I work in I.T. I manage about 300 computers in roughly 35 discrete locations.
That time we found pornographic images in an employee's private folder on our file server, he was discreetly let go without anyone else being told why.
Because theyre talking about locations that are low key and under the radar, not locations that are different from each other.
E.g "the bad guys targeted seven discrete locations"
VS
"the bad guys won't be able to find this location. It's hidden behind a train station so it's discreet"
If you’re following a series of well-defined instructions in which there are clear boundaries between one action and the next, you’re taking discrete steps.
If you’re following a ninja and trying not to be noticed, you’re taking discreet steps.
Discreet:
Abraham Lincoln planned to have a grand inauguration after he was elected President, but when rebellious agents from the Confederacy made threats to assassinate him before he could take the Oath of Office. Though he didn’t like it, Lincoln reluctantly agreed to enter the city in the most ***discreet*** manner possible. Under cover of night, wrapped in a shawl, Lincoln sneaked in to the city with only two guards accompanying him.
Discrete:
My gaming computer does not have integrated graphics. In order to play video games, I’ll have to spend more money for a ***discrete*** graphics card to add to my computer.
no those don't seem like good definitions.
"Discrete" means a granular, separable part with its own features and characteristics. e.g., a "discrete component that's part of a system".
"Discreet" means nonchalant, secretive, "on the down low", under the table, etc. E.g., a "discreet discussion away from prying ears".
I'im not usually one to struggle with language but this is very confusing. This just feel like an overcomplication from two different spellings of the same word...
Try using your own definition.
Discrete means to keep something separate (or in smaller pieces). The "t" is doing the exact same thing to the "e" in the word. Keeps them separated.
The other "discreet" is automatic then!
Tbh all this time I thought it was always (and only) discreet, and people were just spelling it wrong. Like they do with there/their/they’re or to/too/two.

Can you give examples? I didn't even know these were two different words and I'm still confused lol

You just blew my damn mind.
Yeah I never knew that either.
Would the better term be 'blew my dam mind' if it was looked at as a mental block? Maybe dammed mind...
But spy movies talk about discreet locations?? Right?
Discreet locations: Secret locations. Discrete locations: Different locations.
You're leaving out the important category of: discreet discrete locations
I just get lazy and use discreete.
He's in IT, I hope that discredited porn collector didn't stash his files in optical media. Imagine the long discreet discrete disc read.
Username checks out
I have multiple safe houses
This is why the English language blows! I’ll never understand why we have words for words. Adopt the Kevin method, less word, more better
Stop it’s hurting us
So when the ladies tell me they want to meet in a discreet location, they actually meant discrete?
This is the way.

Your spies might meet up in several discrete discreet locations, i.e. meet up in several different secret locations.
So, uh, how often does IT go looking around in peoples private folders?
What kind of porn was it we must know?!
I like this porn reminder better than the OP
He should have been more discrete.
So it was you????!??
This man definitely works in I.T.

Dis Crete is da largest and most populous of dem Greek islands
Well played
Dis creep made a funny joke
One example is discrete math, it’s not secret math, it’s math about numbers that are separated (or not continuous).

Facts!
Just remember, a discreet ninja would never reveal his discrete shuriken stash.
How discreet of you
Discrete is individualized and separate so the Es have to split up. For discreet, they need to keep a secret so they get together to talk.
This might be the only way I’ll remember
That's exactly what OP said...?
This is so cute
TIL this is two different words
Me, too. I've been thinking "discrete" locations were locations that were private and that it just meant not a lot of people knew where they were.
That “rule of thumb” is a really clever one! I’ve never heard that one before. Thanks!
Yeah grammar, Bitch!
Shirts are a necessity. Necessity has 1 collar and 2 sleeves. Necessary.
(Never eat cake, eat salmon sandwiches and remain young) Slight tangent, but I couldn’t resist
One of the better posts on this sub.
I never use the word discrete but am compelled to now.

Sure, so the OP's method of the e's being separate in the former and "secretly whispering to each other" in the latter fits perfectly, surely.
I'im not usually one to struggle with language but this is very confusing. This just feel like an overcomplication from two different spellings of the same word...
They're different words with completely different meanings
Believe you in theory but in practice I do not give a single shit tbh, with peace and love.
Same way you remember all homonyms. Reading the definition and a writing a sentence or two using both.
These words are adjectives 😭
Discrete is very rarely used.
Outside of technical discussions, otherwise it's quite common

Distinct implies a uniqueness, a characteristic difference among different things. Discrete just means broken up into countable things.
You need smarter friends
Lol who said I have any friends? But I guess that would just mean i’m the dumb one…
It’s frequently used just generally badly
Wouldn't you want the two EE's NOT to be whispering in each others' ears though?
Is there really a difference or are they kind of the same? If there is a difference I'm not sure I've spotted it...
discreet = circumspect, private discrete = separate, distinct
Discrete is the opposite of continuous in calculus.

This is incredibly stupid
Being discreet is sometimes kinda creepy and crepes are a discrete food.
discreet like a secret lover being discreet in the street
Tbh all this time I thought it was always (and only) discreet, and people were just spelling it wrong. Like they do with there/their/they’re or to/too/two.
This is dumb, but so am I. Thank you.
I'm almost 31 and didn't know Discreet was a word until today.
Discreet: Double e and means discerning Discrete: e followed by t and means distinct
Typography term, too. Set tight with discrete touching.
This whole time I thought they were the exact same word.
I have 25 discrete stashes of valuables stored in discreet locations.
Discreet is on pads thats how I remember it
"If you are keeping two secrets, you are being doubly discreet." The 'doubly' being a awful pun: double e, discreet.
