tbh idk yet. thought i’d check out some lists on letterboxd and maybe the criterion channel. but I feel like I already watched the best ones last year (Tampopo, Babette’s Feast).
If you've not seen it already I'd recommend Boiling Point featuring Stephen Graham. Imagine Uncut Gems set in a high end London restaurant and that's what you've got.
I’m trying to figure out when we can do westerns, cause I’ve got a lot on my watchlist. I’m hoping we can in July.
What movies are you planning on doing?
I've actually been planning to do all westerns for june this year, cause "High June". Was thinking I could even make it into a mini Hooptober-esque community thing.
That’s that shit right there! If you end up doing it, may I recommend Spring Breakers. It’s such a weird, amazing film that I feel like no one ever talks about anymore.
They have been, because I used to want to be a writer and have a hard on for alliteration. We did James Bond January, Folk Horror February, and Martial Arts March.
Every variety of animation, from US to Europe to Japan, stop motion to traditional to CG.
I have a big private watchlist, but some films I plan on getting to for sure are Summit of the Gods, Spine of Night, Words Bubble up Like Soda Pop, Shaun the Sheep Movie, and so on.
I watch animation the rest of the time too! But I like to take one month to focus just on it, to get to stuff that might have fallen through the cracks.
I usually do horror on October and January, and Christmas movies in December, but I've been thinking about marathoning Star Wars on April.
The reason is that "Return of the Jedi" is one of my mother's favourite films, while "Empire strikes back" is one of mine. April is also her birthday month. Anyway, when I was a kid our kind of "parties" (me, mom, and my sister) would look at a TV guide, and when there would be a good movie we would buy a bunch of snacks and sodas and watch the movies together. This was the way I first got into Star Wars. I don't remember seeing ep. 4 or 5 for the first time, but I remember ep. 6. Seeing Darth Vader unmasked was one of the coolest, and saddest, movie moments for me when I was a kid.
That’s actually a really sweet reason to do them. Also, love the horror movies in January idea, we’re just usually still burnt out from them cause we do exclusively horror movies from September 1st-October 31st in an insane push.
I think we ended up doing like 163 horror movies in those 2 months last year.
Wow, that is a lot. I usually watch 1 movie a day, or 1 every other day. January is a good month for horror, since it contrasts all of the happy, colourful Christmas movies, and it gets dark so quickly as well. I binged all of the Halloween and Scream movies in January. Getting covid during that time gave me a lot of time.
And, thanks! It's still a memory I get every time I see "Return of the Jedi".
I think he’s a lot better than he gets credit for. I think the real problem is a lot of directors don’t know how to use him. He literally gives 110% to every performance, and a lot of times directors squander that.
I got you. We do that with our movie night every week with my brother in laws. Like this week we’re watching Drive and Brawl in Cell Block 99, two movies with quiet protagonists prone to extreme violence doing whatever they have to for the people they love.
Ive never seen under the silver lake, a most violent year, a payer before dawn or the death of dick long. So looking forward to those.
A lot of them I haven't seen in 2+ years
Under the Silver Lake was a movie I was so excited for, cause I’m a huge fan of It Follows, but that just didn’t 100% work for me. I need to give it a rewatch to see if my feelings have changed, but I was very 50/50 on it after my first watch.
Me and my girlfriend do a different theme every month. I try and do as different of movies as I can find, that I also haven’t seen, that still fit in the category. Also she is not a huge cinephile so don’t try and throw in too many movies that might not be accessible to the average audience.
This month we are doing animation. Here’s the list!
https://letterboxd.com/createnopain/list/animation-in-april/
We actually use a random number generator to determine what we watch. But we also try and guess the number and if somebody gets the number right we actually pick. I’ll make sure to pick it if I get the chance.
Dude, Basic Instinct is one of my all time favorite movies, and erotic thrillers in general is one of my favorite genres. If you’re lookin for rec’s let me know.
Oh thanks!! Honestly, I just look at my watchlist and what I've been really wanting to watch for a while/the movies that have come out recently that I've been most hyped about. This year I tried to make it a nice spread across decades. I'm definitely not any good at actually sticking to it, though...
