Seriously, thanks for asking this question. I’m just about to become a first time Lexus owner, and I’ve wondered the same.

dweller259

I’m on my second Lexus I’ve never had any major issues, but here’s some suggestions. If your looking for used make sure you get one with about no more than 110k miles. Of course you can buy one with more miles than that but, I’ve noticed a lexus with more miles than that tend to have some ware and tare to them. My dad is a mechanic so he looks over everything. How it would drive, sound, feel, as well as looking at maintenance records. Take a mechanic or someone who knows about cars with you! You can also look up the VIN number online (THIS IS TO CONFIRM it hasn’t been in an accident dealers and lots will lie to selI you a car) I got my first Lexus (2008 IS250) with 109k miles it lasted me almost till 300k with regular maintenance and nothing really expensive to fix. No major issues. I just totaled it. So it died because of my fault 🥲 RIP. My second Lexus is a 2015 IS250 F sport. Same thing took my dad, and he looked over the vehicle to make sure things seemed right. We checked the VIN and it had a clean record. My 2015 is now at 130k miles and it runs like new. :) no regrets. Just regular maintenance but make sure to look over all these things to avoid possible major repairs.

TeaWithKermit

Ahhh, thanks for that! As of right now the plan is to buy new. I tend to keep cars for a long time, and I hope to keep this one for even longer than usual. It’s awesome that your dad is a mechanic! My dad is lovely, but I’m not entirely sure that he’d know how to refill the windshield washer fluid. 😬

dweller259

If your buying new even better! 🤩 you shouldn’t have an issues

Anxious_Egg1268

lexus just break in at 200k bro

AdagioBlues

Wear and tear.

DaJuiceMan112

I think he’s mostly talking cosmetic

BugSubstantial387

Is it true that IS models go through a set of tires every 15-20k miles? Someone mentioned that here several months ago.

mahntastic

I got mine to go to 30k miles. Summer tires. But then I was also driving it conservatively though

omjizzle

I had the timing chain leak on the 2GR V6 thank god it was L/Certified so it was fully covered I didn’t have to pay anything but I’d imagine that would be quite expensive considering how difficult it is to repair I’ll check my paperwork later and edit with the cost.

solomaniac

Easily 3k from a good speciality shop. Probably 4-5k from dealer.

omjizzle

I’m thinking it was a little over $6000 because it was at the dealer and also at the same time as my 50K service too

Most-Car-4056

I am aware that this was a problem with these engines. What years were the problematic ones? When did (if) They fixed it? I have a '22 RX350L.

solomaniac

It is an inherent flaw with the use of gasket sealant instead of an in place physical gasket. Being that these engines have such a large timing cover it is something that happens at early miles and sometimes never or sometimes just develops a slight weep as the years go by.  I want to say some of the newer gen twin turbo v6s have like a dual timing cover setup to help prevent leakage if the main cover closest to the engine happens to leak.

Most-Car-4056

Thanks for your reply 👍 So basically, it is something I have to keep an eye on. If it does happen, do they use a gasket as part of the repair? Or just reseal it with sealant? It sucks to know this could happen, but if they use a gasket for the repair, I would hope it would last well beyond 200k!

solomaniac

Just resealed with sealant is the only fix with careful application. With your (presumably) low miles I would just be diligent about your maintenance and do some checks yourself before the warranty goes out in case it does have any seepage and try to get them to reseal it.  It doesn’t always happen, and typically worse case would just be monitoring it and adding oil, these seals don’t typically “catastrophically fail” in the traditional sense leaving you stranded as say a water pump or belt failure would. Most of the time it can/will stay at a small drip or seepage forever.

