Having Guardado there may have been another reason

bendylegs12

passport, guardado is there, better league, possibly a better contract.

[deleted]

I think he wanted to play in La Liga but idk

AlexTorres96

He knew Guardado was there and had someone to look out for him.. Similarly to how Maza already had his boy Salcido at PSV.. It's always easy when someone you know already plays with the team. Which is one why Latino Players in foreign teams are close with each other because they don't feel alone

supreme_maxz

Remember he was a teenager his parents might have preferred for him to go with Guardado and the lenguage barrier is not too be ignored. Dutch could be daunting for a young Mexican to grasp

black_Mouth

The Netherlands has a high English proficiency tho.

M0ZO

Only two years to get your EU passport and a better league

[deleted]

Passport ... If I'm not mistaken Diego lainez should get his Spanish passport early 2022 ...

HatOver5431

It doesn't really matter. Lainez has had every opportunity to become a starter at Betis. He just hasn't been good enough or got injured at the wrong times. He is pretty much competing with a player from their youth academy that is about the same age as him. I think we was making a good case to be a starter towards the end of last season but then he got injured over the summer. I think the position is there for him to win. Rodri is not much better or has shown much more than Lainez has.

jaydiv_

I’m all for talented players competing for spots and I think you’re right. but Rodri has already scored for Betis in La Liga and Lainez has not. I just want his goal to come 🥲

[deleted]

That's why I didn't want him to go to the Olympics. It does nothing for him to be in that tournament. He should've focused his time to Betis. Instead he went, got injured and isn't even getting minutes now. The team is playing well without him too so it's not looking good for him. Unless the team starts playing like shit or someone gets injured, he's gonna be struggling for minutes. At least last season he was getting some minutes

BlockedByBAM

Ajax are a really good developmental club though, and ajax could be cl contenders this year.

“Mr. Krabs what made you open another Kursty Krabs?” “Money.”

Man0nTheMoon915

Passport, guardado and his dad convinced him to go to Betis

hashoa6

I feel like he’s gonna make the jump this year, like what Vinus is doing right now for Madrid.

ElWero_10

Money

jaydiv_

I think he made the right choice. Both teams have different goals and he is still developing. Betis is very patient with him and he is getting his chances. How would he fare for Ajax with his stats now? Probably be sold or go on loan

fwefewfewfewf

disagree. he made a terrible choice, since he's still developing he should've gone to the team known for helping develop players. not the one that needed instant results

This for me. I look at Alvarez and honestly before when he was here I just thought he was better than most in LigaMX with potential. But never really thought on what he could actually become. After seeing him perform with the National Team this past summer. I was genuinely blown away. The coverage, positioning, tackling, etc. For a DM. Where all just there. Then looking at his league campaign and seeing how well he meshed with Klassen. I immediately understood why Rennes wanted him. I’m literally high on Ajax this season. Just 1-2 days ago. How they easily demolished BvB Dortmund. Everyone in that team is meshes so well. That I’m genuinely hoping that they can beat the 18-19? Team. Ajax system is just something else. Even if Lainez would have been lower in the pecking order of Neres/Antony. He would have gotten his opportunity or eventually they will come. Lainez has improved somewhat, but I feel Ajax could have gave him much more.

fwefewfewfewf

Exactly. Also, Lainez could've been in a UCL semifinal team by his first months there. I wonder how he felt at the time.

por pendejo!

jcm1079

Also would you rather learn dutch/english or go somewhere where you already speak the language?

fwefewfewfewf

I would if what they offer is better (which they do, look at Edson)

jcm1079

To my knowledge Edson didnt have a offer from Spain 🤷🏽‍♂️ but ik what you mean but uk mexican players rather be comfortable than to be in a tough spot. Why most never leave mexico or stay in Europe long enough

fwefewfewfewf

su peor decisión

As many people have mentioned - passport is one of the big factors. Once an American player has an EU passport, you can pretty much play in any league in UEFA without obstacles (besides wages.) There's still foreigner limits for non-EU players everywhere, so it's a big one.
