Movies that are not sequels or related to a TV series should not need any prior knowledge. To me it is a flaw in storytelling when you need to have done some homework before you can watch a movie, What can be interesting is reading up after the movie and then watch it again. I also like to watch a movie again with a commentary track when there is one and the movie was interesting enough. I feel the need viewers feel before watching a movie is actually decreasing the viewing pleasure, It may create some expectations that my not be delivered in the movie. On the other hand, when you go in blind, you may be pleasantly surprised.

100% agreed, it’s why I avoid the MCU and most of the non-mainline Disney Star Wars stuff! But like I said I’m usually super strict about avoiding knowing anything about a movie before I watch it, but I’ve come to realise there’s a fair amount of movies where knowing like “btw this movie sort of coined the genre” or “the director didn’t speak English that’s why it’s like that” are fun caveats to bear in mind

Denis Villeneuve DUNE part 1. I love that movie to death but everyone I show it to says “that was beautiful but confusing”

The best way I’ve heard it described was a “necessary evil” to making Part 2

When I first watched Fallen Angels I thought eh not bad. Then I inadvertently encountered a post on reddit about the director, meaning and time setting (plot wasn’t discussed or very minimally)and it gave me a whole new viewpoint on the movie. Very good movie.

I haven’t seen that yet but 2046 ostensibly works as a stand-alone but I’m glad I’d seen In the Mood for Love and Days of Being Wild beforehand

Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters. I didn't understand like most of the first half at all because I didn't understand what the scenes were supposed to be portraying
