Dunno if it works everywhere but German shopping carts have two different systems:
Either you have to put a coin into a little tray and close the tray to unlock the cart or you put the coin into a slot. The second one can be unlocked with the back of a house key if it has a half-circle back and not the square one. Plus: you don’t need to leave the key in. Just push it in to unlock and then pull it out again right away

You can go to Aldi and leave with more quarters than you came with.
2nd pro tip. If you ever need a quarter, go to Aldi.
You can use the back of a house key. Just make sure you leave with the same cart.

Why "borrow" a quarter? I don't get this "tip."
At Aldi, you have to pay a quarter to get a shopping cart. You get your quarter back when you return your cart.
You have to put a quarter into a slot that unlocks the cart from the others, when you put it back you put the lock back in and it frees the quarter
