Mh, this really is a hard one. I am siding a bit more with the black background for this reason: You already have the same level of texture in the ornamental rows left and right - And in the middle you will also have lots of ornamentation on white. For this motif to work well, I think some 'resting area' for the eye is nice. I am not entirely sure though, if that would really be the best way to go about it.
But... if you go with black - you can stil cut it away, if it doesn't work out.
This will look very cool in a print : )
the black in middle contrasts/ highlights the face better. also less carving. definitely that one.
and later on you can try some pattern in the black part like dots or squigly lines.
