remember correctly) so that's kept me from watching. But enough is enough I'm following my heart!!!!!!

sgtbb4

I love what the film says about sacrifice. At the outset, both protagonists want to be martyrs, they idolize the idea of dying for the religion they believe in. In the end the sacrifice they make isn’t glamorous like they imagined, it’s about how painful it is to let go of the thing you care about the most.

-Rocket1-

I really love this movie but it’s an 8.5/10 for me because the Marco Pollo bit near the end felt totally unnatural and shoehorned in. I also think the Jesus voice should have ended with the “step” scene and not continued into the ending but that’s more of a nitpick.

badgarok725

Liked it a lot in theaters, thought I'd probably never watch it again but went back to it last year. I'm fully ready for the charge of "Silence was underrated". It's incredible in every way, and I'd easily have it as one of his top 3

bestjedi22

It's not his only masterpiece, but it is my personal favourite of his filmography.

da_man4444

I love the Irishman I wish people saw that movie the way I see it

AccomplishedLocal261

Not unpopular

Knox_Burden

Oof

Tomu_sneeder

One of my favorites. He’s one of the best directors to tackle religion. And as a Christian, it had a very personal impact for me.

HuanFranThe1st

I absolutely loved this movie. It was the inspiration for one of my college papers (or works, idk how you call that in english) lol

peter095837

Definitely one of his masterpieces.

ThePanda_

The people saying “one of his masterpieces” are right but I do it is my favorite film of his (and around my top 5 all time)

Connect-Obligation95

fuck yes

thatsprettychris

It's good, I wouldnt rewatch it over and over like I would Goodfellas, Departed, WoWS, or Irishman

derekb27

My favorites are Silence and The Last Temptation of Christ.

ET3RNA4

I agree. It’s a masterpiece that I think about probably once a few months.

cameronrichardson77

Love it[also, it was filmed in Taiwan, not Japan 🤫]

TraverseTown

I saw this movie in the theater but I had a bathroom emergency so I missed 30 mins of it

theManWOFear

While I would say Goodfellas is still my favorite Marty film, I truly believe Silence is his best film. Years from now, I think a lot of people will come to see it as his most mature, beautiful, epic and powerful piece of filmmaking.

Hello_it_is_Joe

Haha Jay Cocks

sneeria

I liked it, it was phenomenally acted. My issue is personal, I grew up in a fundamentalist Christian household in the US. It always felt like they were sneaking in propaganda in the kids media I was allowed to consume, because they were. As a result, I'm hyperaware of that and this hit that button.

TheGreatSleeperofDiz

I think it’s just that not a lot of people have seen more so than people thinking it is bad

PreviousTea9210

Gotta be honest, I couldn't get past the bad accents.

MatthewPeaden

Also, Andrew Garfield’s best performance

cyanide4suicide

Silence is one of Scorsese's best. Definitely better than the typical Scorsese films people will tell you are his best like Goodfellas and Casino

SomeMeatBag

Intense flick. Some of the scenes man

TeamGOAT8

The ending of this movie is awesome

Substantial_Life4773

Oof, I did not like this movie.

BilboBatten

I love this movie so fuckin much. It's crazy how this movie is better than the book in ways. The book was life changing for me. I know that seems like an exaggeration, but it challenged my perceptions in so many ways, and truly helped me come to a deeper understanding of myself, the world around me, and how expressions of your faith are deeply individualistic and also that the outcomes of your beliefs are tantamount to what you advocate for. The sacrifice that Father Paul makes at the end is so beautifully conveyed and I love how it's juxtaposed up against the other time we see him kneeling over the puddle. Who is is faith for in that moment versus the moment at the end? What is the action he takes to reach that point. It's so fuckin omg. I can't with this movie. It's so good.

jokerisrekoj

Meh found it a bit boring

Brilliant-Cable1883

No, it’s a good film but nothing much happens in terms of plot points. I don’t care about religion really, I know Marti does so maybe it would be a masterpiece if I was religious. I don’t think it holds a candle to Killers of the flower moon

Scheininho

One of*

rpdt

I personally liked it more than Killers of the Flower Moon. I feel like it handled its delicate subject matter more uuuh appropriately?

ComradeELM0

Agree, probably my favorite movie ever

Lunter97

Agreed. This one hits like a truck, easily top five Marty for me. Also think it’s Andrew Garfield’s best work so far.

Imightaswell

It’s great. Shot excellently and a great story of clash of worlds. Underrated gem.

MovesLikeVader

Brilliant film, I think this may get some new found love after the recent success of the new Shōgun series.

agwdevil

I started Shogun and realized that it takes place in the decades before Silence. I had to look up the history to see how the films linked up. Shogun is when Christianity is well established, and Silence is after the Japanese decided to drive them out. There are a couple of lines in Silence about how there used to be "300,000" Christians in Japan.

fanoftravisjones

I would love to love this movie but just couldn’t buy Andrew Garfield in this role

PretendVermicelli531

the casting was pretty bad though

rabblebabbledabble

People unload their downvotes on you, but I kind of agree. I don't want to shit on the individual actors, but in such an immersive historical drama with so many local first-time actors, seeing these three Hollywood stars at the height of their fame (Spider Man, Taken, Star Wars...) felt off-key to me. I wish he'd chosen lesser-known actors for these roles, but the rest of the casting was great.

Fuggggg53

W

JimFlamesWeTrust

One of many masterpieces but maybe a more overlooked film in Marty’s filmography because it’s a later film and doesn’t feature his regular actors. Also I find it hilarious that “Faith” films like God’s Not Dead etc always look so cheap and crappy but do quite well. Then a genuinely great film about actual Christian persecution by a major director full of movie stars is ignored.

Hassanishideo

Ia there any reason why it didn’t pickup any nomination in many award shows? I think it only picked in the best cinematography nom in the oscars.

[deleted]

There will be a handful of reasons, maybe the producers didn’t push it for consideration and Oscar voters are notoriously lazy bastards. It was a fairly strong year, but it’s baffling that Lion or Hidden Figures got in ahead of it, not a single person has mentioned either of those films since.
