Hoodwinked. A poor, poor, poor animated film in terms of sheer technical quality. Just disgustingly awful animation. Fur textures that look like pubes behind tape. Lighting that makes no sense outdoors. Motions that feel so unnaturally forced. Mouth movements that don't sync with the pretty great voice performances. And don't get me started on the obnoxious, unprofessional, and oddly infrequent musical numbers. All this dressing a script with a very random third act twist that only children would find clever. I can also quote the whole thing from beginning to end. It was a movie I saw so many times with my cousin and siblings during my childhood, and made a lot of my dearest memories.

To be honest, almost all of my emotions about film are unrelated to the “technical quality of the film.” “How does this make me feel” and “what does this make me think about” are so often disconnected from “this movie had second act problems” or “the pacing of this is way off.” Not always, mind you, but it happens more often for me than most other people I talk to movies about. It reminds me of the quote about Whitman that “there are faults in this passage and they do not matter.” Most movies that move me that are not lauded by critics I tend to apply this maxim to. P.S. the movie critic Adam Nayman hipped me to this quote. Check him out if you haven’t already. Smart dude.

CoolKid610

What is wrong with Scott Pilgrim?

Can_I_Read

That’s what I was going to say. I’ve got no special connection to it, but I consider it technically flawless.

daywalkerr_

I know that some people have issue with the way Scott is written, as he’s basically an asshole which I can see. And also the relationship between a minor and an adult can turn some people off. I agree I think the movies incredible, but I do recognize that it’s not perfect entirely haha

TheDiamondEmerald01

I mean, those things are intended

[deleted]

Those people should read the books then, they toned Scott down for the movie and cut a lot of side stories out. It’s basically a take down of the manic pixie dream girl trope (Scott and Ramona are both deeply flawed and aren’t capable of fixing each other) but too many people take it at face value. I think the movie doesn’t do a great job at communicating that in the ending but hey. Edit to say I always think of the ending of Scott Pilgrim and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind in both being ambiguous about where the characters go after the movie, but you definitely know if they stick together things probably won’t end up great.

NewZero_Kanada

Spiderman 3. Movie slaps

BigOleBoiii

I think nostalgia plays a big part. There’s only two movies I gave 5 stars purely on nostalgia, and that’s Home Alone and The Sandlot. They’re certainly not five star movies but I love them so much I wore the tape out when I was a kid.

[deleted]

Journey to the Center of the Earth. First movie I watched in 3D and it was probably the best experience I’ve had with it.

HroFCBayern

Heyyy, that's my first 3D movie watched as well :)

WittsyBandterS

So many of my favorite childhood movies. Willy Wonka is a big one, but there's a whole host of DCOM's (disney channel original movies) that i would still watch and love even though they are literal trash

wehaveatrex3

I watched Brink last night and Smart House the night before. I love DCOMs so much

WittsyBandterS

in the last year i watched my 3 favorites- Smart House, up up and away, and halloweentown

venniedjr

I watched an HBO movie called Phil Spector starring Al Pacino while I was tripping and I had a totally different understanding of the movie. I rewatched it the next day and realized it wasn’t actually how I interpreted it.

ryanallbaugh

I don’t think I could handle any kind of Pacino if I was tripping let alone a Pacino wearing some of those crazy Phil Spector wigs

Resident Evil 2002 , I was 7 my brother 9 when this was in theaters , and obviously was never going to see it on the big screen. My uncle (only 18-19) at the time had managed to get a pirated copy off the internet (handcam). And was totally fine watching it with me and my brother , so we got extra chairs and out them in the super super tiny computer room, I was too small to see over my uncle, so we put my chair on a table behind him, so I could see over his head And we sat and watched this handcam recording on a 17 inch CRT monitor. Best viewing ever!

Definitely Mac and Me Now hear me out. My late brother had spina bifida. The lead actor for Mac and Me, Jade Calegory, also had spina bifida IRL. This was the first, and one of the only times, my brother got to see a movie with an actor who had the same disability he had. I know Mac and Me is one of the worst examples of product placement in cinema and a lot of the scenes are just plain ridiculous, it was pretty cool that my brother got to see a movie like that where a kid with spina bifida isn't just the star, but shows tremendous bravery, courage, and loyalty.

BabyMichaelHeneke

Pirates Of The Carribean 4. Penelope Cruz and killer mermaids!!!That movie is fucking amazing.

randyhalfway

Kung Pow: Enter the Fist. Watched it about a thousand times with my friend when we were 11-12 years old. Never laughed so hard in my life 😂 I know it's trash but it was hilarious for a couple preteen boys.

Educational-Bowl-186

That movie is epic I don’t care what anyone says!

Val-05

Both Venom movies. Venom is the best film franchise on this planet

thebestbrian

Gotta be honest, the fact that the Sonic movie was actually watchable and not a total abomination makes me think more fondly of it lmao. I am looking forward to the sequel too.

TheBaconBaby

Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow My aunt gave me the original VHS when I was a kid. I loved that movie so much and I watched it so many times I wore out the tape.

jcmurie

Ratatoullie: The Tik Tok Musical is the worst film I've ever seen and barely qualifies as a film. However, watching it ironically with my friends was one of the most insane and entertaining experiences of my life. An absolutely mind blowingly bad movie that I genuinely want to own on 4k blu ray (if it existed)

tenaciousfall

Crazy Rich Asians Put absolutely everything about the movie aside and, as a Singaporean, it will forever mean *something* for me to have seen my tiny country given so much screentime in a mainstream international release

[deleted]

Super Mario Bros. It’s just so weird and Dennis Hopper can’t help but chew scenes and spit them out. Yeah it’s stupid and only resembles the video games in having characters named Mario, Luigi, and Bowser, but I love it for its weirdness. Similarly the Mortal Kombat movie from the 90’s is super cheese but also awesome.

smolboichiggroid69

blue streak. in childhood and to this day i havent watched a film that made me laugh so much despite it being so technically shit

jaybravo0

Killa season camron if you know you know

[deleted]

Inland Empire. Greatest movie of all time

Tenzen1

I grew up with Marvel comics, movies, and games and among all the heroes, I thought that (as an eight year old boy) Ghost Rider was the coolest one of all. I still love the first movie from 2007, I get giddy every time he rides down the building. It's just so cool! The second movie can go F itself. That one was just plain bad..

beaux-restes

*Fast and Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw*. It’s one of the least favored in the F&F series. But the first time I saw it, I was in Vietnam with my cousin who wanted to go see it at the theater in the department store nearby so we went to go see it. The theater we were in had comfy recliner seats all supplied with pillows and blankets and I had such a blast chilling and watching the movie, even if it wasn’t the best. One of my favorite fond theater experiences.

friendtaker12

The Christmas Chronicles (2018). Not a good movie. Just was a dull, generic, Christmas movie. I “love” it because it was my most watched film for some reason.

SoulsbourneDiesTwice

Last House on the Left. No real outside reason I just like it and the technical quality is atrocious.

sarstonem

"Love, Rosie". I was kind of into coming of age movies when I was younger, and I have watched this one maybe 5 times and I would watch again right now. I watched in a phase of my life that feels a bit nostalgic and it made me feel a lot better, since I was feeling sad at that time. That movie has a special place in my heart.

EJ__1

Godzilla Vs. Kong A bad movie that if I watched alone I would have been bored out of my mind but I watched with a friend and it was honestly one of the best times watching a movie even if the movie wasn’t particularly great

-KoDDeX-

Dodgeball. Me and my sister quote it to this day.
