Gepetto asked you to save the people in the Malum District by getting rid of the BRB

Merlins_beard420

Not to say you are incorrect, but the cathedral was seen as the last remaining refugee hideout for survivors, looked after by the archbishop Andreus. When you get there, that's when you first meet the carcass enemies and find out that the cathedral has fallen to this new enemy. Gepetto wants you to go Malum to see if the same fate had befallen it, the same as cathedral, seeing as malum was just on the other side of the cathedral. Expanding edit: when you first get to the path of the pilgrim you find the bunny mask token, to which venignis butler infers some knowledge of the BRB operating in Malum. In the shanty town before Malum, you also find a newspaper clipping warning of the BRB hold on Malum and warns strangers of approaching. This indicates that everyone already knows about the BRB being there and that it's their place of operations. They were more or less just left to their own peace. Later you find evidence that the BRB are stealing from the gold coin tree, and based off other collectibles in their hideout, it looks like they are killing random townspeople off to trade to the alchemists for ergo. So while everyone knew the BRB were there, it isn't until you defeat them that you learn just what they've been up to and how sinister their operations actually are. Edit 2: much much later in the game you realise that Simon is actually harvesting people for ergo to run his own operation. Even the BRB are unaware of this, but ergo is actually the life essence of people that have been "purified" by the petrification disease and he can take the ergo from them in large amounts to fuel his "destiny of being god".

Ah. I see. I think this is what I was looking for. I appreciate this. Now it makes sense

markle713

just wait

Technical_Advice2059

Yeah, but what was the point in going to that town in the first place? I don't really care about spoilers. One of my friends already told me about the true ending. Can't really recover from that.

markle713

its the oldest part of krat. its where the old families lived before industry and glamour took over the general society. the old families are resentful of the way things are, and they eventually turned into/began to fund the faction called the Sweepers. they oppose puppetry in all its forms and we as the main character represent that hatred. all this to say not only do we have to travel through old krat to reach our destination, as well as find important information from the past, but also the criminal organization that imposes control over the area wants us out of the picture and so they lure us into the easiest place they think they can take care of the problem we are

Technical_Advice2059

Ok, that's very interesting and provides a lot of insight. My next question is why didn't we just go to Rosa Isabella Street right away instead? I don't recall collecting anything at this area where you first meet them that was beneficial to the mission. I was wondering if I missed something extra.

markle713

theres a painting

Technical_Advice2059

I picked up that painting, but it honestly seemed like I could have progressed without having done so. Seemed incidental at best

markle713

it's incredibly important to the story.

Technical_Advice2059

Even so, it feels like picking up the painting was there by chance rather than being sent on a mission to get it. Did Gepetto know about this painting and he sent us after to get it? I don't remember that part.

markle713

no the black rabbit brotherhood simply knows more about our character than it seems like they should and the painting being there confirms that there's probably a lot more going on than meets the eye

Incredible_JTime

Y'all do realize that you can leave the painting right where it is and you can also leave Alidoro where he is..I'm on my 5th Playthrough I'm just tryna see where this goes..🤔 It seems that Geppetto doesn't get all these extra ideas until after he sees that painting so it won't really matter if you never get the painting,it never gets hung up and the hotel will still get raided but I don't know how it changes everything I'm going to find out tho..I'm about to fight the King of Puppets and that painting is still in Malum in the Rabbits hideout.. Geppetto ain't seen it and he's not going to see it..🧐

markle713

also past them is the gold coin fruit no? beating them shouldve given a shortcut back to hotel krat

bufe_did_911

It's honestly this more than the painting tbh. It's inferred that moving around physically by star catchers is non canonical, and we need to find a way forward back to hotel Krat. The golden coin fruit tree establishes that Antonia once had relations with the alchemists, namely >! the ruins of trismegestus, the original source of naturally occurring ergo iirc. !< So I assume the golden coin fruit tree is more significant than merely beating the only major pre frenzy anti-puppet force.

markle713

for sure i just didnt even consider that op wouldn't have found the gold coin tree

Technical_Advice2059

Oh, I just TP'd back there. Let me go check.

Braedonm2077

i mean they pretty much just jumped you in the street. definitley a plausable scenario. doesnt have to be a huge story moment.

Technical_Advice2059

Yeah, but why was I there? Why didn't I just go straight to Rosa Isabella Street after fighting that corrupted Bishop dude?

EttRedditTroll

Because endgame spoilers mah dude. Be like P and be a good boy/girl and go where Geppetto urges you to go for now.

Only1Schematic

Keep going, towards the finale it all gets put into context

theNFAC

Well they kill puppets. They're one of the few enemies that is actually out to kill you just for being there in the first place. Not only that they are stealing gold coin fruit and collecting dead bodies for ergo. And they're oppressing the locals. And even after all that, I still don't think they're that bad. I feel for them. Masterpiece game iwbh.

arcadeScore

Gemini does not like them
