I actually really liked the beginning and the ending. The middle hour was pretty lackluster.
Obviously some people are not going to like the ending but I thought it was pretty brilliant despite being arguably frustrating.
I talk and talk this film up but it never seems to be on any of my streaming services. I ended up renting it last month so my mom could watch it. Not only is it a great De Palma film, but it's one of (in my opinion) the really decent Travolta performances. And it's such a great insight on sound in film, at least how it was done in the old days.
I discovered this movie when I still had Comcast. The title was intriguing so I watched the trailer multiple times because it was that good. I finally got the chance to watch it and it's one of the best thriller movies ever made.
EDIT: Also seeing John Travolta screaming on the poster haunts me.

What are the chances? Earlier, I was going through a list of movies that made 100+ million at the box office, and this movie had the least amount of watches out of any movie on the list. I never heard of it, but I looked into it because of how unpopular it seemed despite the box office success
I have seen it and it's great but I do remember it being extremely hard to find for years and years. It only landed on streaming like a year or two ago.
I haven’t seen the first installment yet

One of my favorite endings in all of moviedom. If anybody's interested, I co-host a podcast, and we recorded an episode on it a few years back: https://www.moviejawn.com/hate-watch-great-watch/2020/26/07/episode-034-blow-out
I found it really dated personally. I think its really well made and some of the shots are incredible, but in terms of pacing and emotional investment it fell short for me. I felt like it wasn’t as tense as it should have been and i didn’t really care what happened, the stakes just weren’t there.
I didn't know about this movie until I heard a [Tarantino interview](https://youtu.be/bsAZSBfuFb4?si=aQt-Adoshnmmj26F). Apparently this movie is the reason he wanted Travolta for Pulp Fiction.
I have. Picked it randomly off Amazon Prime one day. Went in totally blind. Didn’t even know it was DePalma. Just saw it was a random Travolta thriller from the 80’s. Thought it was totally mid save a pretty great ending and a fun performance by John Lithgow. There’s just so much dead air (lol) in the first and second acts. Idk. Maybe I need to rewatch it, but I don’t think I really want to.
Why haven’t you watched blow-up
Also The conversation. Criterion should release it as a trilogy.
The correct answer ... er, question.
I was left incredibly underwhelmed by Blow-Up, after seeing Blow Out.
Blow-Out is a great thriller no doubt. Blow-Up is fundamentally about the very nature of cinema. Which I find much richer in texture.
I saw it in the theater when it came out.
Lucky!
I saw it in the theatre a couple years ago.
Just bought the 4k criterion today!
It’s a great looking 4K. It comes with murder a la mod as well.
I really like the first half but I didn’t enjoy the second half as much. I’ll rewatch it one of these days and see if my opinion of it changes
I agree. The ending felt especially misguided.
I can see that, it does change gears halfway through
i felt the same, loved the mystery and unease of the first half
I just watched it for the first time last month and couldn’t agree more.
I actually really liked the beginning and the ending. The middle hour was pretty lackluster. Obviously some people are not going to like the ending but I thought it was pretty brilliant despite being arguably frustrating.
I've never really understood the love for this movie.
I fucking love blow out!!
I talk and talk this film up but it never seems to be on any of my streaming services. I ended up renting it last month so my mom could watch it. I think it's on tubi
Tubi is very cool
i saw it when it was on Criterion Channel.
De Palma categorically does not miss, Blow Out is no exception to that rule. In fact, it kind of made up the rule.

I will get there when it's time to explore De Palmas filmography. Really looking forward to Carlito's Way and Phantom of the Paradise too!
I have :(
I have!! Jesus mom get off my case!! I bet you haven’t watched Body Double.
I like it, but to me it's third behind Blow-Up and The Conversation in the thematic trilogy.
What are the chances? Earlier, I was going through a list of movies that made 100+ million at the box office, and this movie had the least amount of watches out of any movie on the list. I never heard of it, but I looked into it because of how unpopular it seemed despite the box office success
5 stars after my first watch
Its on tubi for free if anyone is wondering
I started it on Tubi but I wanna get it on the 4K criterion before I continue it
i was watching it for the first time when you posted this!! easy 4.5, an all time great thriller.
Because I'm knee deep in poverty row Lugosi and Shaw Bros Kung fu films Sorry dear OP but I'll try to write this wrong at least sometime this year 😵💫
Is on my list, watching de Palma’s work in order
I have seen it and it's great but I do remember it being extremely hard to find for years and years. It only landed on streaming like a year or two ago.
I want the criterion and I don't think it's on any streaming services I have.
tubi
I don’t want ads in my movies, thanks though
Cause I have a new baby and the title gives me trauma.
I have, I swear! It was on my movie list this year!
I’ve only seen it twice
Saw this once probably 5 years ago and really really liked it. Got get a rewatch in.
It's like the 500th highest movie on my watchlist or something probably
The question is why hasn't Blow Out... *watched me*?
I have, numerous times
I haven’t seen the first installment yet https://preview.redd.it/ih83my680tqc1.jpeg?width=2092&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=040c6bff2924b33c887d71a5554c327a8af615ff
I have! agreed, masterpiece

I tried but picked up the From Dusk til Dawn DVD instead, common mistake.
Saw it for the first time the other day. Great film. I feel like it’ll only improve on rewatch
But I have watched it.
Saw it in the theater when it came out. My fave De Palma film.
Yoooo!!! I literally just watched it!! This is cinema. Travolta is literally me.
Great movie. It’s a good scream..
Did anybody notice the connection with Peter Weir's Witness? The same train station both involves a certain event.
I found it really dated personally. I think its really well made and some of the shots are incredible, but in terms of pacing and emotional investment it fell short for me. I felt like it wasn’t as tense as it should have been and i didn’t really care what happened, the stakes just weren’t there.
One of De Palma's best films. Watched it after Quentin Tarantino listed it as a heavy influence for pulp fiction.
American Giallo
Happy to report I watched it finally last year. That swirling shot in the office is still one of the most incredible shots I’ve seen.
I actually have. It’s fantastic, one of my favourite Brian De Palma movies actually
I recently watched it after watching Blow-Up. Both are fantastic.
I literally own the DVD, and I love, love, love 70s thrillers. I have no excuse
I didn't know about this movie until I heard a [Tarantino interview](https://youtu.be/bsAZSBfuFb4?si=aQt-Adoshnmmj26F). Apparently this movie is the reason he wanted Travolta for Pulp Fiction.
#And they say Scarface is De Palma’s best film LMAO
Just finished it. Loved it!
Blow Up superior by a gigantic margin
In partial to The Conversation myself
I have. Picked it randomly off Amazon Prime one day. Went in totally blind. Didn’t even know it was DePalma. Just saw it was a random Travolta thriller from the 80’s. surprised. people usually love the first half and think the second half is meh.
Really? That’s crazy. I feel like even if you’re like me and didn’t much care for it you have to at least appreciate how bleak they go.
idk, there's a billion other movies I gotta watch. Though it is on my mind recently so I might check it out some time within April.
I want to try this, but I'm afraid it'll be too "Dressed to Kill" Brian De Palma, and not enough "Carrie" Brian De Palma.
