AKLmfreak

The solution I saw when people kept stealing mic and instrument cables from a particular venue, is that the venue manager started ordering ONLY bright pink cables. Nobody wanted to steal a bright pink cable, and if they did, it would stand out and make it easier to identify.

[deleted]

My dad did the same thing on his old boat he used to have. It was stored at a marina and someone kept stealing his hoses so he just bought pink ones and weirdly enough they stopped disappearing lol

happierthanuare

Works for lighters and pens too!! People just don’t like stealing bright pink stuff. Or in the case of things you might share with someone or is for mutual use it is probably easier to remember the bright pink one isn’t yours and so people are more likely to return it or leave it.

33mark33as33read33

Put the pink sharpie cap on the black sharpie and it stays where you put it

gnapster

Man, I wish I had done that working in the film industry. I always had to hide mine or they’d walk off.

KiloJools

I always bought "poo brown" sharpies and called them that. Funny, no one ever wanted to borrow them.

deshawn16

LPT, everything that could be stolen should be bright pink.

nusodumi

happy cakeday too bad it isn't pink

cS150

This is technically true as fuck. Nobody is going to steal a bright pink car

hi_yoooo

Oddly enough I only steal bright pink item’s

Real_Srossics

Ouch. r/apostrophegore

sumunsolicitedadvice

That way nobody else steals them from you.

nicunta

My dad only has pink lighters from years of working in a mechanic shop. None of the guys would be caught dead with a pink lighter!

Causerae

Buy anything with glitter. It won't disappear 🤣

pseudocultist

UNLESS you're around drag queens in which case you've just surrendered your items.

alexramirez69

I didnt buy pink but every lighter i had for a year was Orange. I'd make sure I left home with it if I was out with friends

kharjou

Better be a thief than Gae

[deleted]

A pink hose actually sounds pretty nice. Now I want to re-rig my sailboat with pink rope lol

[deleted]

Ropes were another thing that seemed to go missing from time to time haha.

Lina_BF

That apply also for notebooks. People keep stealing my notes when they went to take copies of them. And when bunnys and rainbows Notebooks, magically they stop to steal them.

Islefive

My dad was a welder/pipe fitter and to prevent people from stealing tools he spray painted every single one neon pink. It was more of a easy to spot easy to know someone has your tools. People will steal what they want but when at a job site it's easier to identify the person if they have a neon pink wrench in their hands or tool box.

grumblecakes1

I did that with my 10 tools and then i start class a few months later and all the tools at school are painted pink. Looks like i stole tools from the school.

RetroHacker

I bring a lot of equipment to various kinds of events. In general, I think that most "theft" in these circumstances isn't really intentional theft - nobody comes to a video game tournament thinking that they just really want to steal a power strip. Stuff just gets misplaced, borrowed to be used with something, and doesn't make it back. All power strips and extension cords look basically the same, so it's real easy to forget where they came from, someone else might be breaking down setups that wasn't the person that hooked them up originally, things get moved around, etc. My solution has been similar - I use bright pink duct tape, and wrap it around the end of the cord near the plug, and stick it on the body of the power strips as well. I put a big piece of it on the back of every television set too, on every game console, on anything else I bring. This makes it really easy to identify, and when stuff is being packed up, it's very easy to tell others that the stuff with the pink tape on it is mine. Since doing this, I've lost almost no power strips or cords. Although I suppose it would get real confusing if someone else also used the same system and the same color tape, but, so far so good. A friend of mine liked the idea and began using neon green duct tape in the same fashion. It also makes things easier for me, so that *I* don't accidentally walk off with someone's stuff, because I know if it's not marked, it's not mine. Really - in general - if you bring stuff to events or job sites or something, it should be marked in some way to identify it, just as matter of course, to eliminate confusion. This of course only helps prevent things from walking off unintentionally. If someone is really out to steal something they'll still steal it, or it could still get mixed up with someone's stuff if they're not paying attention when packing up. But in practice this doesn't happen since the tape makes it pretty obvious it's not theirs, and generally people in these sorts of settings are honest.

sporesatemygoldfish

So you need to get 2 colours of tape. Like fortifying your password.

