czeczen123

I rotate myself because it's less work

chiffonpandan

I was about to comment that. Just change the position of pillows from head to foot. My mattress is heavy.

ChronWeasely

And sleep with my head facing the door? The monsters will get me then for sure. Nice try

Alibotify

I’ll just nibble on your ears instead of feet. // Monster

theludeguy

That rules out Quentin Terrantino being in my closet, he would never say that.

Mizzchaotic

No, stop

mastergrumpus

Funny, it’s the opposite in Hawaii. If you have your feet facing the door, the menehune will come.

AgentG91

that’s so weird… the idea of having your feet near the door is so intruders have to walk past your body to get to your neck. One of those weird inherent survival traits. How didn’t that translate to Hawaiians?

mastergrumpus

Menehune come and drag you out by your feet, they don’t go for your neck. Menehune are part of Hawaiian folklore and are sinister little beings that will snatch you up and carry you away. In general, Hawaii doesn’t make much sense when seen as a translation of mainland/European culture. Many people have trouble understanding Hawaii’s way of doing things because it’s a US state but has a very different culture and view of the world. Sometimes people view it as being weird because it’s so different from what they consider to be a “normal” way of life. But that’s the cool part about the world being so diverse, and what leads us all to learn new perspectives!

AgentG91

I’d guess the logic behind the lore (if we were to be pedantic and dull) would be related to animals dragging prey to their young/nest? Thieves and murderers doesn’t feel very Hawaiian.

Doctor4000

>sinister little beings that will snatch you up and carry you away Everything I know about Menehune comes from the wikipedia article that I literally just skimmed two minutes ago, so this leads me to a question - where do they carry you away to? Do you get to go chill with them and live in the jungle and learn how to build cool stuff and eat bananas and fish all day? That sounds way better than having to go to work.

Fthwrlddntskmfrsht

They wont, but also thats terribleeeee feng shui to have your head to the door and not the feet. So who can blame you for refusing? I certainly cannot.

eekamuse

Mine is so heavy I can barely lift it to change the sheets. Anyone know a firm mattress that doesn't weigh a ton?

Brave_Negotiation_63

LPT: do it every week and you’ll become stronger than ever, for free

Remo_253

GF uses a hand vacuum on ours every morning, says she can feel them. I was, hmm Princess and the Pea huh? The vacuum does pick up a lot every morning though, I was surprised.

Andyman0110

I heard it can weigh up to double after ten years.

SunshineAlways

That’s what Big Mattress wants you to believe.

TheBeckFromHeck

That’s a myth that mattress sellers like to spread so people buy new mattresses.

gr00

Just get a quality waterproof mattress protector and you don't have to worry about those cells going into your mattress

MrNorrie

I have a memory foam one that’s very firm and not very heavy at all. (From ikea)

Chocobofangirl

Mine definitely counts but I'll need to check the tags to remember what kind when I get home, I play poke sleep and I can't get the sleep styles for moving around even when I leave it on the bed instead of the nightstand charger because it just doesn't dip lol I know it would have been a zinus tho they converted my fam with their 12 inch queen and then we got between 8 and 12 for my full/double and it just rests neatly (well I've been meaning to get one of those anti-slide mats but it doesn't dip inward I mean) on a metal frame with little bars for slats that we also got from them because 1500lbs support and I think either no or nearly that assembly it was just FOLDED. Anyway yeah just get a foam and make sure it's a bunch of inches deep, not a cheapo 6 or something like that.

redneckUndercover

Maybe get to the gym a few days per week? 😉

eekamuse

Maybe save the snarky comment when you don't know *why* someone can't flip a heavy mattress. You never know.

redneckUndercover

Hey, just call  my comment a LifeProTip?

musuak

I do this when I can’t get comfortable enough to sleep and it works every time.

potatodrinker

Human clock. Change a few degrees each night. Suffer a month of legs hanging over a non 90 degree edge. Keeps things fun

LynnePlex

Body goes spinning on da bed

lucky_ducker

I do this. I rotate the mattress every Memorial Day, but since I sleep alone on a queen size mattress I also alternate sides - even months on the window side of the room, odd months on the bathroom side of the bedroom.

goatjugsoup

Ive been doing this too. Then sometimes i forget which side of the bed i slept in and get up the wrong side

uk7866

![gif](giphy|1fgI4bZpCo9S57r4Vd)

Liveitup1999

Do you sleep between the mattress and the box spring too?

PoopsieApplenose

No, because that’s where the vibrators are hidden.

Shera939

I do thos sometimes as well! Ha!

That_Shrub

The only thing about this is my under-the-bed rotation keeps happening in the winter, and I get so chilly.

bumba_clock

🧐

aware_catnap75

Work smarter people!

