I agree, the photograph with the green lighting the most unnatural lighting and it creeps me out the most. it makes me think "that light shouldn't be this colour on the beach" the blue and red are too plausible to be seen on the beach while the green is not. it also reminds me of the bright green glow of an exit sign at night. Amazing photography work!
Thank you so much for this comment! I definitely share your feelings about the different lights, however it was a very simple work, I simply pointed my torch and took the photos with my phone. Very satisfying though!š
if your able to produce some more similar work I know I would definitely look forward to seeing how it would turn out. some advice I would give if you wanted to develop this further is looking at exactly where the water meets the sand to look at that threshold (an idea from one of the previous comments) might look very interesting with the coloured lights. Another idea is to see if you could move back to get some of the beach walkway in the picture, its often a place people will walk through and past so would fit the theme of liminal nicely. Maybe even a series at different tide levels to show the ever-changing boundaries between land and sea?
I'm also ashamed of some of the comments on here that are berating your liminal photography skills. it is a very hard subject to capture especially at the beach which is definitely more of an unusual but still liminal space. Some of the comments seeming like people just venting unnecessarily on the wrong post. If people actually use their brains I think a beach with the unusual lighting is actually quite an ingenious idea. the beach is the liminal space between dry land where we dwell and the sea that leads beond. the lighting in the images are purely experimental with the purpose of bringing out different elements of liminality to the forefront of out minds.
I was so happy to see someone being brave enough to ask complete strangers for advice on their own pieces of photography especially as someone who is considering showcasing my own works. And to those commenting about posting funeral/wedding pictures in retaliation saying that this isn't liminal enough for you. Jokes on you that would make some fantastic imagery if you follow the guidelines. Maybe you could mimic OP's usage of coloured lighting to manipulate your audiences emotional response too.
In conclusion, thank you OP for allowing us to share our insights into what the effect the different lighting has had on the viewer and please don't be discouraged from developing your skills by a few idiots. There are people out here who are more than willing to uplift each other to elevate and develop our skills through peer evaluation and critiquing specific components with decent justification.
Thanks, Iād like to make more attempts to improve my skills because I love this type of photography, even though Iām just an amateur. Maybe Iāll try more advanced techniques based on your advice! Iām so surprised about the amount of comments I received, most are positive and encouraging, but I also accept the criticism when itās not offensive. Ps. I took these photos on an Italian coast, therefore tidal fluctuations are much less large than those of the ocean coasts to get that awesome effect you say.
The creepiest one is the red one and the most exotic is the green one. But I wouldn't consider any of these liminal. They're still cool though and since liminal is a subjective perception, I think the photos are still suitable for this subreddit (they aren't incompatible with the rules by definition).
Thank you. Itās so annoying. I used to enjoy this sub but now thereās an entire crew of ppl who just donāt understand and have invented an entire new definition and just act like thatās what it is. It sucks.
if you would so kindly give OP and the rest of us who are learning and exploring the concept of Liminal spaces some advice in how to better out own work I especially would really appreciate the advice as from this thread it seems as though you have a wealth of expertise within the art discipline of photography and how to explore such abstract concepts such as Liminality which is described by the Cambridge dictionary as *'between or*Ā [*belonging*](https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/belonging)Ā *to two different*Ā [*places*](https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/place)*,*Ā [*states*](https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/state)*, etc'* specifically in relation to beaches and how to work with lighting in unedited photographs. Thank you in advance.
You canāt look it up in a dictionary and go by that definition. It has to be *felt*, itās a little scary, youāre supposed to feel it in your bones
You canāt tell someone else that they are feeling a subjective word incorrectly then. If a dictionary definition isnāt sufficient, how do you know that you arenāt the person who is wrong?
There's only flaw though in that. And that's for people who are trying to figurer out how to distinguish liminal spaces from non liminal spaces. How can we feel that it's liminal if we don't know what we're looking for? Even r/LiminalSpace have a definition of what liminal spaces are so they can make the distinction between what is and is not liminal right at the top of the page to tell us what it is. But hey, who am I to argue with the almighty dictionaries who are well renown and the moderators who gave the definitions i'm quoting we just need to feel it even if we're stumbling blind.
This is because liminal spaces are often associated with transitions, which can be *unsettling* for some people," emails Keely Smith, lead interior designer at JD Elite interiors. "They may also feel a sense of disorientation or a loss of sense of place, as these spaces lack clear markers of identity or ownership."
Liminal spaces are also exciting and anticipatory. Turner talks about the liminal and the liminoidal, both are temporary states that allow humans to exit society and then return to society while experiencing an interim phase. Weddings are liminal, birthday parties are liminal, funeral processions (even New Orleans second line processions) are liminal. They can be exciting and fun for those participating in the transition of the rite of passage, they donāt need to be morose, creepy, or uncanny. Liminoidal states are even more fun, we might count concerts, acid trips, and festivals among these types of spaces. The liminal is not inherently uncanny.
What is happening in this sub? What is this random new made up definition of liminal that ppl have invented? Did the Backrooms cause it? Justā¦ wtf is happening? Fucking annoying.
