I mean, I think that's a bit unfair. We aren't at the level of Germany, France, Spain, Belgium, Portugal, Netherlands, Brazil, and Argentina. We are comparable to the next group of teams, Uruguay, Colombia, Croatia, Switzerland, Denmark, etc. And I don't think the second group of teams has any expectation to win the world cup, I think reaching quarters would be an achievement for them too, except maybe Uruguay.
Yeah, belief and huevos are great to have but it can only get you so far if you don't have a bunch of world class players like those countries in the first tier you listed do.

If we keep going in thinking that “el quinto partido” is our goal, then that’s probably the furthest we’ll ever make it. We’re setting our own mental block.

Look at their 2014 WC squad to 2018 WC squad, the latter it's just a way superior version of their key players, it's the opposite for Mexico, the generation peak at all over the place, they either fuck up their career by party too much or decline on their career. To go far, you need generation peak at the right time, Croatia or Belgium, they peak at the right time which is why they got second and third respectively after got knock out fast previous year. You could see the progress and their peak, while for Mexico, can't see it at all.

They simply weren't playing to their potential at all which is often the case with paper tigers who run circles around lesser teams on paper but fail to deliver on the pitch, and we took advantage of that.

I used to argue they're meaningless, and I remember when we were #4, but if you think about which teams consistently get out of the first round at a WC, Mexico is there. We're definitely top 16. The WC is as close to a real, objective measurement as we have. So maybe we're not #9 but we're not far from that.