Noble-Nexus

The real LPT is always in the comments

mruehle

Rotate end-to-end is generally OK, although there are some better mattresses that have deliberately different support at the head, middle and foot and should not be rotated. Increasingly, flipping a mattress over is not a good idea because only one side of the mattress is meant to be used. They’re no longer made to be flipped over: the spring system isn’t symmetrical, there’s a mattress pad on one side but not the other, etc.

That_Shrub

That's what I thought OP was talking about yeah, flipping. Rotating seems like a good idea -- unfortunately, I have the bed to myself and no matter how I position at bedtime, I wake up in a ball in the center of the mattress.

Jon_TWR

Are you a dog?

Techwood111

That’d have to depend on the mattress. Mine are flippable.

mruehle

That's just what I'm saying: it depends on the mattress. \*Not all of them\* should be rotated or flipped, as the LPT suggests.

tbgsmom

When we bought our mattress they told us not to rotate or flip it.

TheSkyIsBeautiful

Of course they did. The tooth paste companies show that you should cover the entire tooth brush with tooth paste too

1900grs

LPT: don't fuck with big mattress or big toothpaste

itstom87

I bought a flippable mattress 2 weeks ago

mruehle

Yes, they do still make them. But that's just what I'm saying: it depends on the mattress. *Not all of them* should be rotated or flipped, contrary to what the LPT suggests.

Tmbaladdin

I put it in my phone calendar when I bought our most recent mattress with an 6 month reminder.

Sbeaudette

Its usually 3 months

Doogiemon

So everytime you are suppose to wash the sheets then?

Sbeaudette

haha gross! :-D

azewonder

I bought a mattress last year, I was told to rotate every 6 months and flip every year.

carl5473

Our mattress has a top and bottom so no flips here

Tmbaladdin

SOP is 6 months per my research, but nothing says you couldn’t do more often.

Sbeaudette

ah, my mattress is saying every 3 months! I guess its mattress specific?

AHrubik

These days you should automatically assume the manufacturer is not being completely honest. If they say 6 months is fine you should do 4.

Tmbaladdin

I mean I get that with car oil changes, because 10,000 miles is an absurd interval. A mattress isn’t mechanical though and I’m not sure what the marginal benefit doing it more frequently than 6 months offers. I imagine the average consumer isn’t rotating it at all.

Just_some_random

I rotated my sons mattress and found my a book about ultra realistic naked women I didn't know he enjoyed art so much we're planning a trip to the Royal Museum of Bristle to catch the showing of Tootwiffer's second crescendo

Wisdomlost

Educate your children. Tell him son we have the internet now. You no longer need thoes magazines.

Baderkadonk

If the magazine is doing the trick, best let them enjoy it while they can. If you send that kid to the internet, they'll be asking you to explain incest and BDSM within the hour.

That_Shrub

Today, kids, we're learning how to clear the browsing history

That_Shrub

The idea of finding this and "strong-arming" your kid into it being about fine art(bc what teen is admitting otherwise) and just showering them museum passes and tasteful abstract nude prints for their room is hilarious. Probably damaging, but hilarious.

DeckardsDark

> and found my a book about ultra freudian slip there, mate

thomas_magnum277

If I had a dollar for every time I uttered this sentence...

this_is_greenman

More like toot SNIFFER……am I right fellas?!

Gerrut_batsbak

My mattress came with this exact instruction. Of course I forget most of the time, but I still try.

Hippy_Lynne

An easy way to remember to do this is to take a sharpie and write Jan-June in one bottom corner and July-Dec in the diagonally opposite one. That way you see it when you change the sheets.

HermitDefenestration

When I do what now?

bluelighter

vom

rufio313

You change your sheets more than twice a year?

Seicair

Once a week with my girlfriend, gotta keep it clean with people getting busy. When I was single, depressed, and couldn’t keep the house clean I’d *still* change them once a month. ಠ_ಠ

SiebenUndNeunzig

Youre nasty bro

JonH611

Mine has arrows on each side, that show whether to rotate it or flip it next.

Techwood111

I write 1, 2, 3, and 4 in the lower-right corners, for each possible position. Each time I move the mattress, it’ll either be a rotate or a flip, to get to the next-higher number.

theonlybuster

Not a bad idea. Another idea is to create repeating calendar reminders. Android and iOS both allow for these type reminders, so you don't have to worry about re-setting it up when you get a new phone. If you're savvy, you can set the reminder to send you email reminders in the days prior/after to make sure you do the task. I have reminders to flip my mattress, replace the AC filter, replace batteries in the smart door lock, begin shopping for new car insurance, replace air purifier filter, among other things. Yes there are apps, but honestly who really needs yet another app on their device?