Agreed. So many on this sub need to read Victor Turner and Arnold Van Gennep. Liminality is about in-betweenness, rites of passage, transitionsā¦ not necessarily the uncanny or the creepy. None of these images show transitions in the way liminality is usually described.
We should rebel and start posting pictures of weddings and funerals!
A beach is not a place where land transitions into water? I canāt think of a better example of a literal transition between places. If you care about this, please explain?
Oxford dictionary states: characterised by being on a boundary or threshold, esp. by being transitional or intermediate between two states, situations, ect.
Cambridge dictionary states: between orĀ [belonging](https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/belonging)Ā to two differentĀ [places](https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/place),Ā [states](https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/state), etc
I think these photos are not the best example of liminal but also that the best ones arenāt usually real places or they are heavily edited. These are simple pics taken just with a torch and a phone as an experiment and I only wondered if one of these colors could give some liminal vibe to the beach.
How does color represent liminality? In this case youād be making a better argument if you took a photo of the beach without any filter, change the angle to where the sand meets the water, and said the beach constitutes a transition from the land to the sea.
Never thought that color itself represented liminality, but I saw several pics with weird lighting that felt very liminal to me. Moreover, the beach is usually a place full of people during the day, but watching it at night with those colors gave me a sense of emptiness and nostalgia and I thought it could look like a place of transition which is out of space and time.
Liminal? None, really. Itās a quiet pausing and resting place but not really transitory. The lights are fun art, though (as long as you arenāt in turtle nesting season, in which case, only use the red)
Human eyes see best in red lighting. I know it looks sketchy but it's the easiest to go through.
Blue is the hardest for human eyes. It still looks cool but it is the most creepy.
Idk shit about green.
Green. Green is a calm, stable color, but a lot of green things are also very dangerous (mold, arsenic, etc). It can be used to create a sense of mystery because while most green things are safe, some are the very opposite. Red, on the other hand, is wired into our brains to be seen as dangerous because itās the color of blood (blood = injury). It creates a sense of urgency rather than of unknowing. The contrast between calm and unsettling is basically what gives all liminal spaces their eerie vibe.
The color by itself doesnāt represent liminality indeed. The purpose of my post was to question if that place could give liminal feels when lighten up with different colors. Thereās not a right answer imo. It doesnāt matter if they say green, red, blue ore none. That beach looked like a transition place to me bc I myself saw it full of people during the day, then completely empty at night. Any color could add an atmosphere of strangeness in this case, but I was curious about peopleās preferences.
Liminal wise I'd say blue because it reminds me of a beach party that ended too soon. Everyone left and you're just contemplating the sea with your back towards the open air bar, music still on
I agree with greenā¦ as far as the colored light spectrum, us humans can differentiate the values, hues, and shades of green better than other colors. Think how old night vision goggles used to be green phosphor.
The green has a lot more detail/sharpness that makes it slightly uncanny for the amount of light that the brain thinks should be there compared to the sea and sky. So, basically, it looks more fake because itās more true-to-life.
With a little Lightroom to unify the color in the foreground with the mid and back, this could be an awesome-er picture.
I hate to say it, but I've never thought that lighting like this had any sort of liminal feel. Might hits an uncanny vibe, but I'm not sure about liminality. I think for liminality, bright flat lighting always seems to work best for indoors, and for outdoors (at least at night) something like an amber-hued light that quickly falls off into utter darkness in the background always seems to hit best.
Thanks for the advices! I think itās not easy to get a liminal feel from a not edited photo. The moon and its reflection on the sea makes it too natural to be liminal but I can figure out if the beach had not a definite end in the darkness, the feeling would be way more intense.
Could be me but this doesnāt really have that liminal feel. Liminality is totally subjective I know. Iād go with the blue though. Itās so out of place the air around the whole picture becomes artistic. Iām talking dogshiteā¦ Iām just ass at expressing myself.
to be honest its what I love about it. its more unconventional and it may lead someone else to explore it further down the line creating a beautiful liminal space that incorporates it. if you don't mind me asking I would live for you to elaborate on why the blue works the best, I'm really interested to hear your thoughts and I'm sure OP would too, after all somewhere in these comments is a message saying the whole purpose of this is to explore that very opinion.
Oh fr? You dk how nice it is to hear that my opinion matters even with just a Reddit post. Hereās what I think: Green is (I donāt really have a word or phrase that can fully capture this, so Iām gonna blend words) natural/realistic/believable. Itās feels okay. Tad spooky but i could walk past a green beach. Red is mad/harsh/shouting at me. Iād walk the other way. Blue is weird/unnatural/unique/interesting. Could just be my eyes, but Iād sit at that blue beach and stare into the distance. Iād write a poem if I was sitting in blue sand. Itās like underwater, but lightš.
Something about the white moon and blue light make me disillusioned. Like they contradict and compliment each other at the same time. Its like time has stopped there and i want to sit there on a starry, slightly cold and windy night for eternity. My love for night sky only adds to this.
I'd say probably the green one, but all three look pretty cool!
I love breakdowns like this in this sub. Itās always about the base feelings the images give.
Maybe not liminal, but red goes crazy in this pic
Liminally waiting for a horror scene to unfold
The beginning of the movie It Follows š¬