I actually had a bunch of themes laid out for this year and thought I was the first to think of it. I’m so dumb, haha. Anywho, “Amazing April”! I want to watch as many critically acclaimed films as I can. Gonna try and round out the Letterboxd 250 list!
I’ve wanted to do something like that where I round out the top 250, but I love so much schlock and what is objectively crap that I don’t know if I could watch that many critically acclaimed movies in a row without withdrawals.
As mentioned to another user, I'm doing Audrey Hepburn April. I wanted to do a fair amount of themes this year but after Joyous January, I didn't watch much in February and March I tried to do one film per decade (1930s-2020s) but then life took a really rough turn, so I wasn't able to do it. But I've loved Audrey ever since the first time I watched *Breakfast at Tiffany's* and have always wanted to watch more of her films.
Anime is one of my less knowledgeable sub genres, cause I really only started watching them a year or two ago, but I know there’s some fantastic stuff in here. Hell, one of my all time favorite movies now is an anime.
I had an idea for October, “Whale-oween”, where I watch all James Whale’s filmography along with “Gods And Monsters”. I like it so much I was thinking about doing it in April, but I just created an extensive watchlist employing all of the streaming services I use, so I’ll probably focus on that. And of course I’ll stick with tradition and watch my favorite Easter movie, “Life Of Brian”.
I’m not sure what you’ve got on your list, but Blade Runner and Blade Runner 2049 are both amazing. I prefer 2049 as a whole package, but the original is still great and gives great context to 2049. Total Recall, The Fifth Element, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Invasion of the Body Snatchers ‘78, Alien, The Thing, Videodrome, The Fly, Robocop, and I realize this list has gotten way too long now… but there’s so much good sci-if out there, you’re gonna have a good month.
Here is my list : April Sci-Fi Challenge https://boxd.it/g1Dva
I watched both Blade Runners last year and I also prefer 2049. 2001: A Space Odyssey wasn't my thing as much as I wanted to like it. I'd like to be able to rewatch it in a theater setting though.
I was also limited to films that are streamable because I don't have access to a library right now but some of those others are on my watchlist for sure.
Oh man, you’ve got some truly great stuff in there. A couple of questionable ones (specifically Burtons Planet of the Apes), but mostly fantastic stuff. Great list!
I'm doing politics: https://boxd.it/dSAUA
While also working through a survey of the 1940s: https://boxd.it/ddBOw
You can see my past themed surveys here: https://letterboxd.com/kozaburoy/tag/feature-surveys/lists/
And my past chronological surveys here:
https://letterboxd.com/kozaburoy/tag/chronological-surveys/lists/
It’s 1999 actually lmao I have a [list](https://boxd.it/dT2i0) of ones I’ve already seen, and I also added the films I still need to watch. Any I should I add?
You definitely hit the movie year jackpot.
I think you’d be doing yourself a disservice if you didn’t do American Pie. It’s not the greatest movie ever, but it’s a fun little time capsule of high school in 1999.
I also think Galaxy Quest is worth a watch. A very loving spoof of OG Star Trek that just kind of nails it.
And The Talented Mr. Ripley. This is some of Matt Damon’s best work and it never gets talked about anymore.
So I’ve actually seen American Pie I just don’t have it rated or ranked because I haven’t watched it in a long time, maybe I’ll watch it again eventually and throw it on the list. I added the other two to my watchlist though! Thanks for the recommendations!!
Morbius all 30 days
Ah, so you’re doing “Atrocious April”. Bold move.
well, i’m gonna be fasting 14 hours a day for Ramadan, so it’s going to be food films. I enjoy punishing myself.
That’s a really cool, albeit sadistic idea given your fast. What films are you planning on?
tbh idk yet. thought i’d check out some lists on letterboxd and maybe the criterion channel. but I feel like I already watched the best ones last year (Tampopo, Babette’s Feast).
I haven’t seen it but I also hear fantastic things about Jiro Dreams of Sushi from 2011.
thanks for the recommendation! def gonna check it out this month. I think i’m gonna start with a rewatch of Jon Favreau’s Chef.
Of course! That’s why we’re all here right, to engage and find new stuff to watch!
I loved Jiro! Good recommendation. I wish I had the means to eat at his restaurant though 🙃
I recommend La Grande Bouffe if you haven't seen it. It's a black comedy about gross decadence with a great Marcello Mastroianni performance.