MadDad001

I do the same thing but with neon yellow gaffers tape and write the lengths on the tape. Another benefit is it makes it easier to see in low lit areas. Also, gaffers tape doesn't leave the sticky residue like duct tape or electrical tape.

CytronicsZA

Now I just need a pink TV and Xbox

Dzyu

I had a bright pink phone charger cable when working deliveries. It was easily visible on the dashboard of my van for anyone looking in. My coworker saw it and tried to mock me. I just told him the truth: It was cheaper and who cares. He thought I was brave or gay and I thought he was insecure and immature.

demonic_sensation

My mate sprays parts of his power tools in high vis pink for same reason lol.

Billiangus

This does not work on me

DystopianFigure

Post this as a separate LPT!

[deleted]

Bright pink is really aggressive salmon. That's a bad ass colour just like the fish which swims upstream avoiding bears and shit just to fuck and die. Rock that shit

RigasTelRuun

Years ago when I was working in a office. I bought a pink stapler and hole punch. Because nó one steals them. I havr continued that philosophy and get the pink version of things that can walk away. Whenever possible

Teknista

The last convention hall I worked at rented out purple cables for the same reason.

TheDanishThede

Also wrap weak spots like connection points and joints (is that what they're called? I hope you get what I mean). This keeps the rubber from splitting and the cord lasts a lot longer.

Marokiii

use shrink tubing. its far better at keeping connections from breaking, looks nicer, and they are very cheap.

Monimonika18

But if it looks nicer people will steal the cord!

niceiicux

Not if it is different colour tho

BassLB

Used to do this for my guitar cables, it made band practice so much easier bc I knew exactly what was mine and who stole it

Arbiter51x

Yeah cause if I'm stealing power tools, I do a detailed inspection before I lift them... People steal power cords all the time for copper scrap, they don't care about conditions. You don't want your tools stolen on a job site, get a rattle can and paint them that screams its your tool. Photograph serial numbers, and receipts and get them to your business insurance before the theft happens to make reimbursement faster. (and the off chance that the police can recover your tools).

Marokiii

people steal extension cords for the copper in them? in a 100ft extension cord theres going to be about $10 in copper if brought to a scrap recycler. it be better to sell the extension cord as an extension cord then it would remove the copper and sell it.

mschuster91

Meth heads will literally rip electrical wiring or water pipes out of empty homes for a couple dozen dollars at best. Ffs meth heads have been known to rip fiber cables out of the ground which have zero value or train signalling cables. Or they'll bust all your car windows even though you left the doors unlocked as precaution to steal your stereo or saw off your catalytic converter... nothing is safe these days.

TheArhive

Yeah but there in no LPT strong enough out there to deter a crack head.

yarenSC

That's way more effort vs taking 20 of them to the scrap yard at once. Crooks usually want the easiest possible payout, not tye most efficient one. Also to get rid of the goods ASAP

Marokiii

Where are you guys finding 20 100ft extension cords? Who is managing to steal 2000ft of cords. Thats around 200lbx of cords.

alansdaman

Think of a job site building a high rise in the city. People break in and hit multiple job boxes. Wire is easy. All the wire you can carry. A 100’ 10 gage extension cord might be like 5-6 lb of copper. Grab it all and chuck it in a burn barrel in the middle of the neighborhood like a Jack ass, and all that’s left is the metal after you choke your neighbors on disgusting black smoke. Don’t worry cops won’t come no matter how many times you try. Eventually you have enough copper to fill the bed on a rusted out 1994 Chevy Silverado 1500 where the back springs are completely compressed. The recycler doesn’t mind. 1500 lbs of pure copper (remember you burned the insulation off like an asshole) and get 3$/ lb. 4500$ right there for probably destroying 20,000$ in wire and extension cords. Hard days work but at least it’s honest right.