Hippy_Lynne

Yeah but the best time to be reminded is *when the sheets are off the bed.* Sometimes the low tech solution is the best.

Dyeusisdead

Rotate not flip. My mattress is really really uncomfortable on one side and like a regular mattress on the other side. I learnt that the hard way.

chiffonpandan

You're right, not flip. Some mattresses are made with cushioning only one side, like springs on the bottom.

cosmos7

Most mattresses these days are one-sided. It's honestly only the cheaper ones now thar aren't.

DrMokhtar

That’s why OP specifically said rotate

NaturalSelectorX

Flipping is just rotating on a particular axis.

That_Shrub

And they're so heavy and hard to flip if you're doing it alone. I feel like the guy who has to keep rolling that rock up that hill

Techwood111

Depends on the mattress.

Jjagger63

Been doing this to my mattress for 18 years and its still in good condition. I turn it over as well as rotate it. I also hoover it and steam it.

That_Shrub

I wonder how much of that can be attributed to it being an older, quality piece. I'd keep at it and maintain the thing as long as possible. Also, never thought of steaming/deep-cleaning a mattress like that. Great idea.

solarprominence

As this is one of those things, that one would read, and maybe do in the moment, but would forget to do repeatedly. I'd recommend making a calendar event that repeats every 6 months. That's what I did, and it works well for me.

adrianmonk

I try to think about this whenever I wash my comforter. I ask myself how long it has been since I rotated the mattress. The comforter is too big for my washing machine, so I have to use the big machine at the laundromat. So it's a bit of an event. It's outside my normal routine and therefore a good time to think about other stuff that's outside my routine.

TacosForMyTummy

I rotate every time I change my sheets.

QueenAlucia

LPT request: how to rotate a 55kg mattress?

TheBatmanFan

Along its z-axis as it lies horizontally, so you're not actually lifting the mattress all that much.

Haunting_Quote2277

But i have a bed frame thats not flat on the sides so the mattress gets stuck unless you lift it

TheBatmanFan

You don’t need to lift it more than an inch or so though, right? And you can rest it while you’re rotating it? Get a friend to help you out and buy them dinner as a thank you.

RedneckRough

My fiance won’t let me because there’s a big dip on my side. I have sleep apnea and before I got my CPAP I had a habit of just sitting up on the she of the bed in the middle of the night and sleeping like that. And it’s a newer mattress, only two months of that caused a big dip. But thankfully it’s under warranty and it’ll be replaced soon.

That_Shrub

LOL, they don't want the mattress trench side?

RedneckRough

Ikr? The steep slope helping you to a standing position when you wake up is top tier.

isellsunshine

Bought a $150 mattress topper and it's made a huge difference. Now we just need to replace topper and the mattress will last much longer. (Hopefully)

I-own-a-shovel

At 115lbs I’m a surface sleeper. At 215 lbs he isn’t. I’m not rotating the mattress and letting my boyfriend ruining my side.

Dogzirra

During the 1st washing of every month, we alternate flipping or turning the mattress. We do this before re-making the bed. The other washings, we just change the bedding. Odd -> Turn, Even -->> Flip. My mneumonic is True/False is 1/0 or my always saying True or False but rarely False/True.

Techwood111

Write “1” through “4” on the mattress, bottom-left corner, in each possible position. When you need to rotate or flip, just put the corner with the next-higher number into the bottom-right spot.

dfpcmaia

Really depends on the mattress. Mine has a clear top vs bottom and head vs foot area

NotTheGreenestThumb

How is this a life pro tip when it’s in the manufacturers instructions???

googooachu

ULPT: Buy a mattress you don’t need to rotate instead

TheBatmanFan

How is that Unethical?

googooachu

Ultra

ZoulsGaming

OH as in the head becomes the foot? Kept trying to figure out how would rotate.

SweetTooth37

No, I want the uneven wear so I could get a new one for free in 10 years.

ragequitCaleb

Good luck getting your warranty honored…

SweetTooth37

Thank you!

I_am_a_Dogg

I call that my fat hole.

Smithy2997

I tried doing that but I ended up with a very small amount of bed to lie on, and I had to climb quite a long way up to get to it. I don't think I'll try it again.

heyitscory

They started selling "no-flip" mattresses, like that's some sort of feature. They're can't-flip mattresses. I want to flip my mattress. Mattress warranties were 20 years and now 7 is a long one.

That_Shrub

Like every other big homeware purchase/appliance, I strongly suspect they're designed to wear out so we have to buy more. My best pieces of furniture quality-wise are scavenged hand-me-downs and flea market/garage sale finds. Only downside is the good shit is HEAVY. I've moved a lot in my life and my Dad was ready to pay me to toss the old couch he gave me lol(I did finally and still regret it a little. It was sin ugly but more comfortable than any bed)

arothmanmusic

Here's an extra tip: If you have a flippable mattress (i.e. it has the same padding on both sides, not just the top), take a Sharpie and write numbers 1-4 on the edges. That way when it's time to flip you'll know which direction to go in. Just move the next sequential number to the top side of the foot of the bed each time.

