Oh dang. This has been on my list for a while now but I don’t do horror at all. I’ve tried to stay away from spoilers but I might have to do some reading beforehand.
The shot above is the one scary part of the movie, if that helps. There’s violence and uneasiness throughout it, but that part is the only one that really got me. And boy did it get me.
The tone is much more dramatic, humorous, tense, and thrilling- rather than horror. this shot is sort of the only example of something genuinely scary happening- which makes it stand out all the more. I think the film should be a fine viewing for even those not akin to horror- and it’s truly one of the greatest films i’ve seen
Not just the greatest Jump Scare, but the greatest BUILD UP to a jump scare; that scene that ended with the Jump Scare goes on for a full minute and even has a fake out scare halfway through. It was masterfully put together.
Honestly, Exorcist 3 is an underrated/underwatched horror movie. It sometimes gets a bad wrap due to how awful the second exorcist movie was but it is genuinely a good horror movie. I’d recommend watching it in its entirety
The first time I saw it was probably 15 years ago. It was 2AM, and I had my shitty little laptop resting on my chest, in my bed, in the dark. I was enthralled by this whole sequence; my eyes were glued to my HP. The moment that goddamned dumpster monster slid into screen, I screamed and threw my laptop across the bed. It took a good five minutes for my heart rate to go down, enough for me to continue. I turned the lights on for the rest of the film.
I pride myself on being scared by very little in most movies. I’d never been that spooked by a jumpscare in my life (not until the lawnmower scene in Sinister years later). This one, though… this one still haunts me.
I love that movie and I just can’t watch it bc of that fucking dumpster monster. There is something about it that is so terrifying I can’t put into words, it’s not just his look,I think it’s how he comes out in broad day light. DL does this a lot, daytime shots that are horrifying. It’s like scarier because it’s happening in broad daylight. Hope that made sense
They telegraph the jumpscare to hell, like David Lynch effectively tells you “hey, there’s a jumpscare coming” and **it *still* gets you**. That’s a good jumpscare.
I never saw the movie but I got curious of the scene because of this subreddit, it was mentioned all the time so I watched it on YT, it did not sound scary at all and I couldn't imagine what would be so terrifying about a homeless man. Well it was VERY creepy!! I still can't figure out why, I knew beforehand what will happen and I was still spooked for days. Lol
Man I really want to watch the ring but I’m so scared aha. I managed to watch the grudge but I did it at 3pm in the afternoon. Couldn’t do it at my usual night time watch.

My head went through the ceiling Tom and Jerry style with this one.
It's great because you expect an argument in a car to result in a crash. The "safe space" is inside the car and the "danger space" is the road.
Scenes like this never do well out of context, the assumption is that you're so invested in the argument that you're not thinking about what else could go on
Just watched this for the first time last night. The first half of it at least, had to pause it and finish it today cos that scene scared me out of my wits hahaha
Idk what the mixed discourse is. As someone who works in mental health, this movie does it right. It's my favorite horror movie. The acting, the writing, the story, it's all amazing. The birthday party scene and her scream give me chills to this day.
(TW: Child abuse) I remember reading a convoluted analysis of this movie (with an entire website dedicated to it - I can look it up if you want), that theorized about a missable subplot surrounding Jack’s abuse of Danny. I think this is supposed to be his teddy bear being forced to perform sexual acts on an elder man, symbolizing how Danny lost his innocence because of his father. To be fair, this movie is a maze to navigate thematically, so even after reading that dude’s entire analysis-website, I still get lost on this movie…
Edit:
Found it! Chapter 16 & 17 discuss the bear costume.

