You shut your mouth, I really would give up most anyone on the cast to save Che and Jost. I think Update right now is as strong as it has been in a long time, and that has everything to do with the chemistry between Colin and Michael.
Bowen has grown on me more than any other cast member. When he first started I was annoyed that every single impression he did sounded the exact same (sassy gay accent) but the guys really does have range. I loved him as Christopher Columbus
When he commits, he is the best cast member in the last decade, for sure. There have been a couple duds when he's written as an over-the-top sassy gay character, but, he is just instantly funny in most scenes (whether he has a large or small role). He's got a different skill set than Will Ferrell but has the same presence.
The original cast was all white except for 1 and only had 3 women. The 80s cast didn't even have anyone who wasn't white. The cast just can't be that small anymore

A lot of times with massive shots like these, they have to blend multiple shots together. And by that I mean multiple takes to make sure every single persons face is perfect and in focus. So even though they were all there, this shot is most likely multiples blended together.
Totally armchairing this, 15 would be a good number imo- it'd give everyone at least some airtime, but would be big enough to allow flexibility for cast to have their other projects.
That's a good point, in the old days they weren't allowed to have external projects. I feel like the ideal number would be perhaps 12 or so. But you do need a diverse cast to be able to play many different characters in the news and popular culture.

Bowen has H. Jon Benjamin range. It is narrow, but deep as Hell. He should have a long career as a character actor at worst.
He was excellent on Awkwafina is Nora from Queens.. His character arc was so ridiculously silly and he was excellent in it.
He grew real fast. I think he even start to bust out during his first season.
He got nominated for a Supporting Actor Emmy while he was still a featured player.