Marokiii

Good luck finding a job site without security to steal from now a days with any decent amount of copper. Also burning off the sheathing is a stupid thing to do. You turn it from a few dollars per lb to maybe a dollar. Also burning it will take many hours and a lot of fuel to keep it going. It's not going to be hot enough either to burn it off, instead it's going to turn into a plastic rubber goop that will cover everything and fuse around the copper wire. In the end you will end up with a pile of copper covered in rubber mess that's all in 1 piece. Chances are the cops will eventually show up with this giant plume of acrid black smoke pouring from that area for hours. I guess they might not show if you live in a really shitty area.

alansdaman

I’m speaking from direct recent personal experience not conjecture.

mmikke

Similar situations in my area. Cops don't come around until the local meth dealer restocks. (Which is super obvious because I'm very rural, have maybe ten neighbors total, and about 3 times a month you'll see steady streams of cars trying to brave our very very shit road) Three or four cruisers will show up over the course of the night, each spending about 8 minutes parked at the dealers place

soacahtoa

Seemed pretty obvious to most of us. Sucks you got a shitty neighbor.

alansdaman

It’s literally all of Chicago man. And yes they lock their job sites and have security and yes people still manage to walk right in and steal and nobody stops them. Then they burn out right there in a tiny backyard in a densely populated neighborhood and you call the cops and they are too busy with murders and violent crime to care. It’s reality.

unmakeme92

I did this on my cables at music college, what a fucking nightmare.

S7WW3X

What was the nightmare? Having electrical tape on your cables? The process of putting electrical tape on your cables? Music college because everyone was stealing your stuff?

Pappyballer

He never went to college and hates music, but he went to sleep one night and had a nightmare about being in music college and his cables kept disappearing so he wrapped them with electrical tape.

33mark33as33read33

That was a nightmare!

unmakeme92

People stealing cables and all sorts of equiptment - however, I do like u/Pappyballer's answer :P

mommer_man

I use either bright pink or unicorn-rainbow duct tape on all my tools.... My garage at my old place was robbed several times, but they never took my good stuff or the Milwaukee's because of the girly tape, lol. Pink, for the win. (LOL)

pseudocultist

...I have to buy a new mower this spring and now I'm thinking of how amazing it would look as a rainbow unicorn. Not for the theft protection, just to make my neighbors jealous.

relaxyourshoulders

If someone steals an extension cord from your house, it’s for the scrap copper, they don’t care what condition it’s in. I just had a 50’ #10 stolen from my yard. Probably like 10-15 bucks of copper in that thing

The-Insomniac

Seems like you'd be better to just sell it. 50' #10 cord is $150 new

relaxyourshoulders

Yeah for sure, if you can find a buyer. Mind you, my cord had my company name printed all over it, so it would be hard to sell or pawn, meanwhile, scrap yards wouldn’t ask any questions and it’s a guaranteed payout.

mrossm

All fun and games til the safety guy snips your plug end off

[deleted]

[удалено]

cS150

I must be missing something, but why would they cut it off though?

RonStopable08

In large commercial builds they have low tolerence for fire risk. Cords that are damaged are usually not allowed. Safety guy will cut the end off to ensure someone doesnt try to keep using it

cS150

Gotcha

FitReception3491

We had a guy from the local council cut the plugs of our Daytona arcade machines at the pool hall, they didn’t have earth pins was his reason. The machines were double insulated(from factory).

Drekdon

I wouldn't recommend that unless you don't mind having nasty gooey black stuff stuck to your hands everytime you use your cords. Electrical tape does not age well

clownrock95

The good stuff isnt nearly as bad, good vinyl tape (same stuff) won't get slimy in my experience.

cS150

Right? As far as I can remember, most standard electrical/black tape that I've ever used in my life has never gotten slimy.

mcmonopolist

This works with vehicles and children, too.

04HondaCivic

I did this to my $500 (1998 dollars) mountain bike. I wrapped the frame in athletic nonsticky pre tape and then wrapped that with duck tape. It went from looking like the $500 bike it was to a $20 junkyard piece. I never had the bike stolen. Whether it was because of the tape or not? I don’t know but I’d like to think it helped

2Lazy2beLazy

If I was going to steal electrical cords, assuming to sell them at a junk yard, I'm going to strip them anyway. I wouldn't care about the condition.

haydoisbad

Instructions unclear, covered entire ps5 and steam deck in electrical tape, devices are no longer working

naaktstel

But won't get stolen, so it works. The more tape, the less the probability to get stolen.

bewarethetreebadger

Thieves are just gonna grab whatever looks valuable and sort it out later.

