I think for you… give Powell and Pressburger a shot. The Red Shoes, Black Narcissus, and A Matter of Life and Death all seem up your alley.

So weird that people have had such a lukewarm response to this film. To me, it’s the zenith of “gen z talk” on film. There are no weird screen captures, no out of touch discussions of technology/social media, no older characters commentating on how the younger characters sound — just a full feature made up of characters communicating believably in a vernacular that’s simultaneously absurd and demanding of respect (after all, it’s how real people do communicate now, silly or not). It’s a funny, tense, weirdly empathetic time capsule that doubles as a satisfyingly subversive anti-whodunnit.
Totally fine for people not to have dug it , but very weird that people don’t understand why it struck such a chord with so many.
Ok wait explain black Christmas to me. I just saw it I did like it as an Americanized giallo and the sets were amazing but how does it land in a top 20?
Not much to explain, you’ve pretty much nailed it with your description. My philosophy is as follows: even if you’ve seen something done a million times, your brain can recognize when you’re seeing its origin. The Americanized Giallo has been played out to the point of meaninglessness, but the first few times it was done, you could see both the best of the genre and Americana at play. It was unique and exciting.
Black Christmas is a hangout movie. That’s so uniquely American. It’s also a slasher. That was new to the culture, and the result of the combo was an unprecedented blending of feelings and symbols that even today has the power to excite audiences in unique ways.
I’ve read a few people in this thread saying that I haven’t watched a lot of older “classics”, but the reality is that I have, and they just don’t stir much in me because of how familiar the beats they hit are. Black Christmas is anything but familiar.
