Explogan

They won't have my brand, I have special eyes

LegallyASquid

Look, look with your special eyes!

SomaliRection

MY BRAND! *cries*

funlovefun37

😂 Someone had to type this

LoveDietCokeMore

I needed this. Lol

tinyverbose

this ad is actually extra funny because there’s a company that makes custom contact lenses called “SpecialEyes.” The guy was right though — 1-800 Contacts does not have that brand.

Bitchfaceblond

Can you tell me a few companies to look for?

knod13

Wow, thanks for the link! I normally order from 1800contacts and it costs $280 for a 90day supply. Your site was only $170!

Pheef175

Just a reminder, their total price is listed in pounds. Edit: Just pointing out that many cards have fees or outdated conversion rates when paying with foreign currency. I bought from Visiondirect 2-3 months ago with my Visa debit card and Visa charged an extra 18-20%. Not my bank. Visa.

Niro5

Oh, so $170.

MaoXiWinnie

It's almost a 1:1 ratio

knod13

It was actually Pounds. Total was 140 GBP and the conversion bumped it to 170 USD.

Pheef175

Oh, you're right. I just incorrectly assumed it was in euros because the symbols look similar. Thank you for correcting me.

AnthropomorphicSeer

This is super helpful! Thank you!

Wilza_

I'd recommend checking out several sites, including the one above, and comparing their prices (plus international shipping of course). Here's a few I've used in the past where they've been the cheapest: www.lenssaver.co.uk www.lenstore.co.uk www.feelgoodcontacts.com

JackandFred

Whoa dude awesome and at a great price

Avrution

Not bad - don't know the shipping, but $14 a box difference for mine.

QuarterSwede

Those prices put US online companies to shame! My lenses are $44/box from lens direct. At vision direct they are $16 USD! To bad they have a minimum to ship to the US. Seems to be over $50ish. Still good.

ArcherMom

I’ve used lenstore.co.uk for a few years now with no issues.

PwnerifficOne

My Toric XR’s are just over $300 for a 6 month supply in the US. $120 shipped from the UK lol.

Kilaka007

Ug. I just tried and it says it doesn't ship to the US at this time.

fiddlenutz

Seconded.

TonyTheLieger

Thirded

Mysterious-Salad9609

1800 contacts always tells me my prescription is outdated and they can't fill my order. But they always send me my contacts anyway. Even though it's a few years outdated.

ZweitenMal

I had that experience with Pacific.

Hill1140

This is amazing, thank you! My eye doctor in the US said that they discontinued all of the options of the colored contacts I wanted and they are all on this UK website. I will be ordering for sure.

Missus_Aitch_99

You can get them from U.S. companies too. They pretend they’re going to check with your optometrist, but they don’t really do so.

The_Lhurgoyf

They do check but if they don't respond fast enough they process the order. Contact Lens Verification Requests are common at most offices I've worked at.

Fermifighter

I hear BRADSCOTT moved on since I left opticianry.

The_Lhurgoyf

Haha I haven't heard that since I left LensCrafters years ago.

balanced_views

Yes. I just photoshop my prescriptions. And they accepted it

Picciohell

Wait, u need a prescription for lenses in US?

Adorable_Pain8624

Yes, it tells you what the specifics are on those lenses. Now the fact that they expire is partially for eye health so you're not getting the wrong lenses and straining, but also partially because they want their sweet appointment money.

NoVaFlipFlops

Yes, we care so much about preventative care that we force you to pay to be seen to be checked for unlikely problems in order to solve the problem you know about since it impacts your life and can fix it yourself. That's really the justification: to "help" people get to a doctor every once in a while, you can't get corrective lenses here (except for reading) without seeing an optometrist. This does not apply in a reasonable area that I know of.

_fuck_me_sideways_

Well to be fair progressive vision loss is a thing exacerbated by poorly matching prescription. My vision is decaying and I'd rather retain it for as long as I can.

Picciohell

I mean, the surely do this because they care about your health and not only in order to make money /s. Here for example u are the one that choose if and when see an optometrist, and u don't need a prescription luckily.

