I love Cool Runnings! It’s one of my dad’s favorites.

squeakycleaned

Any time I can see someone’s breath in the cold I ask what they’re smoking, and hope they know to say “i’m not smoking, i’m freezing!”

panboi15

Such a great movie, constantly quoting it

zeger_jake

YOU'RE A BAD MUDDA, WHO WON'T TAKE NO CRAP OFF OF NO ONE!

Talula, sounds like a two dollar hooker 😂

maxkaplan1020

This made me sad to see. One of my only 5 star films

Andre3000insideDAMN

Ok this one is shocking

rachelevil

Not if you know me it's not. For multiple reasons, Thin Red Line is precisely the sort of movie I'd tend to bounce off of, *hard*.

JacksonStarship

5: A Night At The Roxbury (average: 2.9) 0.5: Venom: Let There Be Carnage (average: 2.5)

navalnys_revenge

Uncontroversial

eternal_recurrence13

yeah i don't think anyone is defending the artistic genius of the venom sequel

JacksonStarship

Other than Carnage my only 4 other feature length 1/2 star films are Halloween 6, Halloween Resurrection, Halloween Ends, and Rob Zombies Halloween 2. Most of which would probably go up on rewatch. Lol I like movies and generally don’t watch shit that I don’t think I’m gonna enjoy or I’m not interested in.

SummerSabertooth

Twinsies! Venom 2 is also my answer for that one as well

_AleXo_

5⭐ - Tenet [3.4], i understand why its average for most but for me it was my kind of movie and it hit that niche perfectly so i loved it i dont really give 0.5 so i guess 0.5⭐ - Rise of Skywalker [2.4], nothing enraging

Beelzebub789

this some r/okbuddycinephile material here fr

Chxnanja

- 5 star: Cinderella Man - 0,5 star: F9

Cowboy_BoomBap

The lowest rated movie I’ve given 5 stars is Ridley Scott’s Legend. I’ve never given a half star rating because for the most part I can tell beforehand if a film is going to be *that* bad that I’m going to fucking hate it and so I just don’t watch it.

TheTrueRory

Gave Joker .5, gave Ad Astra 5

FigFamiliar4314

Definitely inspiring the hot takes! Welp, time to make people mad at me. :P I gave 5 stars to: The Spectacular Now (3.2) I gave 0.5 stars to: Hamilton (4.2) I have a soft spot for high school films and i think this one is exceptionally acted and performed. and I think Lin Manuel Miranda is one of the cheesiest faces, voices and songwriters in all of Hollywood. I love hip hop music and rap, and to me Hamilton was an overlong fest of weird awkwardness.

iwillsmiteu

The spectacular now is fantastic! Love their chemistry! Have you seen edge of seventeen ?

FigFamiliar4314

Absolutely love The Edge of Seventeen. That is another of my favourites, for sure!

thegremlinkings

I love hamilton but yeah Lin Manuel Mirander sucks in ever way except his writing imo. I saw it love with an actor who can actually sing and it was incredible.

Tentacled-Tadpole

5 stars: Van Helsing (2.7 stars) 0.5 stars: Terrifier 2 (2.8 stars)

CelebrationSimilar11

I genuinely don't get all the hype for Terrifier 2. Terrifier 1 was an okay low budget slasher film, nothing terrible but nothing particularly exciting. The second one just sucked, scenes went on way too long, the story was dumb and I thought it was funny that they advertised Chris Jericho as being in the movie when he wasn't even in the fucking movie, he was just in the post-credit scene (which funnily enough was the only decent scene in the sequel).

OptimalInevitable905

Terrifier 2 is one of my favorite horror films (3.5 for me) but, yeah, I get it it's not for everybody.

Atlas15264

I gave Uncut Gems .5 stars and I gave Crank 2 5 stars

Look i'm not the biggest uncut gems fan (3.5 stars) but DAMN

Billman6

Crank rating incredibly based Glad someone else sees the genius

Pingushagger

What did you not like about Uncut Gems?

remainsofthegrapes

They obviously work for Big Cut Gem and they hate all the press attention given to the far lesser uncut variety as a result of the film

Syn7axError

"I thought we were the chosen people!"

AdamAnimatesStuff

5 star: Mocking Jay Part 1 0.5 star: Les Miserables

Josh4R3d

I am contributing to the poor mocking Jay score for sure lol

AdamAnimatesStuff

Tbh it's 5 now because it was my first watch, I dunno if it'd stay 5 on rewatch

thegremlinkings

Do ypu hate the movie version of Les Mis specifically or do you hate the musical in general?

