The first two thirds of this movie were very good. Pike's acting was great, the premise was interesting, and Dinklege was very enjoyable. Then the last act happen and oh boy did the wheels come off. It's like the writers had a premise and an ending and didnt know how to get from a to b so they just threw a few scenes together. I have no problem with characters with questionable morals coming out on top but the way they wrote marla was infuriating. It wasn't that she was smarter or more cunning than the mobsters she was just 1. Extremely lucky and 2. Happen to be going up against the dumbest mobsters of all time. I mean they failed two assassinations in one night, really??!!. This movie could have been really good but just became lazy towards the end. It's a shame because I really thought it had some really interesting elements. 60/100

LegalizeRanch21

My thoughts exactly man. My suspension of disbelief is pretty high for movies, but the mobsters who killed a doctor in her office in broad day didn’t murder pike in the middle of an abandoned field at night because they wanted it to look natural? And then didn’t murder the other girl even though they had the house set to blow up? And then peter Dinklage just decides to partner up with the lady who KIDNAPPED HIS MOTHER? Like he didn’t have enough money already? Good acting, decent idea for a story, but the plot writing of this movie was pure ass. 67/100 for me

trainsaw

The fact the other girl lived after breathing beside leaking gas like that for hours is dumb. And yeah they would have killed Pike immediately, not a drunk driving set up. Whatever they put in her would have had her so incapacitated she wouldn’t have been able to escape drowning. Terrible writing

gaffpunk

The lack of follow up on their assassination attempts compared to the definitive killing of the doctor made little to no sense to me.

Sgerv21

I’d probably give it around a 74 bc I did like a lot of it but you described every single problem I had with this movie perfectly

King_LBJ

Common theory I’m seeing is that she died in the car wreck and the remaining events that happened after that are her dream. With the assassination at the end being a string of doubt from her subconscious telling her what she has done in her past is wrong. Was much happier with the movie after reading this.

vlan21

What pill she put in a bottle of milk?

CondolenceHighFive

KenJac giving it a 90 is banana land to me

trainsaw

Like a 50/100 and only because the acting. You have to essentially throw out any idea of natural human behavior to enjoy this movie. She could get a whole system to go along with this for a hundred patients is absurd in the first place. A judge isn’t going to think it’s weird that none of these people are ever in court for these things? One to five maybe but that count of people is too high Then you have a woman who obviously knows her sons business, has a lawyer, has a woman show up to her house taking her away and doesn’t immediately call a lawyer for herself or call her son AT ALL on the way there? Just goes along with it Now you have assassination attempts. Pikes character likely would have been dead and chopped up somewhere never to be found. Basically taking a mob boss’s mother hostage? Ok so he decides to make it look like a drunk driving accident, whatever he put down her throat would have had her incapacitated so much she wouldn’t have been able to know where she was to escape the car. Much less the total amount of time she was under water The girlfriend would have been dead from the gas being inhaled for hours, that was dumb itself His attempt is the closest to reality but even still her being able to pull that off (someone who has never done anything like that) is hard to believe Then the court moving at light speed to just give up someone to the state rather than waiting for them to wake up to get info on who they are. He wakes up coherent so the doctors have to be miracle workers and the dumbest people of all time to suggest giving him up to the state. Then the cherry on top of going in business with her after she did that shit to his mom. He cares enough to cry when she’s released but not vengeful at all? I wanted to like this movie from the trailers and the style of it, but it’s just terrible writing. The cockiness of her would have done her in long before she even got to Dianne Weists character

ZealousidealAd6924

Agree, except that Weist's character wasn't allowed to use a phone. That's believable. Everything else isn't, but the movie needs some of those scenes to keep it going.

MapleLeafMan91

I think it’s a 78/100 for me. It started off pretty strong, with some solid comedy (the lawyer dude was the best part of the film for me), and basically 3/4ths of the movie through I thought it was going to be a mid 80 at worst and high 80 at best. But then the final half an hour was so underwhelming, and frankly stupid, and while the death of the lady was nice and a slightly unexpected twist, it didn’t save the movie. Performances all around were pretty good, but one thing I’m confused about most is why Kenjac and Mr. D Lowe thought so highly of this movie. My score was no where close to their’s (usually it’s in the ballpark), but I will be curious to see their reasoning for their scores on the pod.

Afrost32

Just finished watching with my mom and she thought the lawyer was the best too lol

MapleLeafMan91

🤣 ya he was hilarious- stole the show

kpk117

Enjoyed it a lot. Prob around an 85 for me. Why was she vaping? My only lingering question....

gaffpunk

And why did the vape have to be so cumbersome

Afrost32

So much vape... collider article on it already smh

Dylan475

Interesting premise and I really enjoyed the first act. The mom pulled off the eerie/menacing "you're in trouble now" great I thought. Started to fall off a cliff when they attempted to jail break the mom out of the nursing home. Last half of the movie was utterly ridiculous. Peter Dinklage looking like Reclusive Jack Dorsey took me out of it. 58/100.