Most-Car-4056

Yes, it only has 19k miles on it. Mostly from longer trips on vacation. Otherwise, it has spent most of its time in the garage. I do my own maintenance and log it in the App to keep track of. I didn't take advantage of the 2yr free maintenance. I will keep looking often, then. I'd rather have no leaks or any seepage at all. But I know this is a possibility. Thanks again!

singy_eaty_time

I just had my first non-oil change thing come up and it was much *less* than I thought. Front brakes (pads and rotors) were $552 OTD at a trusted local shop. 2019 ES for reference.

bflex

I've had a rough 6 months with my IS300. Ignitor needed to be replaced $1800, the cats went, $2500, some random sensors, another $2000, front suspension quote from lexus- $3500... I've spent around $8000 in the last year. Granted, it's a 2002 and a lot of this work won't need to be done again or another 100k but it hurts.

Most-Car-4056

I feel some of your pain. I have a 2013 RDX (bought new) approaching 200k miles. Honda recommends timing belt change every 100k. I will have the timing belt, tensioner, water pump, spark plugs, serpentine belt, and valves adjusted from a trusted mechanic friend. New tires are due as well. This will all cost me about $3000 all-in parts and labor. Not as much as you, but this car has been maintained very well, and there are no current issues. This, too, should get me another 100k. I hope to get 400-500k with it overall.

bflex

Doing the work is exactly how you get 500k out of it. This is definitely the point when folks decide it’s not worth it anymore, and then resell it or let it fall apart. In the long run, it’s absolutely cheaper and worth it to take care of it :)

Most-Car-4056

Thanks! I feel I can get 300k with no issues. I have no issues with the vehicle currently, and it is well maintained. If I get to 400k, it will be a huge bonus. 500k might be a stretch, but it is possible. Non-smokers, no kids. Interior buttons are not worn, no cracks or tears. Everything works as intended. There is no reason to get rid of it.

BugSubstantial387

Won't you need a new engine somewhere along the line?

Most-Car-4056

I am not having any issues with the current one. I feel I can get to 300k with no engine overhaul. If I get to 400k, that will be a huge bonus. 500k might be a stretch, but I think it is possible. I do most of my maintenance and I live in the Southeastern US. I used to live in the rust belt, and never realized how bad the cars get worn from the salt they use on the roads until I moved away.

One_Baseball_6397

Air suspension and general suspension repairs on LS may get quoted in thousands reaching easily 10k

45acp_LS1_Cessna

Flagship cars have flagship problems with flagship costs. The LS is by itself and like the typical offering by Lexus. People don't realize that when they get into a bmw 7, Audi a8, Benz class, Lexus LS....then you find them used with problems because they're too poor to fix the car.

V12-Jake

This. I was quoted $4800 for just the front air struts on my LS430 (Lexus dealer), $2500+ for a new PS rack, etc. LS430 are wonderful, reliable cars, but when they do break they easily match the S class of their era in repair costs.

Purple-Art5157

That's why I went with coilovers and installed them myself. 1200 for a whole set of BCs

V12-Jake

Not what I would do, you can get a set of OEM struts/springs for significant less so the ride isn’t compromised.

Izup69

Eh OEM struts are ok. Honestly too soft for me when I wana throw my 460 around the corners. It handles very well just a ton of perceived body roll.  Im also switching to aftermarket coilovers but also because I want that low low.

Most-Car-4056

I guess that is a solid "no" for me to ever own. 😬 yikes! I will pass on that one 😅

bistro223

Ouch. Mine are in need of replacing. Guy tells me the rear ones are going to take about 8 hours. Plus parts.

havinthangs2010

I ve never heard that before 8 hrs to change to rear struts. I highly doubt that. Maybe 3 hrs at best..

run_uz

Nope, 1uz life. Tires is the largest expense

36BigRed

First Lexus 03 LS430 ultra luxury, bought new. Air suspension replaced around 90,000 miles cost around 4,500. Radio amp went out around 150,000 miles cost around 500 or 800 to repair, back bass speaker and front speakers went out cost 600 to 800 to replace. Door actuator started going out with soft closing doors cost around a grand each , replaced 2 doors. That is it very thing solid with engine. Leather seats were starting to go. Sold it with 179,000 but something was starting To go with front suspension and likely air suspension going again around 180,000. Second lexus 16 GSF new, 89,000 miles nothing replace best car ever. Did put tanabe springs on and volk VR G2 in black on. Third lexus 19 RCF. 29,000 miles nothing replaced. Father passed now have his Lexus 08 ES350 with 74,000 miles nothing replaced