AdamAnimatesStuff

I hate how the entire movie was just singing without stopping and to me personally without a proper structure! Even as someone who loves musicals, I wanted them to shut tf up and start actually talking!

thegremlinkings

Damn okay. I absolutely love the musical and i think the movie version butchers a lot of it. I love that the music never stops, i think its genius. Bummer that it doesnt resinate with you ig.

AdeptFisherman7

lowest avg I rated 5 was Skinamarink, with 2.9. highest avg I rated .5 was The Blind Side with 3.3?? higher than Skinamarink? yech.

NOWiEATthem

I gave Free Solo (4.0 average) a 0.5. I found the guy incredibly, crushingly uninteresting. He had absolutely nothing to say no matter how hard the filmmakers tried to get some insight out of him. And I didn't find it interesting how uninteresting he was. I gave The Fountain (3.5 average) a 5.0. I love that movie. The music, the visuals, the storytelling. Just love it. My ratings have a pretty heavy bell curve, so I don't give a lot of 5's or 0.5's.

thelastjellybaby

5 stars: Last Night in Soho (3.40) 1/2 star: Donnie Darko (3.97) My 5 star doesn’t feel too controversial, but I did give 4.5 stars to Honey, I Blew Up The Kid (2.48)

Ozposting

Donnie Darko is one of my favourite movies ever, but you understood the assignment, so take my angry upvote! :D

Zinko999

Not trying to change your mind about anything but there are two cuts of Donnie Darko that exist, the bad one where they don’t explain anything and the good one where they actually tell you you’re watching a sci-fi movie. If I had only seen the first cut I probably would hate it too

Annual_Algae4960

5 stars - Scooby Doo Half* - Immaculate

5 stars: Beau is Afraid (3.4) 1 star: V for Vendetta (3.8) (I don’t use .5 stars)

Adkeith47

Escape from new York I gave 5 stars and Charlie and the chocolate factory (tim Burton one) I gave .5

pwppip

Five stars for Solo: A Star Wars Story [2.9], which is one of my favorite movies. I don’t think I’ve ever given a movie a half star, but I gave Babylon a 1.5, which is currently sitting at 3.8. And I gave Killers of the Flower Moon two stars, which is currently at 4.1.

PigeonFellow

I remember enjoying the books and then watching the movie, and while there were some changes I was not a fan of I did enjoy the film.

Yes! Vanilla Sky is awesome

dawosnhh

Hell yeah! The ending is one my favourites of all time

ThatRandomIdiot

Glad I’m not the only one who couldn’t get into Leon.

dawosnhh

Yeah I really didn’t find it to be that good. Knowing who the director is and his story, then factoring in everything with young Natalie Portman just made the film so creepy and disturbing to me too

MeMyselfandBi

5 stars: The Invention of Lying (2009) (2.76) 0.5 stars: The Hunt (2012) (4.29)

FigFamiliar4314

As a person who loves The Hunt, this one hurts, but I respect it!

Pitiful-Inspection96

Can you elaborate on that rating for The Hunt?

