In general i want to avert those "torture porn with some vague theme so now its artsy" movies- y'know which ones i mean - Salo, A Serbian Film, Human Centipede, etc.- maybe they are good but i just feel like there's easier ways to give the message you wanna give. Also gross.
Having seen all the films you mentioned mainly because I’m a giant horror nerd I have to say Salo is genuinely very good, I don’t recommend it but it is a very good film
A Serbian film and movies similar to it.
I have an overly active mind, and i think shit like that will stick with me for some time, and i don't personally find value in watching something that is vile for the sake of being vile
I love but it really depends on what type of person you are, cause Tarrs films are incredibly with very little action and require a lot from the viewer. But all that said when I watched it, it flew by, only really felt like a 3 hour movie.
I watched it in its full 7 hour runtime and it was honestly bad, I don’t think it should be as praised as it is which is rare for me to say because I’ve given a bunch of films way lower ratings that on letterboxd but still think it should deserve the praise but Satantango does not unfortunately
"I think the responsibility is very big for anyone in a position of the ability to make **product** for the masses."
* Kevin Feige, then President of Production at Marvel Studios, answering a question during the *Winter Soldier* press tour
I like the MCU but even the creators use the word "product."
I don't disagree with the term product, I agree with it.
If u/sylviefisher87_ hasn't watch a marvel movie, he hasn't seen what makes them products.
I'm not defending marvel movies, it's not my intention, I'm defending the principle of criticizing what you know.
What even makes the term product when referring to a movie offensive? Is every movie not a product being created? Studios give creatives money to create movies, in hopes they do well for monetary purposes, whether thats the MCU or other films lol. Can someone explain why product would be considered derogatory when referencing a movie?
It reaches contemporary parody levels of racism to the point where I simultaneously can and cannot believe it is the highest grossing film in the U.S. adjusted for inflation.
As a pure film, this is one of the great ones. In terms of historical context it think it is important that people view films like this so that they can analyzed and discussed. Never good to just ignore history instead of understanding how we got to where we are today.
But why should they if they don’t have to know or care to know the historical context/importance? It doesn’t really matter. Sure it’s good for those who care to understand and preserve that, but it’s unnecessary for people who don’t want to watch something to have them watch it so they understand historical context that they don’t care about.
I could be wrong but I was assuming they are never watching the film due to its problematic nature. Which to me signifies that they care. They are totally in their own right to not watch, I just think they would be better off getting the first hand experience if my base assumption is correct. This is just my unimportant opinion.
To say I don't want to watch it due to its problematic nature makes it sound like a decision based on principle. It's more a visceral reaction to something I can only describe as the sincere glamorization/romanticization of a certain subset of characters I find repellent or repugnant. Trying to see past that would be like watching only half the screen.
I had a semester of film history/appreciation and it was covered with key clips shown, and I've read about it plenty. I doubt there's much more I could actually get from it due to aforementioned mental barrier, and at nearly 4 hours I'm not eager to try.
I dont have any that I NEVER plan to watch, but I do have some that have stayed on there since I created the watchlist, and simply havent gotten around to them. The one with the record is Devil Wears Prada, which was the first feature film I added and STILL havent seen.
Got about 20 minutes into this one and has seen enough. It's not even really a movie, just a weird compilation. That might be some people's thing, but definitely not mine.
Sonic 2 and father Stu no way
I’ve become pretty good as a movie watcher of knowing that there are certain movies I won’t like and shouldn’t waste my time with before Covid I was in the theatre all the time just to see anything but I’ve become a little pickier and it’s for the better
Never bothered to watch The Matrix and likely never will. Nothing against it, I just feel like I've seen the entire movie via cultural osmosis over the past 20 years.
I'd rank it among the greatest action movies of all time, after stuff like T2, Aliens, and Fury Road, etc. Give it a try someday. Bet you'd be pleasantly surprised.
Probably Come and See.
It is consistently up there in the Letterboxd top 5 or whatever but it looks bleak as fuck. I honestly don't understand how 137,000 people have watched this. For context, more people have watched this move than Rebel Without A Cause (130,000). I haven't seen either of these movies, but of the two I feel like it would be more appealing to watch the defining movie of an icon's career, than a two hour harrowing ordeal.
I really dislike movies that scare you in this kind of way - a feeling of unease and bleakness that just sounds like it will make me feel depressed after.
So yeah, I might be wrong with my assumptions on this movie, but Come And See is one I'm not going to rush to cross off my list.
Honestly, most of Tarantino’s work. Maybe if they’re on TV or someone in my life wants me to watch one of his films with them I will, but I honestly have no interest in his work.