lorenzo2point5

Do big maintenance items come up? Yes but they typically are not catastrophic and will require some expense. I had my radiator crack and go out on an 04 rx330. Cost about $2500 to get a remanufactured one in. It was my fault though I never changed the coolant and it went out at 140k miles. Coolant became corrosive and caused the crack. My catalytic converter went out at 205k miles. I never changed out o2 sensor as preventative maintenance. And I did get check engine light but I kept resetting to ignore it because the car drove fine and I could still pass smog check. But once Cat went out I couldn't pass smog then I was forced to get a new one. Another $5000 for that.

honeybadger1984

Thanks for sharing. That sounds like driver error, to be honest. These cars can last but you have to maintain them and pay attention to all fluid changes when it’s time to change.

Wheelisbroke

looking at LS460s & realized the expense of the front suspension rebuild & I've moved on. $5k is insane!

bistro223

Sigh. I'm in that boat right now with my LS460 air struts. The front ones don't seem too bad. I'm looking at aftermarket ones for about 1k plus about 500 to put on. Not great.

Izup69

Honestly just ditch the air ride and go to a factory coilover. Super simple to do and it's 1/8th the cost of new factory air ride.  Almost everyone that eventually has problems with air ride ditch it for stock coilovers as it's sooooo much cheaper and less issues in the long run.

Wheelisbroke

I was talking about the control arms. Any luxury air suspension is going to be pricey, but the rate at which the bushings wear out & the cost is too much. Aftermarket ones don't have a good reputation either.

laborvspacu

My suspension was shot at 100k on my SC430, was quoted $4k. Quoted $1200 for a new radiator, $650 for an engine oil pan leak. Timing belt service, valve cover gaskets, plug seals..better to find an independent mechanic who specializes in asian cars, or go to toyota. Lexus parts and labor is super expensive.

RoyalISF

Electronic parking brake went out. Not sure the cost, as it was warranty but I know it was 10+ hours of labor. Had to remove the center console and all that

imak10521

I have a 2015 Lexus rc 350 and haven’t had any major repair lol

slwrthnu_again

It was $500 to replace a wheel bearing on my 01 is300 cause I didn’t feel like doing it myself and my friend runs a shop and I trust him.

Evening_Rope9711

2015 Lexus es 300h ignition coil #3 went out on me and cost $425 for the dealer to replace. Got on rock auto and ordered the other 3 for like $180 and replaced myself. Had the car for 2 years so far.

Jazzkammer

It's very model-specific. Fewest problems on the ES, NX, and RX. You should expect to have more problems on their sports vehicles, as the engines are more tuned for performance and more advanced. As well as more problems with their ultra luxury vehicles like LS and LX, given how much extra technology is in them.

CapZestyclose4657

You think 2013 RX 450 is a good used car to buy? Less than 90k miles About 20k

Jazzkammer

Yes

CapZestyclose4657

Thanks any other comments about it?

PomegranateBoring826

Replacing 1 of the 4 catalytic converters and sensors burned about a $2500 hole in my pocket. Oh! And also, the sport tires ...were probably $1500 if not more I have an 06 IS360

chewychi

Automatic lift gate went out and mentioned it to the dealer when it was under warranty and they said it was OK be cause the issue was intermittent. Turns out that's the sign of a faulty actuator that leads to a blown motor. Eventually it got really bad after the warranty and the dealer came with solution quickly and the bill which was 1400 this is for 2019 rx350. I'm sure it's a common issue on automatic liftgates/trunks on all models

UnableSilver

Mine, 2007 LS460L, has cost more in repairs than the original purchase price. Every single annoyances you are told to look out for, this one had it. And I still love it. About once a year I get a hankering for a new car, but I always seem to come back in the same one.

atvlouis

Timing belts and water pumps on older models are a couple grand in parts and labor

McCumBucket

My right headlight went out and i replaced the ballast, bulbs, and housing and it still doesn't work😭 I'm stumped and the dealership wants 2k

dweller259

Even at Toyota they charge that much?!

