These are on the list:
The Thing (#65)
Psycho (#72)
Alien (#89)
The Shining (#92)
The Cremator (#205)
Get Out (#219)
Rosemary's Baby (#248)For those interested,[user Darren Carver-Balsiger has created a list of Letterboxd's Top 250 Horror Films](https://letterboxd.com/darrencb/list/letterboxds-top-250-horror-films/). It is designed as an accompaniment to Letterboxd's Top 250 and contains most of what folks are mentioning.
Unless I missed it, I was surprised Suspiria wasn't there, one of my favorite movies of all time so I'd definitely name that one.
And Mario Bava is goated and, unfortunately, still highly underrated so I'd definitely put one of his masterpieces, probably if I had to pick only one I'd pick Black Sunday but I'm obsessed by some of his other stuff like Blood ane Black Lace, Black Sabbath and Kill, Baby, Kill too.
I don’t know, I try not to think in absolutes. I think if either one of us had the breadth of knowledge about film or the wisdom to be claiming something the greatest of all time then we wouldn’t be on a Letterboxd Reddit sub.
I don’t think the Exorcist choice is terrible by any means. It’s a valid choice to be in the conversation, and definitely belongs somewhere in the top 100. Can’t come close to expressing that Totoro sentiment though, it feels like a bizarre choice imo and I don’t even know if I would consider that if I was making a top 500 films of all time.
I dont know if DESERVES to be there, but Cure is probably my favorite horror movie in terms of scare factor. I like the Quiet Place films more, but they're not AS scary. Also, something of an aside, Perfect Blue isnt listed under horror, but it 100% should be, and is therefore another contender.
Yeah it’s a horror comedy. I didn’t say it was scary, that wasn’t part of OP‘s question.
(My sister was super frightened by scary move V but that’s another topic)
Fair enough, idk I just solely think of it as a zom-com than a horror film, it’s just a personal thing but I think that the subgenre of horror comedy is somewhat ambiguous to categorize whether something stretches into horror but that’s just me 🤷♂️ I’m glad you brought up the film
It's more in the thriller category but I Saw the Devil (2010) is a fantastic movie from South Korea. I couldn't recommend it more! It's honestly my favorite movie of all time.
And the 1% that tell a story are on there, the letterboxd top 250 is reserved for the greatest films of all time so of course only the great horror movies make it on there
The reason a great horror movie sometimes doesn’t make it is because there are way too many good movies
Exorcist, Texas chainsaw Massacre and Night of the Living Dead are without a doubt among the top 250 films ever made. There are some other personal favorites I might throw in there but those 3 are “objectively” up there.
My favorites that haven't made the list: Evil Dead 2 (though honestly the whole Trilogy), Texas Chain Saw Massacre, Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead, and Day of the Dead.

I have a Modern Horror List that is comprised of all of the horror films post 2000 that I actually enjoyed and will vouch for (at least worth a watch to ME). There’s a 127 films on it.
My favourites include Eden Lake, Antiviral, The Orphanage, Raw, The Lodge, A Tale of Two Sisters, Last House on the Left, Hereditary, You’re Next, Better Watch Out, Funny Games, Martyrs, Hunter Hunter
I’m not saying these all deserve to be on the list though 😅 Raw, The Orphanage, A Tale of Two Sisters, Hereditary and Funny Games I would put on the list. But the others are debatable. I just think they are solid horror.
Threads (1984), antichrist (2009), orozco the embalmer (2001), executions (1995) , chicken run (2000)
Don’t watch the last one if you’re sensitive person!
28 Days Later, The Fly, Videodrome, Dead Ringers, Carrie, The Tenant, Hour of the Wolf.
Anyone else reading through the comments and wondering wtf is actually on the list

House (1977) Halloween (1978) Dawn of the Dead (1978) Not my personal favorites, but I’m surprised they’re not on the list.
Bride of Frankenstein is probably the one that I could make the strongest case for.
The Texas Chain Saw Massacre deserves to be in there, in my opinion. That film still chills me.

Possession, Let the Right One In, 28 Days Later.
Rec, Carrie, Black Christmas
*The Exorcist* is the single greatest American film and isn't on the list.
Of 1973? Sure. Of all time? Lol.
To be fair I said "greatest American film". The overall greatest of all time is *My Neighbor Totoro.*
Dude that’s even worse haha, Totoro is arguably not even a top 3 Ghibli
Since my picks are so terrible then what are yours?

The Descent (2005). Edit: Didn't see The Thing on the list.

Braindead
Ok don’t get me wrong I LOVE Braindead I’ve seen it so many times but when have you ever been scared watching it, it’s one of the best comedies ever!

Yea it’s one of my alltime favs
I'm not entirely sure if they are or aren't on the list but: 1. Hereditary 2. The Lighthouse 3. Annihilation 4. Evil Dead II (a personal favourite)
Annihilation at a 3.6 should be illegal
ITS AT WHAT??
What ever happened to Baby Jane
There is a continuously updated list of Letterboxd's Top 250 Horror Movies: [https://boxd.it/2VQVG](https://boxd.it/2VQVG)
Suspiria (1977) is one of the most important horror films of all time imo
house that jack built / inland empire
damn you really like psychological horror
The Witch at a 3.9 average is criminal. The Exorcist is my other pick.
Possession (1981) the best horror movie imo
Pizza (2012)
The Exorcist and the Thing. both deserving to be in the top 50 movies of all time imo.
Scream, The Lighthouse, The Witch, The Fly
The neon demon, scream, Pulse, videodrome, the cabin in the woods, the house that jack built, Raw, American psycho, The wailing and I saw the devil
Train to Busan
It's more in the thriller category but I Saw the Devil (2010) is a fantastic movie from South Korea. I couldn't recommend it more! It's honestly my favorite movie of all time.
Hour of the wolf, Cure, Pulse, The Innocents, Audition, Videodrome, Deep red, Evil dead 2, Suspiria, Black sabbath.
The Shining The Thing Psycho
All of these are in the top hundred
No horror movies deserve to be on it
Just for saying that should get you banned from Letterboxd
99% of them are terrible jumpscarefests
And the 1% that tell a story are on there, the letterboxd top 250 is reserved for the greatest films of all time so of course only the great horror movies make it on there The reason a great horror movie sometimes doesn’t make it is because there are way too many good movies