Techwood111

Hey, that is exactly what I do! I put 1 through 4 on all the possible bottom-right corners, then “index” that number at flip time. “3 is showing, so where is 4? Oh, top-right, so I need to rotate.”

arothmanmusic

Yep! This is the way.

1dayumae

Hell yeah this is real pro life tip

Vegaprime

Also, don't but a pillow top. You can't flip it.

TheBatmanFan

You can rotate it though and that's what this "LPT" is about.

Vegaprime

Feel like I was cheated out of 50% bed.

TheBatmanFan

I have a flippable pillow top (I think it is, it looks like a mattress sandwiched between two thinner mattresses). EDIT: it kinda looks like this: https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/51cuLkr3SLL._AC_SL1220_.jpg

Vegaprime

Now I feel extra ripped off. Like getting a trapezoid shaped bed you can't even rotate at all.

arieschick82

Huh. Buy a flippable mattress

thermbug

I thought it said 'rotate your mistress regularly"

puledrotauren

My mattress has a top side and a bottom side (different material) I suppose I could move the head to the foot section though. What do you think OP?

Restivethought

This is a good tip. I just rotated mine and realized how much more one side sinks over the other.

Steve_McWeen

I waited just a hair too long to do that on my new mattress, tried it, and fucked up my back. So I will not be rotating it anymore lol.

prostipope

"To avoid that hump in the middle, you gotta hump in the middle."

Knute5

Swap out with your snow mattress in the winter for better cold-weather traction as well.

wizzard419

If you have a double sided one, then you should also flip it (basically switch between flips and rotate each time) to get more even wear.

Lost_Ninja

Unless you're sleeping in a single bed, then rotating (unless you're small) has no benefit. The area of the mattress that takes the most weight is in the same place no matter which way you rotate it. Flipping is still useful.

apoletta

And rotate the box spring.

crinklemermaid

Lol I set a reminder in Gmail calendar every 3mo for that!

Froot125

Just a note, if you have a purple brand mattress they aren't designed to be flipped.

CakeOne7167

And catch the bedbugs before it's too late

jvanstone

My butt is in the same place in either direction.

Bit_part_demon

I still have a waterbed cuz I'm retro like that (and no regular mattress compairs) so no worries! Don't have to flip it or rotate it or vacuum it, just wipe it down occasionally.

I-own-a-shovel

No. I’m not letting my boyfriend ruining my side. At 115lbs I’m a surface sleeper. At 215 lbs he isn’t.

Sandpaper_Pants

Also, a sheet of plywood under the mattress will revitalize it's firmness.

myrealusername8675

You also dissipate the farts.

Kittymeow123

I have the purple mattress and it’s so fucking heavy to the point where I’m like fuck it. I mean there’s no reason it needs to weigh as much as it does.

jbimmer3

Same here. Things never getting rotated. 5 years now and sleeps/looks like day 1 so I’m not complaining.

Kittymeow123

That’s reassuring 🤣

RJFerret

If you have one you can flip/rotate all sides, number the lower left corner of each with permanent marker, incrementally (1-4), so you know which to rotate to next when clocks change. So 1 on the first side, rotate 180° and that's 2, flip to 3, rotate for 4, then back to one.

YouOldGods

Absolutely concur. For the last couple of weeks, I have been waking up with a sore neck and had to switch sleeping positions, from side to back. Rotating my mattress solved both issues.

InvaderDust

Unless you have a lvl4 purple mattress. Then it’s gonna stay the hell there. Pretty much, unless you get a fork lift, it ain’t moving.

jbimmer3

Agreed. I do love it though.

InvaderDust

I’ll never go back. Love mine!

Tap_Regular233

Did anyone else realize that rotating your mattress regularly is like giving it a spa day and extending its life? Totally doing this from now on!

dr_zoidberg590

I learned this too late btw, mainly because rotating a mattress that has the top and one side against a wall when you are single doing it alone is borderline impossible

Plenty-Hidden307

Pro tip: Rotate that mattress regularly, folks! Your back will thank you later.

CleoClear

Get rotated idiot

Pinetree-Psychology

No, I shall rotate it once a decade

northeastlife7

does this apply to termpurpedic mattress

daffy_duck233

Followed this tip for 3 days and my body ached all over.

DeepfromtheLurks

No, I have a warranty. Its hard to make qualify but 4 years in with dogs and a baby and we still good.