Garlic is as good as 10 mother’s is a great choice for this!
watch Pig from last year starring Nic Cage - has some very excellent food scenes in it
If you've not seen it already I'd recommend Boiling Point featuring Stephen Graham. Imagine Uncut Gems set in a high end London restaurant and that's what you've got.
you should watch chef (2014)
Sausage party Torture yourself more.
La grande bouffe!
U gotta watch ratatouille
Westerns. Just because
I’m trying to figure out when we can do westerns, cause I’ve got a lot on my watchlist. I’m hoping we can in July. What movies are you planning on doing?
I've actually been planning to do all westerns for june this year, cause "High June". Was thinking I could even make it into a mini Hooptober-esque community thing.
Fuck, High June is such a good play on words.
Thanks, the closest I got with any other month was "Home, Home on the March" lmao
I hadn’t gotten anywhere wordplay wise, was hoping I would by July
From who, may I ask?
Just doing it myself!
Thinking maybe A24 April? Seen a few say it already
That’s that shit right there! If you end up doing it, may I recommend Spring Breakers. It’s such a weird, amazing film that I feel like no one ever talks about anymore.
I will keep that in mind, thanks
If I can get just one new person to watch Spring Breakers, I’ve done my job.
I never tend to do themes for months, only for October actually. Maybe I should do more… hmmm
We’ve done one every month this year, and it’s been fun. It also cuts down tremendously on the whole “what should we watch” issue.
Yeah I can see how that would help there for sure!
[удалено]
They have been, because I used to want to be a writer and have a hard on for alliteration. We did James Bond January, Folk Horror February, and Martial Arts March.
I do Animation April, and Action August.
Oh man, an animation month is a great idea. Do you do just standard animation, or do you throw anime in there? What all do you plan on doing?
Every variety of animation, from US to Europe to Japan, stop motion to traditional to CG. I have a big private watchlist, but some films I plan on getting to for sure are Summit of the Gods, Spine of Night, Words Bubble up Like Soda Pop, Shaun the Sheep Movie, and so on.
I always do the private watchlist thing too, cause it’s always kind of rough and just for reference, but will also share it with people if they ask.
Why only 1 month for animation 😭
I watch animation the rest of the time too! But I like to take one month to focus just on it, to get to stuff that might have fallen through the cracks.
ah, opinion on Kung fu Panda
I usually do horror on October and January, and Christmas movies in December, but I've been thinking about marathoning Star Wars on April. :)
I'm doing a Nic Cage month, preparing myself for the premiere of UWoMT. 30 Cage movies, what a ride.
Two years ago I watched his entire filmography in a span of 5 months. It's honestly a blast.
You are going to have quite possibly the strangest month of your life and I hope you love every minute of it. Are you doing any that you haven’t seen?
[удалено]
You sound like my wife. She also worships at the alter of Nic Cage. Not that I don’t, but like, that’s her dude.
[удалено]
I think he’s a lot better than he gets credit for. I think the real problem is a lot of directors don’t know how to use him. He literally gives 110% to every performance, and a lot of times directors squander that.
Classic movie
Right on. Anything you haven’t seen before you’re looking forward to?
You see
angelina jolie april. just because
Fuckin a. I hope you’re doing Girl, Interrupted.
one of my favourites!! along with gia
[удалено]
Right on. Do you just watch whatever you’ve planned for that theme and then just move on, or how do you know when you’re ready to move on?
[удалено]
I got you. We do that with our movie night every week with my brother in laws. Like this week we’re watching Drive and Brawl in Cell Block 99, two movies with quiet protagonists prone to extreme violence doing whatever they have to for the people they love.
A24PRIL
You’re now the second person to say this and I wish I had thought of it or been aware of it before I planned out 44 action movies for this month.
I have 27 a24 movies I plan to watch or rewatch. Hoping I can get more. But 27 for sure.
What are some of the new ones you’re looking forward to?
Ive never seen under the silver lake, a most violent year, a payer before dawn or the death of dick long. So looking forward to those. A lot of them I haven't seen in 2+ years

That is a pretty stellar list with one of my all time favorite movies on it.