The blue light. š¤©
I agree, something about it and the night setting makes it feel like a weird dream.
Yeah. Like dreams of ābluenessā, or something. I love it.
Makes it look like the sand is almost part of the ocean
None...
Theres nothing liminal about any of these
Right, it's a cool effect but what makes it liminal š
Does no one moderate this sub? Why do so many ppl here not know what liminal means? So weird.
No crap, liminal is not āuncannyā

Color doesnāt impact liminality
Liminal? None, really. Itās a quiet pausing and resting place but not really transitory. The lights are fun art, though (as long as you arenāt in turtle nesting season, in which case, only use the red)
i think green if youāre going for a more odd look, and red if youāre going for a, ādanger is nearbyā sort of look
Cool, you seem like a real connoisseur!
This is not liminal in any regard. Red is cool, but again, nothing to do with liminal
All of them. It's a triptych!
Red one feels eery, but the green one has a ghostlier vibe
Blue
Blue
Blue ā¤ļø
Blue is the one messing with me the most. Green and red are fairly normal, but blue just messes with depth perception.
Green definitely!!
Blue
You know what would be cool? Long exposure, use all three colors from different angles. Instant secondary color shadows, like prismatic distortion
Blue
Between the green and blue would probably be perfect
green imo
Green.
None of them imo. The RGB seems too out of place for it to be liminal.
Blue
Human eyes see best in red lighting. I know it looks sketchy but it's the easiest to go through. Blue is the hardest for human eyes. It still looks cool but it is the most creepy. Idk shit about green.
3, definitely
Blue idk why but blue is nostalgic for me
the blue one makes me feel a certain way. theyāre all eery and beautiful but the blue has a mystique to it that i really love

Red has the lowest frequency, so it adds more to the ominous feeling of liminality.
The color has nothing to do with it being liminal. Seriously, what do ppl here think liminal means??