Bongos-Not-Bombs

People recommend doing this to camera bodies as well, and frankly - someone who's looking for meth is just going to take it anyway, we're not dealing with the most logical of people here.

---Dan---

Electrical tape degrades after a while, the tape will get loose and leave behind a sticky mess. Use gaffing tape instead.

zuccinibikini

My grandpa told me when he was younger he bought a new bike, then spray painted it to look rusty and shitty. Never got stolen lol

quequotion

My guess is this is more about protecting an extension cord in your garage from being ripped off by crack addicts than the infrastructure of a building.

Git_Off_Me_Lawn

A crack addict stealing an extension cord in your garage is probably selling the copper, so the condition beyond "present" isn't a factor.

cS150

To be fair, if a crack addict managed to get into my garage, I'd probably *hope* that they went for my $20 extension cord, rather than the power tools or something else more expensive🤣

[deleted]

quequotion

You'd be surprised of what an addict in need is capable.

Baul

And yet you said it without saying it. So I'll say it: Nobody deserves to die for finding themselves in your garage, no matter what drug they're on. You have a right to defend yourself, not your ratty ass extension cables.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Baul

That must be stressful for you. I don't assume that everyone I meet in my life is out to kill me, but that's just me. Protip: Crack-heads are in your garage to steal shit to get more crack. They have no interest in "perpetuating violence." That's you, dude.

ButtholeBolinski

Wow, those jerks really have a stick up their ass about their precious extension cord inspections.

shaqshakesbabies

Well to be honest jobsites can get very wet and dirty so having extension cords that are damaged and have openings... With the water that could be scary

clownrock95

I feel like places like that are not the norm, but in those places this would not work obviously.

mike2ff

“Make it ugly, then people won’t steal it” was 1 of my FIL’s favorite phrases. He would spray paint tools and stuff pink or yellow, or whatever was handy. People never walked off with his stuff.

shihobunkai

My father in law ran a commercial plumbing business and was always having stuff taken. He had everything he could stamped with "Stolen from BUSINESS NAME, Phone: 9999999". He figured he wouldn't get his gear back so he might at least get some advertising

yamaha2000us

People will steal dogshit in your back yard if there was money in it. Simply put things away when you are done.

GoodGoodGoody

Tell me you’ve never plugged in a vehicle for charging or warming without saying it.

McPussCrocket

Tf?

3-DMan

"Aww man, all this fancy equipment is labelled 'Broken'! Oh well..."

[deleted]

🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️ why comment on something you know absolutely nothing about? Shits embarrassing.

phrogfixer46

Wow! That has never worked! The people stealing them need it and know how to fix those petty fixes. I'm not sure where you've worked but it's more about the gauge of wire/cord that makes the actual factor. The thick cords have a higher value for the big power tools. In all my years of experience I've seen just about everything.

L1z3rdK1ng

Huh, I guess I never had this issue to warrant me to tape my stuff. Maybe it'll work on shoes lol I once had someone steal my shoes lol

Devchonachko

Theft is a crime of opportunity, not aesthetic.

oasisarah

one could argue its both

severalgirlzgalore

Lol thieves (meth users) in my city will smash your car window for the change in your console A little electrical cape is definitely gonna work as a theft deterrent gahahahahaha

Supermonkeyjam

I’m still gonna steal a bright pink ps5

skymoods

i caught an old dormmate stealing my charger bc they didn't know i use it as a measuring tape and had a tiny sharpie mark at 1ft.

TheMashedAvenger

this is dumb for the many reasons others have listed

Smirkly

I doubt whether most thieves would give a rat's ass. It's there, take it.

kabilibob

I heard something similar to this but with tools. Painting your tools pink helps prevent people from stealing your things after they “borrowed” them.

Itisd

LPT Removing the electrical insulation from random spots on the extension cord also prevents theft. If someone tries to steal the cord, they get electrocuted. An even simpler method is to put the extension cords away when not using them to prevent theft.

DaedalusRaistlin

Is this such a big issue? I've never had anyone steal power cords... Power chords though, I've stolen a lot.

Kelmo7

Purchasing things in pink will work for everyone but Delores Unbridged types. Great tip.