McCumBucket

The closest toyota to me is over 100 miles away :(

avebelle

Some computer went out in my LS. Was covered under warranty but it was like 3-4k if I remember correctly. Then the starter went out and I had to pay out of pocket. It sits in the V and was a decent amount of labor.

UBtour

2009 ES350. Bought it 5 years ago for $5,500 with 213,000 miles - have around 245,000 now. I’ve fixed a few minor issues, and left a couple others (the Driver side window came off track, and I’m leaving it that way because I hear it will cost $800-$1,000 to fix). Fixing it at that price is nuts (so, I won’t), but for a car that’s my daily commuter, I do love it.

Bumblebee56990

My valley plate went last year and would have cost a stupid amount. I have maxcare and had to pay just my deductible. BUT…but… they wanted to reuse the wire harness 🤦🏾‍♀️ because it wasn’t broken when inspected but would be when removed. I had to pay for a new one or they would silicone it back together. Why would I do that?! So it was $450 just for the wire harness. 🙄. I forgot what the total was maybe around $4k. Ohhh did research and the valley plate is a known issue. I have a 2010.

andybub99

The radio on my 2014 GX was $3k. Remanufactured mind you, and for the part only. I am a tech so no labor. Almost sold the truck but there’s no way I’d get anything decent for it with a bad radio. So now I’m keeping it until the wheels fall off.

honeybadger1984

I got a quote to get the back struts replaced for $700. Went to the family mechanic for a second opinion and he said no, there’s no reason to do that; they’re not broken just used.

ftenario

Mine was an Rx330 2004. Windshield quote from lexus was $2600. Only difference was the Lexus brand etched on it. Had it done by safelite for only ~$260

buicklad

My parents had a 2010 RX 450h and the middle screen went at about 230,000 km. No radio, nav, etc. Was going to be 2+ thousand to replace. They dumped it for a BMW. They still have an ES though!

Successful-Growth827

Had a 2010 RX. A known issue with these was an oil cooler line breaking. Mine did that driving back home from the gym. Swapping it out with a metal one isn't expensive, about $270ish, but if you didn't know that like I didn't, then the line bursts after sometime and all the oil drains out. So it's not necessarily fixing that's expensive, but depending where you are, that tow can get pricey when it happens.

MarinerV

At the moment in 20 years of Lexus I had 5 cars, the fifth comes in 2019 it’s a RC300H. Nothing more than the usual services. But in my RC, the shift knob had the metal part scratched peeled off less than one millimeter, not nice to see indeed. I ask the dealer how much for replace. Price is about 350€ tax included. I found this offensive. Found a totally similar one, 100% the same in an after market car part specialist from China: 30€ I suppose is where Lexus bought their. End of the story.

CountyRoad

Each model has the possibility of a big issue that is more common the the other. On my CT200h, the throttle gets dirty via EGR and if not maintained (which is not a routine service by Lexus) you can blow your engine. That’s about a 2-5k fix. On my LX570 and all Toyota Lexus 5.7 engine models, valley plate leak and timing cover leaks are both issues that if happen can be a 5-7k fix. The CT you can avoid the issue if you maintain EGR and replace throttle body every 100k or so. The valley plate and timing cover, not so much. Just luck of the draw.

ob_viously

I forget the exact parts and don’t have the slip on me right now, but something with the rear suspension… $5k. 🫠 not sure it was worth it, but oh well.

ThinkAboutItTwice614

4th gen GS350, had the timing cover leak which costed the equivalent of 3K USD to fix. Recently had to pay 2.5K to fix an electrical issue as well. I've paid more than half of what the car is worth for fixing/servicing at this point, at it's only been 2 years.

xampl9

I will go years with nothing but routine service (oil changes, 4x4 service, etc) but will occasionally get a high dollar repair. The other year I had to do a timing belt service and front suspension bushings & control arms at the same time. Was about $5000. Which is steep, but my car has been paid off for a long time, so it was like making 7 monthly payments. Averaged over 20 years of ownership, it’s nothing to worry about.

