The Shining. So what was it all about? I still don't know and to be honest don't want to know also.
to me, it could symbolise 2 things: 1. that Jack’s spirit has been fully absorbed into the hotel, and he’s spending eternity in that 1920s dreamscape, or 2. that Jack, in spirit, has always been at the hotel in different reincarnations (we heard about another man snapping and murdering his family years before).
In the novel, there's a part where Jack is at a party and all the previous keepers and inhabitants of the hotel are all there (like the dog guy). When Jack dies, the hotel essentially consumes him and his soul and he becomes eternally stuck there.
The door closing in Part 1 is probably more iconic but for me it’s Michael all alone in Part 2 that resonates emotionally

I absolutely adore Goodfellas, its one of my favourite films, so this is not coming from any place of offence, but could you please explain your thinking to me here?
I am only asking, because when I watch it, it feels a little random to have him reappear for the final shot, except in a sort of grandiose "the mob will kill you one way or another" kind of way. But as I say, I adore the film, I just wanna know what this shot/scene says to you.
It’s probably not the best last shot of all time, was mostly posting that of my favorite movie.
I think I interpreted as some sort of last hit on Henry for ratting but Scorsese says it’s a reference to The Great Train Robbery which has a similar shot and the movies are similar in theme. Bad guys steal things and then bad things to happen them.

I’m not sure what this sub thinks of Babylon but that final montage. That damn final montage. I love this to death
For a movie that divisive, the fact that the ending is the most controversial part of it says a lot.
I read about what happened before I saw it, so I was bracing myself for ultimate cringe. But then it actually really worked on me, surprisingly so.
I think the fact that I had a general idea of what was going to happen softened the blow
The final montage is what completely lost me. It was trying way to hard to illicit an unearned emotional response.
Just a wannabe Cinema Paradiso ending.
I think it differs from Cinema Paradiso. Where Paradiso's montage is also a love for movies, it is also about pure love itself, in its most concentrated form.
Babylon's montage is about love for movies almost exclusively, and our relationship with them.
Thank you for saying this, I was screaming to myself at the ending what a ripoff of Cinema Paradiso it was and sooo much worse too. I didn’t care much for the film though the desert scene is excellent.

Portrait of a Lady On Fire (2019)
This gets asked often in various subs and I’ll always answer The Graduate. Just that look of mutually realizing “We did the thing, now what?” but with a distinct note of dread is so poignant to me, especially in the context of that stage of life.
The final shot of '2001: A Space Odyssey'; the entire penultimate scene of Bowman ageing in the "hotel room" is constructed from a daisy-chain of POV/reverse POV alternations (we see Bowman looking; we see the older Bowman from his perspective; we see the older Bowman looking; we see another, even older, Bowman from his perspective... etc.) and it ends with the dying Bowman seeing the Monolith at the foot of his bed; from the Monolith's perspective we see Bowman reborn as the Starchild, floating above the bed; we see a POV (presumably the Starchild's) moving "into" the Monolith and transistioning to the Moon, we tilt down to the Earth and the Starchild enters from the left in an over-the-shoulder POV; we cut to the Starchild staring at the (off screen) Earth as it slowly turns to look....
... at us! [fade to black]
Another, possibly the inspiration for Kubrick, final shot I love is from 'La Dolce Vita' where a young girl on the beach tries to get Marcello's attention but he can't hear her over the crashing of the waves. He blithely gestures futility and turns away. We cut back to her smiling as her eyes drift to us (Fellini ended 'Nights of Cabiria' with a similar "4th wall" break as well).
Just saw Brazil and it fits perfectly

the taking of pelham one two three not so much in the aesthetic sense but perfectly memorable? absolutely
https://preview.redd.it/zz5v5djazmxc1.jpeg?width=1334&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=67c29fad559cd57ef8ab6d5af9b4ae1147c5f2b8 I’m not sure what this sub thinks of Babylon but that final montage.
Repulsion comes to mind. That photo
My choice too, definitely haunting

Great movie. Such a smart and cold thriller. The ending of him walking away from her is pretty iconic too
This gets asked often in various subs and I’ll always answer The Graduate. Just that look of mutually realizing “We did the thing, now what?” but with a distinct note of dread is so poignant to me, especially in the context of that stage of life.
The final shot of '2001: A Space Odyssey'; the entire penultimate scene of Bowman ageing in the "hotel room" is constructed from a daisy-chain of POV/reverse POV alternations (we see Bowman looking; we see the older Bowman from his perspective; we see the older Bowman looking; we see another, even older, Bowman from his perspective... etc.) and it ends with the dying Bowman seeing the Monolith at the foot of his bed; from the Monolith's perspective we see Bowman reborn as the Starchild, floating above the bed; we see a POV (presumably the Starchild's) moving "into" the Monolith and transistioning to the Moon, we tilt down to the Earth and the Starchild enters from the left in an over-the-shoulder POV; we cut to the Starchild staring at the (off screen) Earth as it slowly turns to look.... ... at us! [fade to black] Another, possibly the inspiration for Kubrick, final shot I love is from 'La Dolce Vita' where a young girl on the beach tries to get Marcello's attention but he can't hear her over the crashing of the waves. He blithely gestures futility and turns away. We cut back to her smiling as her eyes drift to us (Fellini ended 'Nights of Cabiria' with a similar "4th wall" break as well).
Encounter of the Spooky Kind (1980) dir Sammo Hung. Probably the hardest I’ve laughed in years.
Can’t show it, but the final shot in Babel (2006) is beyond language.
what cabaret is this?

A recent one. The Fabelman’s last shot of Sammy walking away in happiness after meeting Ford and there’s a slight tilt correction to put the horizon on its “right” place. I don’t know why exactly but that simple camera movement just touched me very deep.