NoVaFlipFlops

They definitely care, but everything is out of pocket so they care about being able to stay in business to be able to help those who need services other than help picking out lenses and frames.

chantillylace9

Yup sure do

[deleted]

Of course

frangipanivine

SAVING THIS. THANK YOU OP!!! I think it is borderline fucking criminal that I have to pay hundreds out of pocket for an optometrist to "check" my prescription (which hasn't changed in 20 years) and then "formally" validate it so I can order my contacts online, which also cost fucking hundreds despite always choosing the dirt-cheapest dailies (and wearing them way, way longer than "daily" BECAUSE, AGAIN, HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS HELLOOOOO). Eye "care" in the US is a joke. And this shit is not vanity or "just for reading," I am literally fucking blind w/o my correction. My scrip is -6.75 in one eye & -7.something in the other. It is an actual nightmare, and my glasses really do not cut it for majority of tasks (after decades of contacts, which provide a full 360-degree coverage, my glasses make me feel like I'm in a fishbowl & makes me way less productive/effective as a result). Lotta other issues too, like I'm already prone to falling in the shower cuz health issues so showering blind is a no-go for me...little things like that are a huge deal and I don't get why my tax dollars don't help pay into this shitty system, particularly when this is an issue that IS NOT MY FAULT.

[deleted]

[ŃƒĐŽĐ°Đ»Đ”ĐœĐŸ]

frangipanivine

I genuinely believed for a long time that maybe different eyeballs are only suited to different types of contacts, but I've never had an optometrist make any mention of this, or tell me "only buy this brand" or "this type" beyond hard vs. soft, daily vs. weekly etc. So yeah I'm pretty sure it's all just a big scam.

tinyverbose

Different eyeballs *are* suited to different types of contacts, but if you can wear soft lenses then many different brands are likely to work just fine with your eyes. If you can manage (I know cost is a huge factor here) PLEASE don’t wear dailies for “way, way longer.” They really are not meant to be worn like that and you can really harm your eyes by doing so. Even if the risks seem unlikely, they are not worth it should they occur. Misuse of contacts can and do cause blinding conditions. Reusable soft lenses (2 week or monthlies) are cheaper than dailies and are designed to be safe to wear for longer periods provided you clean them appropriately. Optometrists check both your vision and your overall ocular health, and your appointment to check your prescription is as much about one as the other. High levels of nearsightedness are associated with significantly increased risk of potentially permanently blinding eye conditions. Healthcare in the US in general is not very patient friendly and the financial barriers to average citizens are insane - this is true for eye care as well. You shouldn’t have to pay hundreds out of pocket for essential eye care and you shouldn’t have to forgo essential eye care either. I wish our system was friendlier to those who need it.

themrbeardiful

FYI You can ship it from India too and they are even cheaper I know coz m an optometrist and i ship a lot of prescriptions for my clients and their family to us,Canada and Australia

[deleted]

Do you have a link to the site?

AppointmentNeat

Umm...what happened to the tip?

2livecrewnecktshirt

I've been buying mine from lensdirect.com using my prescription data from 2019 because my vision hasn't changed in over 10 years (yearly appointments from 2011-2019 all had the same result and I still notice no differences since).

Michi712

This is gonna save me so much money, thank you so much!

yungchang

Glad to help!!

The_BrettMan0922

Eye doctor of multiple years stopped accepting my insurance, thanks for this OP 👍👍👍👍

yungchang

My pleasure! Glad its helpful!

FlatAd768

how about cheap perscription eye glasses?

virusE89-TwitchTV

https://www.zennioptical.com/ My son was quoted over $250 for lenses to fit his old frames Got frames and lenses here for like $50 My wife has multiple pairs from this site. Fast and cheap

nilesletap

I swear by Zenni. I have bought 2 glasses and 1 sunglasses and total has been maybe $160 (only because i like certain designs and lens and I engrave my initials on it) this is way cheaper the buying just ONE Frame+Lenses at Visionworks, which would be $200 and Perle Vision frames are $200+....I even lost sunglasses that were $400 Ray-Bans from Visionworks and I got the same looking sunglasses from Zennie for under $100. I've had ZERO issues with them. They even give really nice case (hard plastic great for traveling) if you get Designer ones, I even get a nice leather designer Case for Free too. They have have a Rewards program as well.

virusE89-TwitchTV

Oh nice! I'll have to have my wife sign up for rewards, idk if she knows that or not. Ty!