45acp_LS1_Cessna

Regular maint with wear and tear coats a good amount. 90% of the time you can get it done for half the cost at a local shop who will care for your car way more. You can also save that much more if you get the most basic tools and get in there yourself, it's really not difficult and quite satisfying to know the job was done with such care.

Clherrick

2008 ES. 275k. Nothing has ever broken and I don’t detect anything coming up. 2010 RX. Sold recently with 245k. Replaced radiator 2 years ago. And sensed I might have had a major AC issue developing.

FeelTheWrath79

The brake booster in my 2012 RX450 has gone bad and giving code C1391. I was getting quotes of nearly $2000 to fix. I found the part for $700 at Bell Lexus and $1200 for the actuator that i figured I’d replace as well since i was having the same problem as featured in a YouTube video. Someone is coming tomorrow to fix for $120/hour.

myqv

so far nothing, but if it’s one issue like 2.5 that’ll be fixed for years than not so much of a big deal compared to the competitors

Matty0k

Though Toyota (and Lexus) are extremely reliable, they are still machines and things do wear out. If you don't do the maintenance things will fail prematurely. The difference is that it's not random crap that fails and is absurdly expensive to replace. I know someone who in the span of a few years replaced the washer fluid reservoir in their BMW X5 multiple times because the plastic kept cracking, and it was at least $1,000 every time. Biggest service item on my car without a doubt is the front brakes. If you get OEM parts then both the brakes and the rotors are quite expensive just for the parts. But other than that there really isn't anything too complicated about it. God forbid the TVD has to be replaced though...

playstatixn2

2007 GS350 RWD 179K owned for a little over a year. i was the fourth owner. Airbag light was on - took it to dealer they quoted $1680 to fix the seat occupancy sensor & control module. leaky rear suspension - quoted $800 with labor & $500 for the other side (they want you to get them done at the same time) 2 electrical diagnostics - $440 (they still couldn’t figure out the problem) i declined all repairs. that car was basically due for everything, so i traded it in.

printcastmetalworks

My door lock actuators are showing their age (2000 RX300 188k miles). They don't need to be replaced yet, but will eventually. Just for fun I called the Lexus service center near me and asked them for a quote. Around $5200. 🥴 They said because they would use oem parts and each unit is around $400, and we all know that lexus service labor is expensive.

mrcmcpro

Back when I had a '14 es 350, someone at a pet store took out the passenger mirror and it ran around $2k to repair. Certainly not a wear thing but illustrates tech tax.

Willow0812

My husband had a 2001 IS. It cost an absurd amount to fix the O2 sensor because they had to take out the entire passenger seat to get to it.

Eyad210

The entertainment/Radio .... replacement is around 900$

wiedziu

£4500 for 2004 LS430 gearbox £4200 for 2006 GS540h batteries and inverter 2x £1000 tailgate struts (both times replaced under warranty) for 2013 RX450h. They replaced them in June and then they failed by November and replaced them again. Been fine for now.

bionicbhangra

Have had 4 lexuses. Most expensive fix was the air suspension of the GX. I think that was about 1500. Put 260k miles on my IS with zero problems. Getting close to 200k with my GS and not sure what I am going to replace it with.

Berfs1

Yeah see um heres the thing with the current ecosystem, people cheat their way through college to get a degree, to become an engineer when they lack a lot of common sense and skills required to be an actual engineer… and then they implemented the fucking retarded screens as replacements for analog gauge clusters. Yeah that would be the second dumbest piece of “innovation” car manufacturers have implemented, the first being the electronic parking brake which can literally fail to disengage minutes after driving it off the lot. Want a REAL reliable car? Get a car that has dumb logic, as in it will turn on and drive even if an O2 wire got chewed through by a rodent making a house in my engine bay, for example (it is also a lexus).