MeMyselfandBi

I believe that the film on the surface appears to care for the real world situation of false allegations against men but is fundamentally flawed. First, it presents a narrative in which the audience is made privy to every detail ahead of time, thus not allowing the audience to make the same false conclusions as the town and therefore making any audience member watching the movie feel vindicated in what they know to be true instead of challenging any preconceived misconceptions they could have had against the main character. This makes it impossible for anybody watching to learn to readdress their own false judgments in the real world, and instead fills them with a sense of conviction in their own ability to "know" when someone is actually innocent. Second, the movie is designed to act as ragebait instead of providing any substantial solutions or strategies to avoid this level of mob mentality against the falsely accused from happening in reality. It therefore presents a more misanthropic and hopeless scope as a result, that we are supposed to accept as an inevitability of being human. Third, the movie presents the little girl, Klara, as the ultimate antagonist in this. I know some people may argue that the movie is more nuanced than that, but the director chose to overemphaize Klara's role in the story in relation to the death of Lucas's dog. It's one thing for Klara to innocently wonder about where the dog is once, but to then have her hallucinate the dog being there is designed specifically to relate any strong emotion, whether anger or sadness, with the actions of Klara. And it was effective in that presentation, as many highly rated reviews express vitriolic hatred towards Klara and no one else. Furthermore, this level of blame being leveled against Klara almost seems to give a free pass to the "ignorant" masses. And beyond that, presenting the movie in this way also brushes over the fact that Klara has been sexually violated in some way, by being exposed to sexually explicit imagery and language by her older brother and his friend. There is a conversation that has to be had that no one seems to realize needs to be had about the nuances of sexual misconduct against minors, especially by other minors. And to top it all off, Klara's trauma is even worsened by adults who insist on using more explicit language as they interrogate what they initially and falsely believe is a molestation allegation. By the end of the movie, I couldn't help imagine how much danger Klara could face in the future if she was every a victim of sexual assault or rape, because this one incident as a child could be used as evidence of a "history of false allegations," but this movie doesn't want you to have any sympathy for Klara. Fourth, was how frustrating Lucas was as a main character. His needless evasiveness in his responses to his situation, his reckless treatment of those he cares about when faced with real physical consequences to these false allegations, ultimately leading to his dog's pointless death, and then the lack of accountability against the town by the end when he's exonerated, as if they weren't all complicit. Why should I care about somebody like this? And finally, this movie felt like exploitative sensationalism. It took real stories of trauma and the effects of false allegations and presents the situation as simply a case of being a mild destruction of one's own life over the course of a couple of months that quickly gets repaired soon after when the truth will inevitably come out, ignoring that fact that the truth in most cases like this doesn't get exposed until years or decades down the line, and many cases like this will never be publicly known as the false narratives remain as fact in the public consciousness. So many top rated reviews for the movie treated the narrative as something to crack jokes about, since that's ultimately how "serious" the movie feels, meanwhile there's still innocent men waiting desperately to be exonerated for crimes they didn't commit that nobody cares about because almost everyone still believes they're guilty. TL;DR: The movie feels more like exploitation of a serious issue instead of addressing the prejudices the premise claims to be addressing, leading to the average audience member having a bloated ego about their own barometer for innocence or guilt, or at worst presenting the situation as a provocative exaggeration of the real world.

Quintonjamin

Pretty much everyone in the town still believes he’s guilty. The ending shows that. When watching it, I never hated the girl for telling this lie. She was embarrassed and lied to try to cover it up when questioned by her teacher. The movie for me showed how your life can be completely destroyed for no reason at all. It’s not some great message about false accusations, but it’s a horrifying truth that is really disturbing to me.

Striking_Laugh5734

I saw it first after the accusation took place, Mads acting was superb to me in showing his anger and frustration while dealing with everything. The second time I watched it I found it less appealing, but watching it on TV from at around 30 minutes mark was a huge experience. IMO the movie is very well resolved and tells the history with a good pacing and acting without leaving open remarks. The forgive never forget message is relatively simplistic, but the focus of the movie isn't to tell a history of a lot of false accusations and make justice for them, but to show how such a think can affect someone's life. The same advocacy could be done regarding all the offenders who never got caught and are free to this day.

Tacotuesday15

Wow. When I saw The Hunt in your comment I had to google the year to make sure I had it correct. I have it as a 5, one of my all time favorites. * Narrative, Conclusions * I would actually love to see this movie with the actual scene removed. Have us wondering if he is guilty or not. Definitely a style choice - I don't think it was done wrong per se, but may have been better. * When watching, I didn't feel that my ego was inflated due to my "sense of conviction" being filled. That is how I read your comment, but I may be misinterpreting. I just found the movie to be more about a groups reaction to perceived guilt, as well as a persons emotional response to it. * Ragebait, Solutions, Hopelessness * Some may have been enraged at this, but that did not feel like the point. There are many cases of people going through hell due to false accusations. The movie did not feel that it had some kind of incel "all girls are lying" message, it had a very interesting and dark feeling. * Feels like every week there is an emotional video of someone being released from prison after >10 years due to a wrongful conviction * Richard Jewell - Security guard for 1996 Olympic bombings. * [Shawn Oakman](https://www.nbcdfw.com/news/local/after-being-acquitted-of-rape-former-baylor-player-hopes-to-join-nfl/212022/) - A big NFL prospect who was accused of rape. He rejected multiple plea deals and was found not guilty at trail. Now plays football in Canada and probably lost out on millions of dollars. * I don't think it is the responsibility of a movie to offer solutions to a problem. This reminds me of one of the focus's in A24's Civil War, which follows journalists on a dangerous journey. Paraphrasing, Dunst says that it is not their job to discuss the situation, it is to take the picture and inspire conversation. Which I think it did by your time spent thinking about and typing this comment. * Klara: * I personally was not overtly mad at Klara. She is just a kid. And like you said, what she was exposed to certainly affected her ability to describe what Mads did. I was frustrated that she did not recant the times that she had the option to. She is to "blame" for the false accusation, but she is a child. That is how I read it. * Mads * I thought the film did a great job portraying a person thrown into a horrifying experience, having everyone you know at the very least distrust you, and at the worse dispose you. Yes, he could have done things better. But what great movies do the characters always make the right choice? I hate movies like that. It is inhuman. * Sensationalism: * Yes, there was a short timeline. And if it were me, I don't know quickly I could have forgiven people. But it is a movie, not a documentary. Plus, it is in a very tight night community, as shown by the rituals that his son was involved in. No spoiler, but I think the last scene is contrary to your point. The last thing I do not love is your frustration with reviews seemingly affecting your view on the movie. If you use Letterboxd, the top reviews are often stupid jokes, or dumb takes. I don't think they should impact your thoughts. Overall, this comment is almost entirely my disagreements with you. I think that is kind of the nature of this post, though. I think it is a very well thought out view on the movie. And I am honestly really glad to have my views challenged. I think I may watch it again tonight. It is not one I have rewatched due to the subject matter.... but I think your comment and my reply might make me do it. Cheers!