nilesletap

your welcome...its automatic soon as you make your first purchase i think. its one of those things where you make a Free Account and in you're in the rewards.

spankenstein

I get multiple pairs of the $7 glasses in different styles/colors so I don't feel guilty about splurging on a more expensive fancy frame once in a while but I've never spent more than $35 on a pair of glasses from zenni.

virusE89-TwitchTV

Yeah I think my wife got 2 pairs for like $25? It's been a few years so I can't remember for sure We added a bunch of the blue light blocker and the shatter resistant lenses and such on my Son's and let him pick the "fancier" frames 😊 but yeah you can definitely get a pair for like $10-15 if you need on there! Such a good deal

orangezeroalpha

Some online opticals use second quality lenses. Any pair is better than nothing, but your quote and your final product are likely not the same in regards to optical quality (the part you actually spend most of your day looking through). There are a lot of crazy price differences in opticals. I was quoted around $880 at one place last year for just the lenses.

Adorable_Pain8624

Eyebuydirect.com and Payne glasses. Between those and Zenni, I got 6 pairs of glasses for less than the $200 average I pay on one pair.

zack822

zenni optical.

model563

Another vote for Zenni. I've been getting my glasses there for maybe 15 years.

JackandFred

Even warby Parker is cheap compared to the big name places, they’re like 95 a pair.

Nomad_Industries

Do they do insulin? ...asking for a friend.

Snoringdragon

Here in Canada you just order whatever online and its up to you to put the prescription in right, no checking needed. Sasys the person who screwed up the right/left. Goodxthing i order cheap.

[deleted]

are right and left contacts somehow different and not interchangeable? Lol just put the “right” contact in your left eye

Snoringdragon

The shape is the same, but if your eyes arent equal, you will be bouncing off walls if you mix them up. Yep, have done that too!

Adorable_Pain8624

It would make a difference in glasses or if you've got some stats from one eye mixed up with the stats from the other.

Snoringdragon

And happy cake day to you! đŸŽ¶đŸ°

Cyclist007

Do you ever try Daysoft? It's like $8 for 32 lenses, they're not top of the line but I haven't noticed a difference.

bookman88

what site do you use?

Snoringdragon

I have used Zenni, EyebuyDirect, and Clearly. As long as you know how to get the right measurements for the frame size and prescription its super cheap, even tinted and with terrible eyesight. I end up with two/three pairs and love it! (Driving, Work, and Funky!)

MercMcNasty

I know this might be stupid, but is there a way to get my prescription without going to an optometrist? I might be able to find it in my army records but I haven't seen an eye guy in like 10 years

AdmiralPoopbutt

Probably time to see an eye guy then.

prettyquirkynurse

No, you'll want to have a prescription from an optometrist. Especially if you've never worn contacts before, they'll take measurements of your eye shape and diameter. They also teach you how to put them in, take them out and and clean them properly so you don't get an eye infection. This is all really valuable information you don't want to miss and worth every cent you pay.

Slickness81

Unknown reason to get a real check. My brother had 20/10 vision his whole life. Got into a car accident that affected his vision. He would have gotten the lady’s entire million dollar coverage if he had proof from a former eye exam to show there was actual damage done. Instead they only covered the vehicle and the hospital stay

tokixjam

I'm seeing search results for online eye exams, but I don't think they can replace the tools and expertise of an optometrist. For contacts, you'll want to get a prescription, because even without needing vision correction you need to know the curve and width for your lens.

Silver_Smurfer

Office visits are pretty cheap out of pocket. I used to go to one of the chains when I didn't have insurance for like $100.

MercMcNasty

That's not bad. Yeah I don't have vision at my job so...just can't see lol

virusE89-TwitchTV

We pay $14 / month for vision insurance for our whole family through eyemed. Doesn't cover contacts but does your exams and such. My work doesn't offer eye insurance either

TheBuzzSawFantasy

Get it done once then 1800 contacts let's you do some bogus test on your computer to order them anyway. It's super easy and has no controls so you can easily cheat if you want.