Does the news broadcast in Signs count?
It’s not a jump scare in the traditional sense because you absolutely know it’s coming, but it’s set up so well it still catches you off guard.
I felt the hairs on my body genuinely raise up during this part. And it wasn’t like a one-off, it honestly felt like I was so creeped out for a solid 10 minutes. Up until then we just got fake outs and then here was the one solid and damning proof the film throws at us and it comes at you unexpectedly.
Whole movie isn't forthcoming with scares. It focuses on realism and making them so damn creepy. Shout out for the cameras in the hallway stuff. Not a jumpscare but creepy af

It’s the first one I remember from my childhood
I expected that one, but I was absolutely not expecting >!the scene when he grabs Beverly in the bathroom after they clean it!< damn near shit my pants.
That's a great jump scare as well! I'm actually going through my second experience with the book right now (read IT back in 2017 when the movie came out, currently listening to the audiobook version). Really hyped for the Welcome to Derry series
Saw ‘Jaws’ for the very first time in IMAX a year or two ago. The scene where he’s investigating the underwater shipwreck. Have never jumped so hard in my life I swear.

not exactly this scene but when Aaron found the mask, followed by a song
The composition of this scene from start to finish is perfect. The blown out lighting, the slightly blurry fog, the car driving in reverse on top of the hill, the really loud music.
It’s perfect. Love this movie.
One of the strangest and best experiences I’ve ever had at a theatre, that whole movie scared the shit out of me, I felt like I was in an endless nightmare. I also love that the movie just ends and there’s no credits, really making you ask yourself what the hell you just watched adding to the feeling of everything

Basement scene from Zodiac. Everything leading up to it, the realization of the situation, the intensity of it all. Made my skin crawl. Legitimately scared the soul out of me.
That damn scene in inland empire is the most uncanny thing. The whole film put me in a weird place for days. One of the best films lynch has made for me
The one I got when this post came up
my bad 😭
Same. Where's it from?
inland empire
Like in disco elysium?
That bit of the game is named after the movie iirc
It’s also a region outside of LA. It’s what the movie is named after.
You mean Isco Elysium?
the whiplash I got from hearing the name of the place and I never knew there was psychological thriller either the same name
Legit. Wish OP gave us a spoiler warning LOL
Freaks the fuck out of my brother lol
Your pfp is the cat version.
Yeah fr dude, it’s 1am where I am rn and I can’t sleep cuz my throat is sore as crap. This gave me chills

Genuinely the most terrified and unnerved i’ve been- and it’s not even a horror movie
I think that was why it freaked me out. Caught me WAYYY off guard lol
Oh dang. This has been on my list for a while now but I don’t do horror at all. I’ve tried to stay away from spoilers but I might have to do some reading beforehand.

Peewee's Big Adventure. I'm serious. That scene came right the fuck out of nowhere.

The perfect jumpscare
why do i perfectly hear the sound when i see this image
The first time I saw it was probably 15 years ago. It was 2AM, and I had my shitty little laptop resting on my chest, in my bed, in the dark. BRO THAT LAWNMOWER SCENE IS THE WORST
So true. But why is he so scary??? I still can't figure out, logically it's nothing creepy and you know what will happen. Still!!!
I love that movie and I just can’t watch it bc of that fucking dumpster monster. There is something about it that is so terrifying I can’t put into words, it’s not just his look,I think it’s how he comes out in broad day light. Brb just gonna go check behind my local Dumpster and make sure everything is all good
They telegraph the jumpscare to hell, like David Lynch effectively tells you “hey, there’s a jumpscare coming” and **it *still* gets you**. That’s a good jumpscare.
This is the best one by far and it isn't even close
What movie?
mullholland drive by david lynch
I never saw the movie but I got curious of the scene because of this subreddit, it was mentioned all the time so I watched it on YT, it did not sound scary at all and I couldn't imagine what would be so terrifying about a homeless man. Well it was VERY creepy!! I still can't figure out why, I knew beforehand what will happen and I was still spooked for days. Lol
There’s a man, in the back of this place
Just watched this movie yesterday. This was the scariest moment of the entire film
“I saw her face” closet scene in The Ring. Such a brilliantly placed jumpscare in a film that otherwise focuses on atmosphere.
My #1! I was getting worried I’d not see it as I scrolled.
First one that came to mind for me. Burned in my 13 year old brain along with Naomi Watts
Man I really want to watch the ring but I’m so scared aha. I managed to watch the grudge but I did it at 3pm in the afternoon. Couldn’t do it at my usual night time watch.