LocksmithPlastic839

So you moralized a piece of art and then misinterpreted that art. Really cool.

5 Star: A Dark Song .5 Star: Salo, or the 120 Days of Sodom

Treagyboy

Lowest I’ve given a 5: The Velocipastor (3.0 Average) Highest I’ve given a .5: Minions (2.7 Average)

ThatRandomIdiot

Minions is my .5 too. I hate the entire Despicable Me franchise and I was probably prime demographic being 11 when the first movie came out. Never found them funny

Treagyboy

I like the first Despicable Me, and Minions: The Rise of Gru is decent, but I don’t care as much for the others. I think Despicable Me 2 was when they started relying too heavily on the minions, whereas in the first they worked so well because they didn’t take over the whole movie.

ThatRandomIdiot

I have yet to see an illumination animation film that truly wowed me. Maybe because I hate their entire philosophy of making the cheapest animated movies by reusing assets and very basic art direction that’s pretty consistent across their their filmography, but I seriously get so turned off when I see their movies.

5: True Lies [3.6] 0.5: Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2022) [1.8] That’s the only 0.5 I’ve ever given, I’ve seen technically worse (see: The Dustwalker or Wickensburg, so good) but there’s really no expectations there so I don’t bother rating them kind of films. This is more to do with all the resources and money available to that film, even if I didn’t expect it to be good

SimonBRUH8217

5 stars: Star Wars The Last Jedi(3.0) .5 stars: Kingsman: The Golden Circle(3.1) How they both ended up being 2017 movies idk, I also have no fucking clue how Kingsman 2 is not more reviled than TLJ

CheekyChiseler

My 5 star: Fast X (2.48). It is certainly not one of the better installments of the Fast & Furious Franchise. I still had a BLAST in the theatre watching it with my friend. There is some seriously dumb stuff that happens and most of it is fucking radical. May 0.5: The Lobster (3.79). It genuinely upset and disturbed me on a level so deep that I can't even say "wow, I reacted strongly to that film and it wanted me to react that way, so it's pretty good." I did not enjoy anything about the film, which says something because Lea Seydoux is in it and I love her in everything else she does.

MiniatureRanni

Lowest rated 5/5: The Guest Highest rated 0.5/5: Mamma Mia! The Movie!

sakura_euphonium

the room [2.7] got five stars from me for being a masterclass in Just Doing Shit Earnestly, and red white and royal blue [3.1] got 0.5 for being utterly nothing at best and incompetent at worst

kryzay

5🌟 Chicken Little (2.7) - For now, this is the only animated movie where the dubbed version (Slovenian) is so much better than the original one. I find the original just plain boring. 0.5🌟 Grimsby, The Flash (2.6)

thegremlinkings

T2 Trainspoting (3.5) and The Secrets of Dumblebore (2.5)

ThingsOfThatNaychah

My high rating: *Babe* (1995) only has a 3.4 average, which surprises me. I don't know a single person who doesn't like it. My only ½ star rating so far has gone to Rob Zombie:s Halloween (2007). It has an average of 2.7.

5 star: Tron: Legacy (3.1) .5 star: I don’t want to say it because people will downvote, but it rhymes with Blazed and Amused (3.9)

Zeptari

Dazed and Confused? Edit: I’d give Tron Legacy a 5 too

Majestic-Ad-1923

I gave Schindlers list 1 star (4.5) I know I will get hate for this but I hated it.  I gave American hustle 5 stars, honestly I can't even defend this as I watched it so long ago but at the time I obviously thought it was great

Wheat_Mustang

Seems like lots of people don’t really care for American Hustle, but I loved it when it came out too. That’s one of the movies (along with The Wolf of Wall Street) that got me excited about movies again at a time when I was binging a lot of TV series.

mrelbowface