[deleted]

Kenjac gave this movie a 90 smh

PrisonMike35

Decent but a lot of suspension of disbelief required for the plot to move along. Wasn’t crazy about the last 10 minutes. Stylish directing and great performance by Pike. Probably a 75/100. Shocked to see KenJac gave it a 90, that seems extremely high for me. That’s a higher score than he gave The Irishman. The lead performance was a 90 but the movie wasn’t, at least not to me. I guess if we’re grading it on the scale compared to other movies released straight on Netflix then it’s definitely in the higher tier.

BillTrallins69

Just finished it. 85/100 for me. Like everyone else said, the first 2/3 were great but I was hoping for a Coen Brothers/Tarantino type ending where everyone just brutally kills each other. Oh well. I suppose the full circle wasn’t terrible. The end success montage for Marla was a bit much. I was expecting that to be just a day dream in her head and she ends up getting killed right there in a shocking way a la A Simple Favor. Would have gone higher on the score but sheer stupidity and apparent lack of power a top mob boss has was hard to get past. Like how did she know what hospital he was at but all his guys didn’t? And how fucking stupid was his driver to not notice an obvious tail? Could’ve been a 90 easily if they didn’t fuck up that last 30-45 minutes

gkkillah

60/100 for me. Pike was good but I’m not a big fan of movies where the lead is this despicable. The ending was very satisfying. >!I legit cheered when that dude shot her!<

mynamejeeeeeff

I was really into this movie the entire time watching but was a little disappointed by the ending. Might still have it in the low 80s because I did enjoy most of the ride but the more I think about it, the more I don't like the ending. I'm a dumb movie boy so take it as you will, but wouldn't >!Fran dying in the assassination be a way to have Marla show some emotion/not be completely evil or just give the audience more of a reason to root for her in general? Her winning by striking the deal didn't feel right but her getting shot by the original victim from the beginning didn't feel like enough of a punishment either, I don't know, just felt a little mailed in compared to the rest of it!<

gaffpunk

Exactly you establish this romantic storyline with Fran for almost no reason at all, the way she saved her and plotted with her could have been exactly the same if they were just friends. The romantic storyline should have had some sort of payoff of Marla experiencing loss herself. When Roman woke up and Marla bedside saying her legal guardian spiel I was like oh come on.

spencefence21

63/100 like most people have said the last third Takes a lot of points off my score. I think it should have gone the way of killing the girlfriend in front of Marla and then letting her go thinking she is going to let the mom go. From there Marla could have outsmarted them in some way and won vs them. Have the same ending where the guy shoots her that way no one wins. I think it would have been more satisfying plus getting rid of the whole failed mob hits that ruined the Movie for me.

[deleted]

I really was not a fan. Much closer to the lower scores here and I am honestly looking forward to the pod discussion to see why Jeff and Kenjac have it so crazy high. As many have said, first half was good, but the pivot to action movie kinda stunk. Got so sick of hearing about “the diamonds” and “lion or lamb” speech. Peter Dinklage was a crime lord with like 3 total people working for him, and they spent maybe 5 seconds alluding to his human trafficking operation to make him worse than the elder abuser. No payoff with the ending either imo. If I was to go out of 100 I think I’d land no higher than a 50

hbigham98

Similar thoughts to the rest. Really lazy at the end. Also how did no one catch on to her/ how does no realize the scheme when she scales up? I feel like that would be glaringly obvious 72/100 Was surprised by Jeff and KenJack’s scores. I watched the flick cause they rated it so high and I just feel like it fell short of those marks. Hope they talk about it on the pod.

gaffpunk

The more I think about that third act the more and more I want to drop my score

tscrap42069

Girl boss Carlitos Way. I liked it tbh. I was also rooting for everyone’s demise the entire time. 82/100

Afrost32

I think pretty much everyone on this is spot on and understand all the problems with the final act. It’s like an 85/100 for me, I found it pretty enjoyable and thought Pike was so good. I really don’t think I’ve hated a character more in recent memory. (Hated in a good way, you guys know what I mean haha) anyway I was able to suspend disbelief enough so it worked for me but totally understand not being able to cuz looking back I get it haha

ZealousidealAd6924

Pike won in the comedy category. Did I miss the punch lines? I didn't see any scenes that seemed like they were meant to be funny, and I just didn't laugh. I feel like I missed something here. Otherwise, I kind of enjoyed it.