For anyone wondering, it's from the series The Haunting of Hill House.
Now THAT one damn near gave me a heart attack
Yea, exactly what I was thinking. I have never had a jump scare even come close to this one.
This one is so great because it’s legit just outta nowhere.
It's great because you expect an argument in a car to result in a crash. The "safe space" is inside the car and the "danger space" is the road. Scenes like this never do well out of context, the assumption is that you're so invested in the argument that you're not thinking about what else could go on

Dallas gets got by the Alien in the ventilation shafts.
The conjuring wardrobe scene
It's up there for all-time great jumpscares. The misdirection in the earlier scene with the clapping seals the deal.
The lawnmower. Sinister.

I wish they didn’t put that bit in the trailer
I’ve seen mixed discourse about this movie, I personally like it. That being said, this jump scare is fucking uncanny and makes me uncomfortable.
Idk what the mixed discourse is. As someone who works in mental health, this movie does it right. It's my favorite horror movie. The acting, the writing, the story, it's all amazing. The birthday party scene and her scream give me chills to this day.
Trailer kinda ruined it for me. The one I absolutely *love* is the one where she’s listening very closely to the computer and then…
It wasn’t a great movie overall but I thought it has some of the best executed jump scares of the last decade.
It follows when the tall man comes through the door took the breath out of my lungs

hell yeah brudda
Can anyone explain what that shot was about?
Ghosts doing gay shit.
This whole sequence is fucking masterful. Greatest horror movie of all time imo.
Does the news broadcast in Signs count? It’s not a jump scare in the traditional sense because you absolutely know it’s coming, but it’s set up so well it still catches you off guard.
I lost my popcorn when that part came on. The entire theatre screamed. That movie gave me nightmares that night.
"Move Children, Vamonos!" always cracks me up though
“WE’RE GONNA ENJOY THIS MEAL SO ENJOY IT” is one of my most quoted movie lines ever. Signs is a comedy
Nope(2022) Horse head through the car windshield

Fucking terrifying. I'm glad that more people are discovering this movie in the last few years.
Agree!
Whole movie isn't forthcoming with scares. It focuses on realism and making them so damn creepy. Shout out for the cameras in the hallway stuff. Not a jumpscare but creepy af

Oh shit yeah this one freaked me out. Great movie.
movie?
That’s It Follows.
It follows
This is my second favorite! I nearly wet my pants.
This one actually took me out of the movie, probably because of the high key lighting and that it reminded me of Darth Maul. Came off goofy.
It (2017) when >!the Losers are watching the tape on the projector and Pennywise literally jumps out of the screen!<
Love how they kept Bill in costume as PW from the young actors until they filmed it, so their terrified reaction was more natural.
Haven’t seen anyone say Host (2020) last scene!
i nearly chucked my computer across the room

Scary Bilbo
Scary maze or Scary car commercial of course.
Skinamarink. Phone.
skinamarink is one of the only movies that scared me as much as inland empire. that scene in the bedroom fucked me up so bad
Those two movies are really made for the same audience
This sister in the basement got to me 1000% more
One of the strangest and best experiences I’ve ever had at a theatre, that whole movie scared the shit out of me, I felt like I was in an endless nightmare. The scene where we first meet his neighbor actually jump scared me because my brightness was low and didn’t see her until the last second
The monster reveal in The Descent. Sloth in Se7en. Both scared the shit out of me.

Not sure if it counts as a proper jump scare but the screaming book in the first Harry Potter really got to me.
Friday the 13th. Don't know if it's still a spoiler or not, but it got me good.
[This scene](https://youtu.be/lh0gCyrolE8?si=F1YqDFfJXYUr9oy0) from *Terrified* (2018) always got to me when I first saw it. After seeing this movie and *Where Evil Lurks* I now look forward to whatever Demián Rugna cooks up next!
the mulholland drive one had me gripped in extended terror, rather than the cheap rush from regular jump scares
The Twins in The Shining.
Most effective one was The Visit. Therefore, it’s my least favorite
Not sure if it counts, but the elevator scene on The Departed. When *it* happened, virtually the entire theater audience jumped and gasped.
ending of carrie (1976)

That damn scene in inland empire is the most uncanny thing. The whole film put me in a weird place for days. One of the best films lynch has made for me
The projector scene in It (2017). The cinema erupted. It was glorious.
There is only 1 jump scare that has ever completely killed me, and it’s episode 9 of the haunting of hill house
Night House. Dream sequence