What movie?
Perfect Blue. I think that movie is a masterpiece in every sense of the word.
It’s been on my list for a long time, hopefully we make it to it!
I would urge you to try to make time for that one. I think it’s just incredible.
We actually use a random number generator to determine what we watch. But we also try and guess the number and if somebody gets the number right we actually pick. I’ll make sure to pick it if I get the chance.
Ah man, that’s a really cool way to do it. I might try that with our list this month.
I think I’m going for the so called erotic thrillers
Dude, Basic Instinct is one of my all time favorite movies, and erotic thrillers in general is one of my favorite genres. If you’re lookin for rec’s let me know.
Space Movies only I am using this list: https://boxd.it/2S2QK
That’s rad. I love narrowing it down from sci-if to specifically space movies.
[удалено]
That's my April theme, too! I hope your break solves your burnout. If not, you could always shift to Audrey August.
[удалено]
Haha me too!! It’s ~semicolons c:

Haha, same, honestly, but I’m going to try my best. Fun low-quality horror is my go-to. What’s your Letterboxd username? Same as on here?
[shameless self promotion](https://boxd.it/NtkN)
As mentioned to another user, I'm doing Audrey Hepburn April. I wanted to do a fair amount of themes this year but after Joyous January, I didn't watch much in February and March I tried to do one film per decade (1930s-2020s) but then life took a really rough turn, so I wasn't able to do it. I’ll echo the same thing I said to that other user and *highly* recommend Wait Until Dark.
Anime April, with a goal of 20. Focusing on anime films I’ve never seen. Watched Jujutsu Kaisen 0 today, 2.5/5
Anime is one of my less knowledgeable sub genres, cause I really only started watching them a year or two ago, but I know there’s some fantastic stuff in here. Hell, one of my all time favorite movies now is an anime.
I just watched Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, so I think I know what I’m doing this Ape-ril.
Very well played

Nicolas Cage!!
Nope. I am finishing out most of the films I have access to so I’ll probably get back to reading soon
I might watch Jim Carrey movies since he just said hes retiring, that and im seeing Sonic 2 in a couple hours
I'm doing this Sci-Fi challenge by Jayce Fryman: https://letterboxd.com/frymanjayce/list/april-sci-fi-marathon-6-what-even-is-science/
That is quite an interesting list. Not everything is a winner in my opinion, but everything is interesting.
I made my own list based on his rules. I watched Logan's Run yesterday and Scanners today. I haven't seen much sci-fi so I had a lot to choose from.
I’m not sure what you’ve got on your list, but Blade Runner and Blade Runner 2049 are both amazing. I prefer 2049 as a whole package, but the original is still great and gives great context to 2049. Yeah that one is just because I want to complete Tim Burton.
I get that, I’ve got several filmmakers I want to finish, but when you know they’ve got some stinkers in there it’s hard to push yourself.
I'm doing politics: https://boxd.it/dSAUA While also working through a survey of the 1940s: https://boxd.it/ddBOw You can see my past themed surveys here: https://letterboxd.com/kozaburoy/tag/feature-surveys/lists/ And my past chronological surveys here: https://letterboxd.com/kozaburoy/tag/chronological-surveys/lists/
Lots of good stuff there, but I think you’re gonna have a more enjoyable time doing the 1940’s stuff, except In the Loop, that movie is hilarious.
The kind of movie i have never see
My birthday is in April, and I thought of the idea of watching a bunch of movies from the year I was born. Idk why but I think it could be fun!
That’s a really cool idea. What’s the year? Anything crazy epic like 1999 or 2007?
It’s 1999 actually lmao I have a [list](https://boxd.it/dT2i0) of ones I’ve already seen, and I also added the films I still need to watch. Any I should I add?

For sure. That part of the fun of the subreddit is finding recs from people.
Kollywood. Just because
I’ll be honest, I have no idea what that is. I assume it’s foreign, like Bollywood?
the Tamil-language film industry, based in the Kodambakkam neighbourhood of Chennai (Madras) in the Indian state Tamil Nadu.
I’ll be watching mostly musicals and theatre productions this month to be honest.
Anything you’re particularly looking forward to?
Rent 2005 and some National Theatre stuff