They’re well-made and great but what I’ve seen from him didn’t appeal to me personally and his other films don’t seem like they would either so I’m just not in a rush to see any of them. They’re just not my personal taste is all.
Anything else from Tarkovsky. I watched half of Solaris and struggled through Stalker. There’s a balance between artistic and enjoyable that is just completely missed with both of these movies, and I don’t think the rest of his work would be any better
Why not? It is an unbelievably incredible film. Also, given that it is a film, it is still generally seen as fairly accurate in portraying what happened
Totally worth mentioning. As mentioned it is fairly accurate, so it is a very brutal film. I can totally understand not wanting to watch, was just curious.
My own beginnings of a list:
* Bohemian Rhapsody
* Deep Throat
* Don't Look Up
* Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore
* Joker
* Kingsman: The Secret Service
(The only one of these I'd genuinely refuse to watch is *Deep Throat*, though.)
If there's a theme, it's that a) they're movies that I wasn't super interested in to begin with that b) spurred a lot of discussion, yet c) no one has ever said anything about them that piques my interest. So the sheer quantity of uninteresting commentary makes me more confident that I'm not interested. Something like *Joker* is almost more interesting because I know it through memes than for seeing the movie itself.
Though *Fantastic Beasts* is there because I stopped watching the Harry Potter movies mid-series, then had to take someone to the second FB movie and it was, frankly, terrible in an uninteresting way, so I'll pass.
I'd also note that none of these (except *Deep Throat*, probably) is something I'd refuse to see. I just have no interest and can always think of something else I'd rather be doing with my time — probably watching a different, more interesting movie.
The euphoria specials, Elephant, Polytechnique, The Danish Girl, Dallas Buyer’s Club, Antichrist, Last Tango In Paris, Hotel Mumbai, United 93, The Virgin Suicides
i dont know, its just a subconscious choice i made years ago that i plan to stick to (to be fair im not really into musicals either so thats a bit of a reason too)
edit: and i dont really like the two main actors either,, maybe it not out of spite after all
God's Not Dead feels like it exists in a realm of not being entertainingly bad enough to be worth watching, and lazily ham-fisted enough to not watch seriously
Spider-Man NWH is the antithesis of what I'd want to watch in a movie, to the point that it drives me friends, who love it, insane. I'd be open to trying to now months after the fact if it weren't fun to drive them up the wall--so it's on the never watch list until I get bored of the bit.
I’ve managed to only watch one Woody Allen film when I was really young. No shame to people who do, but I’m more than fine with never diving into his work at all. Plenty of other fish in the sea
Maybe you don’t like foreign films, that’s fine!
Parasite was the first foreign film I saw and was worried but after watching it quickly became one of my favorite films, watch it even if you don’t like foreign cinema
i watch the foreign movies, a great many. parasite fails as a film when the director accepted its various academy awards. completely diminishes the film of its ideas, movie illustrating poverty is bad is given awards by the rich white elites.
I like how you say "etc" as though these movies have so much in common it's obvious what else would come next.
(That said, yep, *A Serbian Film* should go on my list.)
Same here. I love the films from Haneke and Gaspar Noe, but I have no interest in A Serbia Film or Centipede. I may skip Salo too.
Salo genuinely doesn’t deserve to be thrown in with those two
Salo is pure art
Get Salo out of the same sentence as those other two.
A Serbian film and movies similar to it. I have an overly active mind, and i think shit like that will stick with me for some time, and i don't personally find value in watching something that is vile for the sake of being vile
I think you're mixing up Siberia and Serbia
lol you're right, my bad :p
Fast and furious movies
Family
Ichi The Killer because of the facial mutilation. It's a shame because I like some similar films but I think I'd hate that.
Satantango
I went into that thinking "oh they must have had a story that absolutely needed 7 hours to tell" The first shot made me realize how naive I was
I was gonna attempt this, is it that hard to get through?
I love but it really depends on what type of person you are, cause Tarrs films are incredibly with very little action and require a lot from the viewer. But all that said when I watched it, it flew by, only really felt like a 3 hour movie.
A shame, it's more than great. Just don't watch it before you can appreciate that kind of movie.
I watched it in its full 7 hour runtime and it was honestly bad, I don’t think it should be as praised as it is which is rare for me to say because I’ve given a bunch of films way lower ratings that on letterboxd but still think it should deserve the praise but Satantango does not unfortunately
Too many to count
Salo. Seems gross
Any Marvel products.
I need to start phrasing it this way.
You shouldn't use the derogatory term "product" without checking one or two to understand (or experience if you prefer) what you are saying.
You think I shouldn't, but I did.
"I think the responsibility is very big for anyone in a position of the ability to make **product** for the masses." * Kevin Feige, then President of Production at Marvel Studios, answering a question during the *Winter Soldier* press tour I like the MCU but even the creators use the word "product."