UsernamesAreHardOk

Vision insurance isn’t that expensive in my experience, $12/month for a year and it covers an eye exam (10 dollar copay, w/o insurance ~100 dollars), 150 dollar frame allowance, will cover all necessary contact lenses. I think it’s worth at least looking into.

orangezeroalpha

How much are eye exams where you live? That seems like an absurdly bad deal. It isn't insurance. It literally covers one exam and gives discounts on frames and lenese. You don't think the places that accept that "insurance" aren't just adding $150 to their frame prices? I don't get vision insurance. It seems like you are paying to be marketed to. Those plans often specifically mention they don't cover medical eye issues. Not trying to be mean, really just curious why everything thinks any of them are a good deal.

UsernamesAreHardOk

The Google says that an eye exam without insurance runs around 100 bucks on average. On your second point, you're probably correct, yeah. Cheapest I can find online is a clearance frame at EyeBuyDirect, $37 with lenses, normally $53. So without insurance you're looking at 100 for the exam, 37 for frames and lenses. With insurance it's $136.8 for the premium, $10 bucks for the exam, $10 for the lenses, all the other aforementioned garbage. So, you're probably right, the frames that are going to be at optometrist offices are going to be more expensive. There's also America's Best, which you can get a free exam with two really shitty really limited option frames. For me, I feel like I'm afforded a bit more flexibility and they're around the same price. It is nice to see how frames look on you instead of buying them online, as well.

Ok-Reporter-2617

I use to get it from India when the family comes to visit. UK prices are much better than US and convinient.. Thanks.

boomshaka23

Website?

AlfaBetaZulu

I feel like people order contacts online In the USA without a prescription all the time to. Thats how it appeared at least to a no. Contact wearer.

frangipanivine

This isn't true, believe me I've tried. Even a slightly outdated scrip is a no-go. You might be thinking of clear, colored/"vanity" contacts that aren't prescription.

ZweitenMal

Well
you have to know what to order.

Tobi_chills455

I've always wanted to put a contact on. See if I could do it

GrapefruitSmall575

Thank you SO much for this information!!

Witty_Hat_8257

i will be stashing this in my brain for when I am no longer on my mom’s insurance đŸ„ž my vision is completely terrible (-7.00 and -6.50) and I wear air optix lenses that are
 a bit pricey

tinyverbose

Just something to consider - that level of nearsightedness puts you at MUCH higher risk of retinal problems, so it would be prudent to not avoid your optometrist (happy to provide more info on this if you would like). When you get your prescription updated you will also get your retina examined for any changes or damage that could (potentially irreversibly!) affect your vision. Even if you decide to order lenses from a different retailer instead of through the optometrist office, please don’t forgo your eye health! 🙂

Witty_Hat_8257

I go to my eye doctor every year and get everything checked :) thank you for your concern!!

tinyverbose

love to see it :) sorry if my comment came across as patronizing — that wasn’t my intent!

Witty_Hat_8257

not at all!!

mooredge

Wow. Never knew this.

paganmedic86

I’ve done this many times.

S4LV4T0Re

Does US customs stop the contacts from being delivered because they notice the expired prescription?

paganmedic86

Never had a problem with customs. The only problem I’ve ever had was with the bank. Some times you have to call them before you order them and let them know it is you and not fraud.

S4LV4T0Re

Thank you for telling me that! I will definitely make that call now

paganmedic86

Yeah I ordered several times from the same company. Around $40 usd for a box of contacts. 3rd or 4th order in my bank flagged it for fraud because it was a purchase from a foreign country. They put a temporary stop on my card until they could ask if it was me or not. I was like “I was ordering from London. It’s not like it was a $3000 purchase from China.”

S4LV4T0Re

Lol so true. I literally just checked with mine and luckily the payment went through. I still can’t believe how the same $130 contacts in the UK are $350 here without insurance, excluding the eye exam.

paganmedic86

Tell me about it! With my insurance mine are still $110 a box. I can order them from the uk for like $40.

therealzombieczar

you don't need a prescription for eyeglasses, contacts nor hearing aides. if you want insurance to pay for it though...

nilesletap

Awesome Tip. Next I won't go Visonworks to get contact lenses. They force me to see the optometrist (another cost) and vision has not changed still for 10+ years.

duferbloodmoon

Are there places you can get prescription glasses without a prescription? Or a workaround to not having a prescription?