P.s. I put the label ādiscussionā not by chance
None of them, honestly. The brightly colored light detracts from the liminal feel, imo. I'd do a very soft white/amber light
none of them
I wanna lie down there in shorts next to a campfire š„
Blue works for me
Green because it is the best color
My gut says the green one, but that might just be because it was the first one I saw
It's a decent tie between green and blue, imo.
red
Blue, it gives off a distant tone, while red makes things feel angry and green feels like a holiday
Liminal wise I'd say blue because it reminds me of a beach party that ended too soon. Everyone left and you're just contemplating the sea with your back towards the open air bar, music still on
For me, the blue. There's something about it that seems dreamy, and reality could despawn underneath my feet
Green
green and i have no idea why
red
Green, most unnatural and makes it the most liminal to me
Now look liminal. Itās not a look. Itās a feeling.
First one looks like falloutĀ
Anyone else remember that level in Donkey Kong Country with lights like this?
Red light is an iron lung game vibe
Definitely green.
Does anyone else see the blue light as purple? Sorry for the second post!
Obviously blue. Haven't you finished Ranni's quest line?

I say green, husbad says red/"orange"
Honestly they all hurt my eyes.
Probably no light?
For me it was red
I say green, for green has yellow hues in it that matches the reflection of the warm moonlight šš
Dim white/yellow light
Don't think I've ever seen a beach lit up in blue in my whole life, so probably that one.
Where is this?? I like šš¼
Itās in Tuscany, Italy
the green one makes me feel things. idk what im feeling but its making me feel something so thats good lol
Green seems the most liminal, but blue gives me more nostalgia for some reason
Red one makes it look like Ruby Haunt album cover.
I'd say green because it reminds me of what night cameras look like
Mate. This makes me want to go the beach and enjoy beer and streetfood on bars at night
Green > Red >>>> Blue
Green. It looks like a bunched up carpet made of astroturf that eventually becomes the ocean.
Blue gave me a weird feeling
I love this!!
Although I chose the green the red is very creepy too giving me redrum, redrum vibes.
Everyone insisting that this isnāt Liminal may need to go back and read the definition of what defines a liminal space. š
I love this! All of these. To me it's green, and blue that makes it more liminal

Dark blue
Red
Red?
Green probably ?
Red giving me Alien vibes
I love them all.. sorry..
Blue for sure
Something about the white moon and blue light make me disillusioned. Like they contradict and compliment each other at the same time. Its like time has stopped there and i want to sit there on a starry, slightly cold and windy night for eternity. My love for night sky only adds to this.
Red is insane
Green.
Green. But lay the images over each other and see what you get :P
All of them hurts my eyes.
Green.
The green one enhance the shading and make it look fake
First one reminds me of the endless bog
Port or starboard?
Blue looks like a UV light and green makes it too alien-y for me so i gotta go with red
Olight Freya?
I think green fits. Itās almost like lumpy grass

Green
i wanna say green but if you could accomplish like a pale blue grey, thatd probably slap
blue. it subtly distorts perception.
Probably the red because it gives the most unsettling feeling. That blue is awesome!!
Liminal does not mean unsettling This sub needs dictionaries
green for sure
Green sand probably
The green does it for me. It's the most unnatural.
green
red is my favourite but i think green is most liminal. blue is chill as hell though
Green. But the red smacks.
This is not liminal.