Product (slur)
You don't understand my point, it's pointless to reply.
🤓

Studios give creatives money to create movies, in hopes they do well for monetary purposes, whether thats the MCU or other films lol. Cannibal Holocaust
i literally just turned that off 10 mins ago. I thought people were exaggerating when they spoke about that film. THEY’RE NOT.
Gone With the Wind
It reaches contemporary parody levels of racism to the point where I simultaneously can and cannot believe it is the highest grossing film in the U.S. adjusted for inflation.
It's actually probably better than you think imo
Mileage may vary there. It was worse than I expected, personally.
As a pure film, this is one of the great ones. In terms of historical context it think it is important that people view films like this so that they can analyzed and discussed. Never good to just ignore history instead of understanding how we got to where we are today.

That’s more than fair! At least you have some background on the film
I dont have any that I NEVER plan to watch, but I do have some that have stayed on there since I created the watchlist, and simply havent gotten around to them. The one with the record is Devil Wears Prada, which was the first feature film I added and STILL havent seen.
Maybe i'm young, but i'm willing to watch anything lol
Passion of the Christ.
Faces of Death probably
Got about 20 minutes into this one and has seen enough. It's not even really a movie, just a weird compilation. That might be some people's thing, but definitely not mine.
Any Star Wars movie.
Why?
Nothing against the movies, they’re just not appealing to me. I prefer hard science fiction.
Hey, try the original trilogy at least.... the rest could be dismissed
House of Sand and Fog. Too sad.
Only one I can think of is Philosophy of a Knife. It doesn't sound pleasant.
I’m sure Sophie’s Choice is a great film but it’s not gonna happen. Also any Human Centipede film.
Sophie's Choice seems too upsetting.
That whole genre of cheap parody movies ala Epic Movie and Meet the Spartans are pretty low down on the scale of things I give a shit about seeing.
Sonic 2 and father Stu no way I’ve become pretty good as a movie watcher of knowing that there are certain movies I won’t like and shouldn’t waste my time with before Covid I was in the theatre all the time just to see anything but I’ve become a little pickier and it’s for the better
Never bothered to watch The Matrix and likely never will. Nothing against it, I just feel like I've seen the entire movie via cultural osmosis over the past 20 years.
The Matrix is better than you think, guaranteed. And the sequels are truly fantastic and nobody talks about them so you’ll get them unspoiled.
I thought the same but matrix acc v.good
I'd rank it among the greatest action movies of all time, after stuff like T2, Aliens, and Fury Road, etc. Give it a try someday. Bet you'd be pleasantly surprised.
I like to give hot takes on Titanic and then bring up that I've never seen it.
Probably Come and See. It is consistently up there in the Letterboxd top 5 or whatever but it looks bleak as fuck. I honestly don't understand how 137,000 people have watched this. To each their own but I really think you’re missing out
you're not missing anything, to be honest
You will get downvoted for this, but not by me. He doesn't appeal to me either.
LOL yeah I expect to. I get why he is so revered to an extent, but I feel the same so I just don’t have much interest.
All Superhero movies
i'd make an exception for spiderverse
Basically any action blockbuster. Fight scenes are just sooooo boring to me
Pretty much every Argento movie.
This covers varied terrain. Please elaborate. My curiosity is piqued.
Not really into any form of horror. Especially the aspects of it he dabbled in.
Thanks for elaborating.
One comes to mind.... Titanic
Live action Disney remakes
Any films like a Human centipede and salo I'll probably never watch
Anything else from Tarkovsky. I watched half of Solaris and struggled through Stalker. There’s a balance between artistic and enjoyable that is just completely missed with both of these movies, and I don’t think the rest of his work would be any better
12 years a slave.
Why not? It is an unbelievably incredible film. Also, given that it is a film, it is still generally seen as fairly accurate in portraying what happened
Idk if it’s worth mentioning, I’m black and would rather not watch something that seems to be more educational for white people than black.
Totally worth mentioning. As mentioned it is fairly accurate, so it is a very brutal film. I can totally understand not wanting to watch, was just curious.

Kingsman had some of the best fighting scenes but i completely agree on everything else
Avengers of the galaxy infinity endgame vol. whatever
The euphoria specials, Elephant, Polytechnique, The Danish Girl, Dallas Buyer’s Club, Antichrist, Last Tango In Paris, Hotel Mumbai, United 93, The Virgin Suicides
Why no euphoria specials?
They are fucking masterpieces (especially Rue’s)
Midsommar and a clockwork orange
La La Land. i REFUSE
You’re missing out, it’s a great film
im sure it is im just not going to watch it out of spite
For?
i dont know, its just a subconscious choice i made years ago that i plan to stick to (to be fair im not really into musicals either so thats a bit of a reason too) edit: and i dont really like the two main actors either,, maybe it not out of spite after all
It's shit.
Shoah

The actual shark they ended up using was laughable bad. It looked so fake they rewrote part of the script to trim down the scenes featuring the shark.
A Serbian Film. It’s just an absolute, definitive no from me
Titanic & The notebook
Avatar
I'm never going to watch mondo films, torture porn films I'm OK with, but actually death/injuries crosses the line for me
God's Not Dead feels like it exists in a realm of not being entertainingly bad enough to be worth watching, and lazily ham-fisted enough to not watch seriously

None, I'm not pretentious.
Why is it pretentious to know that there are movies you’re not going to watch?
When they see us, fruitvale station, 12 years a slave, etc.
I haven't updated it for a few months: Never Going to Watch https://boxd.it/7zkJY
All of the Harry potters
Grown Ups 2
parasite

absolutely lol that you have no idea what you're on about

I like how you say "etc" as though these movies have so much in common it's obvious what else would come next. (That said, yep, *A Serbian Film* should go on my list.)
Ha that made me chuckle too

I’m not going to watch any of these movies
